Xander Harris walked down the school corridor, his head hanging low, his eyes darting at the mass of people around him for a familiar face. Finding none, he continued onward, stopping in front of a typical high school locker. Quickly and without thinking, he turned the numbers untill the lock at last popped open. No, this wasn't his locker, but he knew the combination, he knew it every year. Quickly, he placed the sealed envelope where it would be easily seen, closed and locked the door, and went back the way he came.

The school bell rang, indicating the end of yet another day. Willow Rosenburg left her class and made her way to her locker. She calmly opened it and imediately noticed the envelope sitting on top of her bag. She picked it up and looked at what was written on the front. "To my precious Willow." The startled young woman was about to open it when her friend Buffy Summers popped up behind her.
"Ready to go Will?" the blonde asked. "Hey, watcha got there?"
Quickly putting the envelope into her bag she simply muttered "Oh, nothing," and grabbed her friend's arm and directed her outside. Tonight was going to be a girl's night out, just Buffy and Willow, hanging out at the Bronze. The two had gone through some fairly hard times of late, and they really needed to unwind. However, Willow was too preoccupied with the mysterious envelope to think about tonight, and was eager to make her way home.
On Willow's front porch the two girl's parted ways, agreeing to meet each other at the Bronze at 10 o'clock. Upon entering her home, Willow ran up the stairs and into her room. Locking the door behind her, she fished into her bag and pulled out the envelope. Ripping the top open, she yanked out the contents and quietly began to read.
My Dearest Willow,
You know better than anyone else how bad I am with words. I can't even say anything serious without breaking out into a joke. Will, I wrote this for you, I just hope that you can understand.
Knowing I'm too late is what hurts most of all
That I could have shared my heart with you
Yet, desperately into love, I did fall
I cannot believe that I pushed you away
When what I know to be true
Is that I wish you would forever stay
Friends for life, is what we once would cry
And maybe now that cry is through
But even through these tears of sorrow, I must try
He's entered your life, and she into mine
And almost as if on cue
Our lives are no longer completely entwined
Year after year, you were always there
But now our moments together are fleeting and few
And living one more second without you, I cannot bear
Every morning, when I wake, It is of you I do think
For your eyes and smile my adoration grew
And I remembered those precious moments when our lips at last did link
No matter what will pass, you will be my peaceful turtle dove
For I will always share my heart with you
Because, no matter what may happen, you are my one and only, purest true love

Willow stared at the paper for a long time, rereading it a dozen times. Finally she set it down. Timidly, she picked up her phone and called Buffy. Willow quietly informed her friend that she didn't feel well and couldn't go out. When she at last hung up the phone, all she could do was huddle up on her bed and cry.

Xander had avoided his friends all day. He knew that he would have to face the music sooner or later, but still he couldn't bring himself to encounter her. The day went by slowly, and every class he had with Willow, he had purposely chosen to sit as far away from her as possible. Several times she had tried to talk to him, but each time he quickly got away. Finally he made it to his locker and opened it up. Inside, just like he expected, there was an envelope waiting. Picking it up, he read the words on it. "To Alexander". A lump caught in his throat. Silently, he opened the envelope and peered inside. There was no letter like he had thought. He pulled out a polaroid picture and looked at it. It was from his last birthday, it was a picture of him tightly hugging Willow. Buffy had taken it and given it to Xander. It was one of his favorites. He, in turn, had given the picture to Willow with the inscription "Friends Forever". Xander looked at the picture, trying to puzzle out its meaning. Without thinking, he turned it over and was surprised to find another inscription, this one in a more delicate writing. "Always Together." It was then that he heard the cough behind him. He turned to face his best friend.
"Will, I..."
She placed a finger over his lips which quickly silenced him. Stepping closer to her oldest friend in the world, she wrapped her arms tightly around him. Seconds later she felt his strong arms wrap about her. They stood there for a very long time, neither one speaking, only enjoying the moment they both had waited their whole lives for.
