TEASER

So peaceful. Not a sound in the air. So calm, but so strange. Just hours ago, there was a massive battle between the human and demon world. The alleyway enjoyed the silence while it could, because in less than half an hour, it would be bursting with noise again.

Angel sat all alone in the darkness of his hotel bedroom, blood trickled down his face. He took off his coat, threw it on the floor and lay on top of his bed. Turning the light out, he could hear the soft echo of a police siren penetrating the night air. This was it.

The police were having one hell of a busy night. Well, on the case of a murder of a seventy nine year old man, they had been told about noise disturbances in one area of the town, several time, to which they had ignored to carry on their murder investigation. But, they were now faced with another. The lifeless bodies lay in the alleyway shadowed and thick with blood. The officers began what would just be the start of a long morning.
The car flashing and wailing pulled up just outside the alleyway and residents began to appear in their windows to see what was happening. They had all been aware of the noises they could hear before hand and wanted to find out what had happened.
PC Mattoon got out of the car and taped off the area. The smell of the bodies was ripe as he put his hand to his place. He muttered to himself. More people should have been there, but they hadn’t arrived yet. He wasn’t prepared to start alone, so he got back in the car and waited. He certainly wasn’t going to stand around inhaling lifeless bodies while waiting. He slipped quietly back into the car, unaware that he was still being watched by several of the residents .. And by someone else.
Half an hour passed and he was still there. The evil glare of the streetlamps seemed to look right through him. He reached for his radio, but felt a shiver as he heard a noise. It was hard to describe the noise as it sounded otherworldly. He shook his head. Surely, it was just his imagination, right?
Yes, it must be!! He thought, What else could it be? A demon? He laughed at the idea.
He picked up his radio.
“PC Mattoon requesting back up! Hello?”
There was silence followed by a crackle.
“Can anyone hear me? Hello?!”
Hisssssss.
He banged the radio on the steering wheel, causing it to crackle once again.
“Is anyone there? Hello?”
“Yes?” The soft soothing voice on the other end, he recognised well.
“Nina, where Is everyone? They haven’t arrived yet!” He felt so much better hearing something other than the insanely hum of the quiet street.
“They should be with you soon, they left over an hour ago. Maybe they got lost.”
“What all of them?”
“Give them time. Tonight is Friday, traffic problems? I don’t know, they’ll be there with you soon!”
The only problem was, soon will be too late.
Mattoon lay back in his chair and relaxed a little. He closed his eyes, it was very odd he had nights this peaceful. There was nothing he could do until the others turned up. By now, it was two am in the morning and even the residents had waited long enough and had gone back to sleep. Mattoon was tired he’d been working since two ‘o’ clock and should have been on his way home two hours ago, but was called out especially for the case. Slowly, he started to doze, leaving the lying bodies in the alley left behind. A loud “click” made him wake.
‘Was that the car door?’ he thought to himself. It sure sounded like it. He checked the door. No, it couldn’t have been, they were still locked. He sighed and placed his head back on the rest.
Click!
There it was again.
Now, he was alert.
The sound was louder and was definatly inside the car. Suddenly, something tapped him on the shoulder.
He screamed.
“BOO!”
Mattoon felt the colour begin to rush back into his face as he realised it was his colleague PC Barry Vines who had managed to find his way on the back seat.
Brian chuckled. “Sleeping on the job are we?”
“I’ve been waiting for you. I must have drifted off. Where’ve you been and where is everyone now?” Mattoon asked his heart still thudding.
Barry shrugged. “No idea. I was stuck at a jammed red light, and you know what Friday night traffic is like.”
Mattoon was puzzled. “Couldn’t you have used your siren?”
“I brought my own car, the station’s busy tonight. So I thought I’ll save the cars!” He laughed sarcastically again. “No, I was called in, like you were.”
Mattoon sighed. “It’s been a long day!”
Barry nodded. “Yep, and it’s not about to get any shorter. I’m starving, there’s a kebab house just down the road, want me to get you something?”
Mattoon’s stomach turned. “Sorry, the smell of burnt human flesh and kebabs somehow don’t mix with me!”
“You’ll get used to it!” Barry winked and got out of the car before asking him once more if he wanted anything. Then disappeared out of sight.
The next thing made Mattoon jump.
There was a knock at the window.
He looked up and saw a man in an overcoat wearing a hat covering his face staring back at him.
Mattoon grabbed his gun, as he slowly rolled down the window.
The man threw a scrap of paper in through the door, and walked off into the night.
Mattoon watched him disappear before lowering his gun and he picked the paper up off of his shoe and read it:

The flame of the candle, you must fear, otherwise you’ll never escape from here!

Get out! Drive away now!

Mattoon was puzzled. It was a riddle of some sort. He looked out of the window but the man was nowhere insight. He put the note to one side ready to show Barry when he came back.
Not knowing that in a few seconds time, he’d find out what the message would mean.
