Disclaimer: None of this really happened, and don't sue me if you think it really happened on the show and find out it didn't. I made this whole thing up on a whim.
Author's Notes: This story would take place if Angel had never left Sunnydale.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy slid to a stop in front of the old mausoleum. She tried to yank open the door, but, strangely, it was locked. Panting for breath, she leapt to the roof of the building, looking over her shoulder for any sign of her pursuer. Suddenly, a demon with hideous features jumped up to the roof with her. She gasped in shock; it was the Master! Impossible, for she had slew the monstrous vampire months ago! She knew this must be a dream, but it was far too real. Suddenly, a dark, shadowy figure appeared beside her. She breathed relief, for the shadow was fighting the monster. He knocked the Master off the roof, and the monster lay there, still, and suddenly turned to dust because he had impaled himself on a rose stake, just like when Buffy had killed him. The shadow then turned to Buffy, and she saw that it was Angel, the dark, mysterious vampire that haunted her, watching out for her. As he pulled her into his arms, she sighed, relieved. They kissed passionately, but suddenly, Angel was a monster, and as she struggled to pull away, he lunged for her neck……………

"Buffy! Wake up, Buffy!", Willow called. "I'm going over to Tara's! See you at Giles'!".

She jolted out of her nightmare, shaking it and the sleep away. This was the third night in a row she had had a nightmare about Angel becoming a monster………. Angel! She was going ice skating with him tonight! The last time she had gone ice skating with him, one of the Order of Taraka sent by the Master had attacked them. Now she was taking a break from all the Slayer stuff, and the Master was no longer here to send his minions after her. They might have come if the Anointed One was leading them, but Spike, the vampire who the Initiative had fixed so he could no longer drink live human blood, had shoved the demonic little boy into a cage to burn up in the sun. Buffy sighed, stretched, and hopped out of bed. She was supposed to meet Giles at his apartment at 10:30, even though it was summer vacation. It was already 9:45, so she hurried out of the shower and into her clothes and headed over to Giles'. The whole gang was already there: Giles, of course, Willow, Xander, Anya, and now a new Slayerette: Tara. She had apparently come with Willow when Willow left to go to Giles'. Buffy entered the small kitchen and smelled bacon. She stopped short as she remembered she hadn't had any breakfast. Giles always knew, however, and served her a plate with toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, and orange juice. Between bites, she said, "Hi, everyone. What's what?". Giles explained that he had just gotten word of a new demon in town: the ice demon.

Buffy stiffened slightly at the information that the demons' favorite hangout was ice skating rinks, where they would evaporate into the air, and when someone breathed, they would possess that body. The only way to tell if someone was possessed was that the host's lips were always completely blue, no matter how warm they got. The only way to kill the demon was to douse it with water when it was in its solid form, and the demon was forced out if the host was pushed into water. Buffy exchanged a look with Willow that clearly said, "You know about Angel and I TONIGHT. What do we do?". Willow gave an almost imperceptible nod and said, "Are there any spells or anything that can prevent possession?"

Giles replied, "Strangely enough, the only spell I could retrieve from the Diaries is a ice spell, but that would only work on possessed immortals. The spell would freeze and kill humans, so I have no idea why it would be in the Diaries. The only way to protect yourself is to stay away from frozen ponds or ice skating rinks until Buffy drives it out."

Xander asked, "What is the point of possessing a human if they can't do anything?".

"Good question, Xander. I believe that this demon performs possession to obtain enough power to free them and their leader, Xenxeon, from a certain spell. The spell binds all of the demons' mortality, so when one of them dies, all of the demons in this universe will die, also.".

"Wow!" Tara cried. "What kind of powerful witch could perform that spell? I found it in my book, and I wanted to perform it so the next time Buffy slays a vampire, they would all die!".

Giles replied, "Yes, I quite agree that the witch who called upon that power must be extraordinarily experienced the art of Wicca, and extremely powerful, at that."

Willow said, "Actually, I performed it.".

Slowly, everyone turned to gape at her. She looked startled that everyone was so surprised. She said, "Well, I did!".

Xander was still staring while everyone else turned to Giles. While Giles cleared his throat, Xander walked over to Willow, saying, "You performed that spell? WOW! I could NEVER do that!!!". Willow looked slightly embarrassed at all of his attention, but quickly tried to look dignified and poised again as Giles turned to her and said, "Well?".

