Just Another Obstacle
Season Two

Buffy was still miserable about Angel reverting to his evil self, Angelus, but she still attended her daily classes and patrolled each night. One night, as she was patrolling, she heard a noise in the bush ahead of her. She leaned forward to see what it was, and something covered her mouth. She was being hauled away by our favorite vampire, Spike. She looked up just in time to see his brilliant blue eyes flash evilly, and then everything went dark.

Spike flung Buffy over his shoulder fireman-style. He marched across the graveyard, and back to the old warehouse. When he got there, he sat back down in his wheelchair, with Buffy lying across his lap. He rolled himself in and showed what he had gotten to Angel.

“How’d you get this?” Angel said laughing. Angel picked Buffy up and threw her across the room. Drusilla clapped her hands giggling. Angel walked over to Buffy and chained her to the wall.

In the meantime, Willow and Xander were talking to Giles in the musty high school library.

“Buffy should be here by now.” Giles said in a concerned voice.

“W-well, she probably got caught up with patrolling.” Willow said.

“Well, it’s getting late, we should probably be getting home now.” Giles said looking at his watch. It was 10 past eleven.

“But what about Buffy?” Xander asked.

“I’ll search for her, you two just get a good night’s rest.” Giles answered. As soon as the teens left, Giles gathered up his weapons and headed to the graveyard.

Buffy woke up leaning against a hard cement wall. She felt a sharp pain in the back of her head, and reached up. She heard a clanking of chains around her. Her eyes were heavy, like they had been punched shut, bruised. When she finally managed to open her eyes she saw Angel standing in front of her.

“And she awakens.” she heard Spike say. She moved around a little, but couldn’t see him. Angel walked towards her and pulled her to her feet. She tried to run, but she was chained.

“Now, what should we do Buffy? I mean, you wouldn’t want any of us to get bored.” Angel said, leaning against her.

“Get away from me.” Buffy whispered. He looked at her and she turned away.

He grabbed her face and said, “You know, I think Dru’s getting hungry.”

Giles wandered through the graveyard looking for any signs of Buffy or a struggle. Suddenly something grabbed his foot. He looked down and saw a vampire crawling out of its grave. Giles yanked his foot out of the vamp’s hand and opened a bottle of holy water.

Soon another hand emerged, then a head. He heard a low growling and chanced a look behind him. There was another vampire there, about to attack. Giles took the first thing handy and soaked the head and neck of the vamp with holy water. The vampire grabbed his face howling in pain, and Giles turned back to the other vamp.

It looked from the old Watcher to the other vampire and started to run. Giles quickly retrieved an axe out of his bag, and threw it at the vampire’s head. It missed and cut off his right arm.

He was tempted to pursue it, but he had to kill this one first. When he turned around the vampire had already begun a blow to his face. Giles’ glasses were knocked off his face, and his vision was a little blurry. He kicked where he thought the vamp should be and hit.

He wasn’t sure what happened next, but his bag was knocked out of his hand. He ducked under an oncoming fist or leg, and delivered a punch to the animal’s mid-section. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a stake. He stabbed the vampire, and even though he couldn’t see his mark, with all his years of training, he had hit the target. The vampire turned to dust.

Willow walked into her room through her door, and heard her mother calling to her,

“Willow answer me! Are you still on the computer, or are you asleep?” Willow took her bag off, and yelled back to her mom,

“Sorry! I was changing! I’m getting into bed now!” Willow changed into a long t-shirt and got into her bed. She was still worried about Buffy.

//What if Giles didn’t find her, what if Angel had killed her, what if Giles got killed, what if Xander got hurt on his way home, what if someone woke up dead tomorrow? Wait . . . would that work? I mean could you wake up dead?// Willow shook her head to clear her mind of the thoughts and closed her eyes.

“Everything will be ok tomorrow.” she said quietly to herself as she drifted to sleep.

*~*

“Angel, why are you doing this?” Buffy asked, crying. Angel shrugged,

“I dunno. Maybe because I can.” he answered and kicked her. She flew backwards against a wall and fell to the ground. She got back up.

“But, I must say, you are quite the persistent girl.” he chuckled.

