Chocolate Chips by Bittersweet Decay
[Reviews - 1]

“Hey freak!” the girl laughed as she stuck her foot out in front of Dawn, sending her to the ground, tumbling with her books. Dawn took a minute, hurrying to gather up her books. Her folder her opened and out had fallen pages upon pages of paper with things written on them such as ‘Mrs. Dawn Walkens.’ “Oh! Lookie here!” the laughing girl said, picking up a stray paper as Dawn struggled to get the papers back into her folder before anyone saw, which was futile now as the kids swarming the halls of Sunnydale High had started to gather around to watch the spectacle. “Mrs. Dawn Walkens. Awww! Isn’t that so cute. Freak thinks she can hone in on my guy. Well guess what, he doesn’t like freaks!” the girl said as she ripped the paper in half, tossing the pieces to the floor. A few kids around them laughed as Dawn tried to stand back up with her books, only to be pushed back down to the floor again by the girl who was teasing her.
“Why don’t you just get a life, and stop fantasizing about mine!” she said before spitting on Dawn’s back. Dawn turned, finally getting her stance as she rammed the girl into the locker, her fist swinging fast, then connecting with the girl’s nose. The girl pushed Dawn back, her hand moving up to her nose. She looked down at the red liquid covering her fingers. “You little bitch!” she yelled, then made as if to run at Dawn. Just then, fate intervened. Two teachers came to break up the fight as the bell rang, grabbing the girls and pulled them apart.
“That’s enough! Break it up!” the teachers said. The students who had been watching the fight seemed to scatter as they went to there separate classrooms, talking about the fight excitedly. Dawn glared at the girl, but in her mind, she knew the girl was going to get off easy. Her parents spoiled her and wouldn’t even think about grounding her. Meanwhile, Dawn knew she wouldn’t get off so easy as she and the other girl were escorted to towards the principles office, the girl’s nose still bleeding badly.

“Dawn, this is unacceptable! You cant’ just loose you temper whenever you feel like it!” Buffy said, pacing in front of her younger sister, who sat in a chair. The rest of the Scoobies had all spread out throughout the Magic Box, pretending not to eavesdrop. “Buffy, she-” “I don’t’ want to hear your excuses Dawn. You can’t get into fights in school like this! This is the fifth time in the past month! The principle said she was considering recommending counseling for you!” Buffy said, cutting Dawn off. Dawn looked down. Buffy hadn’t been there. She wouldn’t understand. Dawn waited for the inevitable punishment. ”Dawn, your grounding for 5 months. One for each fight.”

Dawn sat in her room, silently staring at the ceiling as she listened to the music blaring through her headphones. Buffy didn’t understand. Dawn had had a crush on Josh Walkens for a few months and Josh’s girlfriend, Claire Fields, had found out. Ever since then Claire had teased and instigated Dawn. Dawn sighed softly, hearing the knock at the door. Probably Buffy, wanting to apoligize for yelling earlier. She took off the headphones and shut off the portable CD player. “Come in.” she said.
To her surprise, when the door opened, it was not Buffy, but Willow. “Hey Dawnie. I made cookies! Look, they’re all good with the chocolaty chipiness.” Willow said cheerfully, holding a plate piled full with chocolate chip cookies. Dawn smiled a little. “Thanks Will.” Willow smiled and walked over. She sat the cookies on Dawns nightstand, sitting on the end of the bed. Dawn reached over to grab a cookie, then looked suspiciously at Willow.
“Buffy sent you up here to talk to me, didn’t she?” she asked. Willow sighed and nodded a little. Dawn glanced at the cookies. “Peace offering?” “Yeppers! But nice, choclatey chip peace offerings.” Willow said quickly. Dawn shrugged and took a cookie, biting into it. “So, Dawn. What’s up? I mean, with the fighting and all. Is there something going on at school you wanna talk about?” Dawn finished her cookie and reached for another.
“It’s no big deal. Just….Ok, promise you wont tell anyone else?
Dawn asked, looking over at Willow. “Um, sure…..It’s not drugs or anything like that is it?” she asked, suddenly looking very worried. “No” “Oh, that’s good. Go on then.” Dawn bit into the cookie. “Well, there’s a guy at school I really liked and his girlfriend kinda found out and now she’s turned a lot of people against me. I’ve been getting teased for a while now and…I don’t know. She just keeps picking fights.” Dawn confided in Willow. Willow nodded with a slight smile. “It’ll get better Dawnie. Trust me.” she said, standing up. “I’ll leave those there. See ya later Dawn.” Willow said, exiting the room.
Dawn sighed, putting the headphones back over her ears. She turned on the music and leaned back, staring at the ceiling again. “Well,” she said boredly. “At least I’ve got cookies now.”