She said, "I borrowed Tara's spell book to find info about the spells I was trying on Spike to revive his memory of anything the Initiative did to him, and I came across a spell that was like a sort of ad. It said, "There are certain demons who prey upon the innocent, and the weak. To list a few: Ice demons, Pulgara demons, and mainly vampires. This spell is to bind the mortality, no matter how small, of all of that kind of demon in your universe. When the first demon after the spell is bound is killed, all of those demons are killed." I read how to perform the spell, thinking that if I could get the components right, I could rid the entire world of all evil demons, even vampires."

She paused for a moment, then continued. "Well, it turns out that I only had enough of the "rare" spell ingredients that the shop doesn't have for one demon binding, so I immediately decided vampire. But I pronounced the one binding word wrong, and so the binding spell was set on the ice demons."

Everyone was strangely silent until Buffy almost yelled, "Bummer!". Then everyone started talking to each other again, marveling Willow's power, congratulating her, encouraging Buffy to slay one of the demons. Buffy looked at Willow, silently thanking her for all the trouble she had gotten rid of. Now she only had to slay one demon and her carefree evening with Angel would stay carefree.

Several hours later, Buffy twirled in the air while waiting for Angel to show. She had gone through a stage as a child when she had ice skated every day, and she had become really good at it. She was performing a triple flip when she heard a growl. She landed neatly and glided around the rink, every Slayer instinct hair-trigger, feeling the vials of water in her backpack, knowing this could be her ice demon. Suddenly, a demon popped out of the ice and glided straight toward her. She slid out of reach, alerted so she could be ready when the demon evaporated. In her pack was also a demon mask, or mask specialized for keeping out unpleasant sources, that she had bought at Wicca Wonders, a magic supply shop. She rammed into Angel, who quickly grabbed her hand and partnered her in a few spins and flips to avoid the demon. She yanked out a vial of holy water, and immediately the demon disappeared. In her haste to pull out the mask, Buffy dropped her pack and stooped to pick it up. Suddenly she went ramrod straight and looked around as if seeing the world for the first time. She looked at Angel and said, "I-I believe that the demons are gone, d-dear. L-let's get out of h-here, in case they c-come back?"

Angel, looking slightly confused, started to nod until he noticed that Buffy's lips were very blue. He quickly grabbed her and pretended to pull her close for a kiss. Instead, he said, "Sorry, Buffy," and knocked her out. Just as he began to carry her away to the beach, to de-possess her, a werewolf jumped out onto the ice, skidding wildly. As soon as the monster got his footing, he charged Angel. However, by then the vampire was in his true form, and easily counterattacked the wolf. They fought for a while until Angel overpowered the werewolf who ran off, whimpering slightly.

He turned back to Buffy, only to find her waiting for him in her fighting stance, a stake raised and ready. She challenged him, saying, "Come on! Let's see what you got! If you can fight that monster, you can fight me! Come o-". She was cut off short by a vicious punch to the face, knocking her out again. Angel murmured, "Sorry, Buffy," again, and carried her out of sight.

A while later, after much resistance on Buffy's part, he finally pulled up the car at the beach. Buffy protested, "But, we can do a lot of things somewhere else! The skating rink tomorrow night, maybe?". Angel shook his head and looked away, saying, "It's so beautiful here. Come on.". Buffy didn't see his face, which was twisted in a look of revolting at this demon inside Buffy. They walked to the edge of the surf, which was as far as Buffy would go. She said, "How about-", but she was again cut off by Angel grabbing her and shoving her straight into the surf. She gurgled, screamed, and finally passed out, floating in the waves. Then she slowly stood up, ran to Angel, and said, "Oh, thank you! Thank you!". She rambled on for a while, saying how awful it was to be possessed, until the werewolf again bounded into view, but this time followed by a row of monsters.

"Uh-oh," Buffy muttered as she recognized the creatures as ice demons. She turned to Angel, who returned her look by saying, "I guess we didn't kill the one possessing you, huh?". She replied, "I guess not," before grabbing the nearest demon and throwing it into the surf. Just like Buffy had, it screamed and gurgled, but unlike Buffy, it didn't pass out; it disappeared, only leaving a small, glacier-like piece of ice. When Buffy and Angel turned, they saw identical pieces of ice lying on the dry sand in place of the demons, which proceeded to melt quickly. Buffy turned to Angel and murmured, "I guess it's over.".

However, he replied, "Not quite," and pointed over her shoulder. She turned just in time to grab the werewolf and slam it into the sand, knocking it out. She quickly recognized it as Oz, who had returned, and she and Angel returned him to his old cage.

Later that night, Angel watched Buffy leave his apartment after changing her clothes and thanking Angel profusely again. He murmured, "Now I guess it's over," and turned to nurse the wound her cross had burned into his chest. But he knew it was far from it as he knew that the sun would rise and as he knew that he would always be a vampire. There would be others; there always were.