“Would stop with the punching and just kill ‘er then?” Spike said, from somewhere across the room. Buffy tried to pinpoint his location, but while her attention was focused else where, Angel grabbed her wrist. Buffy’s eyes snapped to his.

She used to see love and comfort there, but now there was hatred. He smiled warmly, and she almost forgot he was evil. He held her hand, and she leaned her head on him. He put his other arm around her, and hugged her tightly.

Then slowly, and almost unnoticeably, he twisted the hand he was holding. Almost. Buffy tried to struggle but the arm around her held her to him. He kept twisting until he heard it crack.

“Oops, did I do that?” he asked, smiling. He stepped away, and Buffy cradled her wrist.

“You are so pitiful.” she spat. He tilted his head and looked at her quizzically.

“And why is that?” he asked. She looked at him menacingly,

“Because, I’m already being more tortured by something else then what you’re doing here. At this very moment I hurt more because of something else. Why don’t you try actually overpowering the other torture?” she snapped. He growled and ran at her, pushing her head to the side. Her neck was exposed, but she didn’t fight him. He morphed and slid his fangs into her neck.

Willow heard a faint electronic screeching, she was in the warehouse that Angel and his gang were in, and Spike was in his wheel chair, Angel was pacing in front of a wall. She heard a faint wailing, and realized that Angel was pacing in front of something or someone. She looked closer, but couldn’t make it out.

She stepped closer, and stood next to Spike’s wheelchair. Drusilla walked out of a corner and started moving her hands in front of Willow’s face. Drusilla’s mouth moved, but Willow couldn’t hear anything. Spike looked up from his wheelchair at Willow. He squinted and his mouth moved, still no sound, then pointed at her.

Angel had turned his attention her way now, and had walked over. Willow looked at the wall where he had been, and there was a young woman there. Willow saw Spike’s fist coming at her and she stepped backwards. He looked at Angel and his mouth moved. Angel shrugged and walked back towards the woman. Willow followed him and glanced back at Spike and Dru.

Dru was skulking back into her corner whimpering, and Spike was watching Angel. Angel walked over the woman and picked her up over his head. The woman was . . . Buffy.

“Willow! Willow honey wake up! You’ll be late for school.” Irma Rosenberg said. Willow opened her eyes and said,

“Ok. I’ll get changed and go.”

“There are pancake’s on the table!” Willow’s mother called. Willow changed into a cream colored paisley shirt, and jeans. She ran a brush through her hair a couple of times, and pulled on a blue hat. She walked into the kitchen and grabbed her bag.

“I don’t have time for anything... I have to help the computer teacher, Ms. Calendar, before class.” Willow said, rushing out the door. She lived pretty close to the high school and would get there quicker than if she had to wait for a drive with her dad.

Xander had gotten to school early, still worried about Buffy. Giles came out of his office, looking slightly battered.

“Any news on the Buffster?” Xander asked. Giles shook his head and cleaned his glasses.

“I’m afraid not. Do you think Willow would have any news?” Giles answered. Xander shrugged and sat down.

“Don’t you have to go to class?” Giles asked.

“Still got,” Xander started and looked at his watch. “Uh, fifteen minutes.” Giles nodded and sat down with a book.

Willow rushed into the library.

“Angel’s got her, what if he kills her. Giles you look like you’ve been hurt. I saw it in my...and with Drusilla it was like she knew...but did you get in a fight? And she was waving, with the hands, and the, what if she’s dead Giles? What if they already killed her.” Willow jabbered. Giles looked at her, confused.

“Oh my gosh. So in your dream, Angel had her? We have to save her.” Xander said jumping from his seat.

“How do you know the dream was prophetic?” Giles asked.

“I just do!” Willow snapped. She was already getting supplies and so was Xander. Giles grabbed a black bag and filled it with weapons.

“I suppose we should go then.” he said, and they left. Principal Snyder stopped them in the hall.

“Where do you think that you and these children are going? Class starts in less than 5 minutes!” He said, and they could all see a wicked smile playing at his lips. Giles looked at him and thought for a moment.

“Well, uh, ah, yes, we are quite aware of that Principal Snyder... I was just asking these children to help me load some old books of mine into my car. I’m getting old and well, I think three trips just might end my life” Giles said and laughed as best he could.

