Buffy and Angel were waiting for Xander and Willow to arrive. The four of them were going to a little Christmas gathering at Giles's house. It was going to be a small gathering, only so that they could exchange presents.
After Buffy and Angel finished watching the last half of "It's a Wonderful Life", there was a knock on the door. Angel helped Buffy gather up her presents and they walked out side.
"Buffster!" Xander greeted her cheerfully as he opened the back seat car door. Then, less cheerfully, "Dead Boy. You're not invited into the car."
Angel chuckled as he brushed past Xander and said, "Don't have to be." Then, he climbed into the back seat.
Xander was bewildered. "Wha..." he looked at Buffy for help.
Buffy smiled sorrowfully at Xander. "Sorry, Xand. I invited him in the car before you got here. I knew you wouldn't let him in, so..."She said apologetically. Then she smiled at him again.
Xander and Buffy began walking toward the car again.
"Aww, Buff, that's not playing fair," Xander complained.
Buffy climbed into the seat between Xander and Willow as Xander climbed in the driver's seat.
"Hey, Will," Buffy greeted her best bud. "Merry Christmas....or, Happy Hanukkah..."
Willow laughed. "Thanks, Buffy. Same to you."
The gang was laughing and having fun on the way to Giles's house. Then, suddenly, a person stepped into the street. Xander swerved the car as the companions screamed in alarm. The front hit the brick building. The airbags popped out of the driver's and passenger's sides, and Buffy flew forward. As the car stopped against the building.
Willow and Xander were covered in broken glass from the windshield. Xander was the first to climb out. Then Angel, and then Willow.
Xander's head was split open across the forehead. Willow had a small gashes on her face from where the glass had hit her. Angel didn't look hurt at all.
Buffy was laying on the sidewalk. She was covered in blood.
Angel was the first to reach Buffy. He kneeled down beside her and lifted her head into hi lap. He brushed a few strands of bloody hair away from her face.
"Hey," Angel whispered through his tears. "Buffy?"
She looked up at him. "Angel? It hurts."
"I know, Buffy, I know..." Angel said as Xander and Willow walked up behind him. They knelt down beside Angel.
Buffy noticed them sitting there beside her, and said,"Will? Xand?" They started to speak, but she shushed them. "You guys are my best friends. I love you both. Please, be careful." Willow nodded and Xander covered his eyes with his hand. Then, to Angel she said, "Angel, I love you. I always have, always will. Please take care of my mom. And Giles. Don't tell him I said that, he won't like it. Thinks he can take care of himself..." She closed her eyes and sighed.
"Just hold on a few more minutes, Buffy. The ambulance is coming," Willow whispered as she heard the faint wail of sirens.
Buffy shook her head. " I can't, Will." Then, her body went limp and her eyes went unfocused.
Angel cried and turned his head away as the ambulance pulled up. The paramedics sat down beside her and looked at Buffy sadly.
Angel sat her head down slowly and stood up.
"I'm sorry kids," the paramedics told them as they put her on the stretcher and into the ambulance.
