Spike walked into the abandoned house, which was at the end of Buffy's trail. He found her curled into a small ball in the master bedroom. She was shivering even though she was fast asleep.
Spike shrugged off his jacket and covered her with it.
Buffy snuggled into his coat and slowly stopped shivering. "Spike," she mumbled, sleepily.
Spike sat next to her and brushed a lock of hair out of her face. "I'm here, Pet," he whispered.
Buffy reached one of her hands blindly toward him. "Don't leave," she pleaded.
Spike couldn't help but smile. "I won't." He went to the other side of the bed and sat up against the headboard.
Buffy snuggled up against him and squeezed his hand. Soon she was sound asleep.
Spike closed his eyes and listened to the steady rhythm of her heartbeat.
When Buffy woke some time later, Spike was still awake. "Spike," she mumbled.
"I'm here, Pet," he said, repeating his words from a few hours ago.
Buffy opened her eyes. She sat up and leaned against him. "Thanks for the cart," she whispered. "I was freezing."
"What happened?" Spike asked pulling her close to him.
"I was out voted because I'm not fit to be leader anymore," she said. "Once again Faith has taken everything from me."
"You still have me," Spike said, softly against her hair.
"I know. That means so much to me," Buffy said.
"Buffy, I love you. I wasn't gunna let you go through this alone," Spike said.
"Why do you love me?'' Buffy asked, softly.
"I have no idea. I just do. You're beautiful, smart, devoted, and you don't let anyone drag you down. I know you lost a lot of people close to you, but they have no idea what they've lost. I lost you and I didn't see the point to keep on going. But I did cuz Dawn needed me," Spike said, stroking her arm.
Buffy sniffled. "I just... I don't understand how you can still love me after last year. I never understood why you loved me at all. Any relationship I've ever been in as been awful and I'm sick of trying to make it work.
"I'm tired of losing people. I'm tired of being hurt. That's why I kept trying to push you away," she said softly.
"And how would you have felt if I actually listened to you and left?" Spike asked, carefully.
"I know. The worst thing you can do is leave. The only reason I didn't freak on you for leaving was you came back. More importantly, you came back to me. No one has ever come back," she whimpered.
"I always will. Promise," Spike said.
"Good. That makes you number one in my book," she said, closing her eyes.
Spike smiled. "Good night, Pet,'' he said, kissing her hair.
"Good night Spike," Buffy whispered.