Principal Snyder eyed them suspiciously, and nodded,

“Go ahead,” he said, “But make it quick, I wouldn’t want to see any of them late for class.” He smiled and turned on his heel, and walked down the hall. They used a side door and all but ran out of the school parking lot.

They jogged to Giles’ car and loaded their stuff in the back seat with Xander. Willow ran around the front of the car, and hopped into the passenger seat. Giles fumbled in his jacket until he found his keys, got in the driver seat, and started the ignition.

They sped out, driving down Main St. until they reached the ‘Sun Cinema’. Giles took a sharp right turn into an alley and turned back onto a main road. Xander glanced at the street sign. It said Ocean Ave. Giles sped down the road, and took a left, near Kingman’s Bluff. There was said to be a temple worshipping Satan, buried in there somewhere...

As Angel’s fangs slid into her throat, Buffy didn’t bother to scream. She moaned softly, and heard Drusilla laughing in a corner. Suddenly the laughing changed to whimpering. Angel looked up and turned to her.

“I’m having a moment here, Dru. Could you whine elsewhere?” he snapped. Buffy fell to the ground, unconscious.

“Dru, what’s wrong, pet?” Spike asked Drusilla as he wheeled himself a little closer to her. She ran to him, and Angel started pacing in front of Buffy... he wanted her awake for this. Dru waved her hands in the air, next to Spike’s wheelchair.

“There’s a girl here.” she said, gazing intently at the nothingness.

“Where?” Spike asked her. She didn’t answer, and he patted her on the back.

“Kill ‘er.” she whispered. Spike squinted at the air and he saw...nothing.

He turned to Angel and hollered, “Dru seems to have seen something over ‘ere. I can’t see it, but Dru’s convinced.” Angel stopped pacing and walked over.

“I don’t see anything... put your hand out, see if you hit anything.” Angel said wearily. “It’s probably one of Dru’s visions.” Spike balled his hand in a fist and flung a punch at the air.

He looked at Angel and said, “Nothing.”

Angel shrugged and walked back to Buffy. She hadn’t awoken. He picked her up and threw her over his shoulder. Drusilla went back into her corner, whimpering, holding Miss Edith. Angel walked out of the room.

Oz walked into the library.

“Giles? Willow? Cordy? Is anyone here?” he called as he walked into the library. He walked to Giles’ desk and noticed a little slip of paper. It said ‘Out buying books, be back soon. Mr. Giles’ Oz walked out of the room and went to his van, parked outside. Who needs to go to class when you just got new records? He asked himself as he situated himself on a blue beanbag, in the back of his van. He leaned over and grabbed a record out of his box, and stuck it in the record player. He crawled to the back, to make sure the doors were locked, then crawled to the front, and made sure that the driver seat passenger seat doors were locked. He turned on his black light and reflections from the disco ball bounced around the interior of the van. He relaxed in his beanbag chair and closed his eyes as the music started.

Angel threw Buffy into his room, and tied her to the bottom bedposts. She was kneeling on the ground, her head still slumped down. The only thing that was keeping her from falling was the rope around her wrists. He walked into the next room and filled a pitcher with water and got a towel. He walked back in and knelt down in front of her. He dipped the edge of the towel into the water, and rubbed her face with it. When she didn’t waked up, he put the towel in the water again, and rubbed her forehead and neck. A lot of blood rubbed off on the towel, and Buffy moved her head. She moaned softly, and opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was Angel. He smiled at her and said,

“Hey, baby. How ya’ feelin’?” she arched her back and rolled her head.

“Better.” she answered bitterly. He smiled.

“Good.” he growled as he morphed. She screamed.

They were passing factories and buildings and suddenly Willow yelled, “There it is!” and pointed at the factory a little off to the left. Giles turned, nearly missing the factory. The brakes screeched as he skidded to a stop. Xander got out, as well as Willow and Giles, and Xander threw them each their bag. He was about to storm in, when Giles caught him,

“Not yet, we must have a plan.” Xander turned.

“Ok, so where is Buffy?” Giles asked, turning to Willow.

“She’s wherever Angel is, and she doesn’t look good.

“Ok, and Spike and Drusilla are there?” Giles asked.

“Uh, yeah. I think Drusilla is in the far left corner, and Spike, he’s just kind of in the middle of things.” Willow answered.

“Good,” Giles said and looked at the sky thoughtfully,

'‘Uh, ok. Willow, you take Drusilla, I’ll take Spike. Xander.” he stopped and looked at Xander seriously. “I need you to find Buffy and get her out. Get her in the backseat of my car and honk the horn, when you’re ready. If I’m hurt, Willow, go with out me. I won’t leave you behind though.” he said, telling them his plan.

Willow looked down and nodded. Xander pumped his fist in the air,

“Then let’s save the world!” he yelled and they all moaned,

“Again.” Willow grabbed an axe out of her bag, Xander grabbed a stake and some holy water, and Giles grabbed a morning star mace.

“Let’s go.” Giles said ominously. Willow got tingles up and down her spine. Giles reached for the door handle when Xander yelled,

“No!” Giles and Willow turned to look at him and he smiled sheepishly. “I always wanted to do this.” he explained and kicked the door. He fell backwards and held his foot. “Ow, ow, ow, ow! For movies only people, ow!” he yelped as he hit the ground. Giles rolled his eyes, and Willow helped him up.

“Now that you’ve alerted them that we have come to attempt to kick their doors down, can we save Buffy?” Giles snapped. Willow was surprised at the hostility of his voice. He opened the door, towards him and spotted Spike. The three split up, each going on their jobs.

He ran at the British vampire, swinging the mace above his head. Spike turned just in time to duck from the mace. The spiked ball came swinging at him again and Spike jumped from his wheelchair. Giles’ jaw dropped and Spike took that pause to slug him. Giles brought his leg up, and kneed him in the stomach. Spike grunted and stumbled back a little, then rejoined the fight.

*~*

Willow ran over to Drusilla, and Drusilla looked up at her.

“It’s you again. You make my babies not love me.” she said. Willow swung the axe at Drusilla who knocked it away calmly with her hand. Willow backed up a step and fumbled through her bag for something else. Drusilla looked into Willow’s eyes and chanted something mystical, soothing. Willow was being hypnotized.

Xander sneaked into the next room after searching for Buffy or Angel. He was in what looked like a bathroom. All there was dividing the bathroom and the room he was just in was a thick red velvet curtain. He heard a shrill scream coming from the other room next to his. He noticed a small door, it looked like a closet door, and ran to it. He flung the door open, and saw Angel leaning on Buffy, who was leaning on a bed. Angel was obviously ‘vamped-out’ and was sucking Buffy’s blood. Xander splashed Buffy and Angel with holy water. Angel hissed as his flesh burned.

“It’s called the sizzle effect, buddy. Now either leave Buffy alone, or get used to it.” he yelled and started to untie Buffy. He got as far as her left arm, when Angel yanked him back. Xander was tossed against a far wall and Angel was looming closer. Xander grabbed a cross out of his bag. Angel stepped back a little, and Xander stood up.

“Yeah, bad boy doesn’t seem so bad now, huh?” Angel growled mightily, and knocked the cross out of Xander’s hand. It clanked to the floor. Angel came up on him quickly, and held him by the throat.

“Two snacks, what a pick-me-up!” Angel growled in Xander’s ear.

*~*

Willow saw Oz standing in front of her.

“Oz! What are you doing here? Did you see where Drusilla went?” she asked him.

“Oh, yeah. She got scared.” He said.

“Uh, what of?” Willow asked.

“I dunno.” Oz answered.

*~*

Giles hit Spike in the jaw. He had gotten a cross out, and held it up. Spike hissed and stepped backwards, tripping over his wheelchair. Giles got a stake out and stepped towards Spike. Spike flung his wheelchair at the librarian and crawled away. A sharp edge hit Giles in the head, and he fell backwards. He felt blood running down the front of his head, right before everything turned black.

*~*

Oz stepped closer to Willow and took her by the hands.

“Let’s get out of here.” he said. Willow nodded, then remembers everyone else.

“But we have to help the others first.” Oz looked around and said,

“I don’t see anyone else.” Willow looked, there was no one. Just piles of ashes.

“They left without you, Wil. I’m the only one who cares.” he said. Willow looked into his eyes, they were dark brown.

//Oz’s eyes aren’t dark brown, they’re green! This is a trick!//

*~*

Xander struggled but nothing would loosen the vampire’s grip. Xander scratched the vamp’s hand with a knife, and Angel let go. Xander backed up against a wall and dragged his bag with him. He reached in and his hand closed around what felt like a cross. Angel grabbed Xander’s bag and threw it across the room. Xander held up the cross but this time Angel didn’t back away.

*~*

Willow reached out and punched Oz. When Oz looked away, everything changed back, Giles was lying on the ground and Spike was towering over him. Willow punched Drusilla again.

“That’s for hurting Buffy!” she yelled and punched Dru again. “That’s for killing people.” She punched Dru again. “And that is for bringing Oz into it!” She punched Dru again and Dru fell back. Willow used Angel’s chains to chain Drusilla to the wall. She raced over to help Giles.

*~*

Angel looked at Xander and chuckled.

“What?” Xander asked. He looked down at the cross. It was a chocolate bar.

“Wha? How did that happen?” he asked himself aloud. Angel grabbed it and said,

“Thanks but no thanks, I prefer blood.” He was about to kill Xander, when Buffy came to.

“Angel?” she murmured. He jumped up and went back over to her. He knelt in front of her. She used her free hand to punch him. He fell back and she untied her other hand She got in fighting stance and Angel tried to run, but Xander pushed him. Buffy slugged Angel and Xander stepped out of the way. She kicked him in the nose and then was about to crack him across the face with her heel.

He ducked and with the extra momentum, she spun in a full circle. She went into a handstand, and wrapped her legs around his neck. He swung around to shake her lose, but she held fast. Finally he shook her off and she went flying into the bed. He jumped on her.

“Stake!” she yelled to Xander. The only he could find was a cross, and he tossed it to her. It missed ever so slightly and hit Angel’s cheek. He jumped and Buffy pushed him off of her. She reached to the top of the bedpost, and broke off a piece. The canopy came tumbling down on Buffy and Angel, Xander could see their shapes moving under the material.

*~*

Willow propped Giles’ head up with her weapon bag and got ready to fight whatever came their way. When no one came she pulled her bag over her left shoulder, and Giles’ bag over her right. She dragged Giles over to a corner and propped him up again. Nothing would be able to attack from behind that way. In the background she could hear Spike yelling orders. Suddenly a group of vampires came rushing at them. Willow held up her stake, then turned around and grabbed a vial of holy water, just in case. She knew her aim wasn’t very well, but if the vamps got too close, they might finish Giles off. She threw her stake at the nearest one and it hit… but not in the right place. It hit the vampires left arm. She opened the bag and grabbed an axe. She swung at the nearest vampire and took its head off. It exploded into dust, and another two came rushing through the dust. She dumped the holy water on the nearest one and it howled as its skin sizzled. She chopped off the next one’s head and threw the axe at the next one. It exploded into dust as well as the other and the one with the holy water was retreating. She pulled out a stake and a sword and swung the sword around while she staked vampires. One knocked her stake to the floor and she cut its head off. When they had all gone, Spike himself stood before them.

“Nice job you did there.” he observed. “Could be the Slayer yourself if you had some fashion tips, less or maybe more makeup, and didn’t break a sweat through all of that.” He growled and jumped at her. She shoved her last stake into him and he fell backwards. He didn’t explode into dust though. It went into his stomach. He sat back up and said,

“Next time little girl, next time.” He ran over to Drusilla and started to unchain her. Willow muttered an incantation to hold the locks, and she helped Giles up.

He had just come to and she needed to get him out of there before the 17th century duo attacked again. She grabbed both of the bags and immediately felt guilty about leaving Xander and Buffy behind. She honked the horn loudly and got Giles set up to leave as soon as they hopped in.

*~*

Buffy yanked the canopy off of her and heard a horn blaring outside. She looked at Xander.

“It must be Willow.” he said. She nodded. She didn’t know what position Angel was in but she stabbed a stake into the canopy and she and Xander ran out.

They burst out the door and all but fell into Giles’ car.

He pulled out into the road and they sped back to school.

Cordelia was sitting at the library table when they got in.

“Where have you guys been? And Buffy, need with the outfit much?” she said and looked at all of them. “Thank god I brought extra clothes.”
