Buffy The Vampire Slayer > BTVS - Season Three
Hurtful Words by dreamsuntold
[Reviews - 2]

Buffy glanced up at the fading sun as it sank out of view, recalling everything she had gone through in the last 24 hours. She could hardly believe what had happened; the things Angel had done and said to her, she knew that she could never truly forgive him this time.

But she still loved him. No matter what, that one thought had seemingly implanted itself in her mind, stolidly refusing to budge. She might love again, but she knew that she would go through life comparing every guy she met to the one who had received true happiness with her.

She shifted on the cold gravestone, recalling nights patrolling with Angel through this same graveyard, her childish innocence while unable to restrain from reaching her lips towards his.

He had told her that he couldn't see her anymore, and to just go. She could understand him being scared of reverting into his old Angelus persona, but that gave him no right to hurt her the way he did. He had simply told her to move on, to get over him. While saying this, she caught the shimmer of a tear on his cheek before he abruptly turned away, but it did nothing to ease the pain, the sting of his words was still fresh on her mind and heart.

After all she had been through, this was how it would end. She might never see him again…

Angel: Buffy.

She turned, tears freely running down her cheeks now. But there was no one there. She returned to her original position only to hear her name again, this time with more anguish. Once more she turned, letting a soft cry of "Angel" escape her lips.

He was there, leaning against the gravestone back to her left. To her surprise, tears were also streaming across the chiseled face, perfect features…

Buffy: No!

He looked at her in surprise, wondering what the 'no' was for. He was sure it had something to do with him, almost positive. But he didn't ask. He had sat here, watching her think, watching her cry, since the sun had disappeared from view. He had carefully rehearsed what to say so his words wouldn't sting again- they had caused him possibly more pain than she had felt, more than he could ever have imagined. And now he was here to tell her the truth and only just realizing how much more he was going to hurt her. But he couldn't stop himself, couldn't leave it like this…

Angel: Buffy, I…

Buffy: Don't. I don't need to hear it. Whatever it is, I just…

Angel: I love you. You know I do. And you know how much it kills me to leave, but…

Buffy: Then why are you? Why do you say these things if you don't mean them? Why are you breaking up with me? I've loved you for so long; I trusted you with my entire being. When I kissed you, I felt like the luckiest girl alive. And I know you felt it too, so where did it all go? You haven't just stopped loving me, you can't have. Love like that doesn't just disappear. Was it me? Something I did?

Angel: You know it wasn't…

Buffy: Then what the hell was it? You haven't answered my other questions either, but then again you always were Mr. Cryptic.

Angel smiles, remembering the pet name, the times she used it while trying to deny her feelings for him. He had felt then much like he did now, except now he couldn't see anywhere to go that would ultimately help both of them.

Angel: I have to. You know that. We can't risk everything happening again- next time it could be a lot worse and I really don't think that you're ready to kill me again.

Buffy whimpers softly, knowing that he is right.

Angel: And our love… it hasn't gone anywhere.

He moves towards her and she doesn't look at him. As his arms wrap round her, she feels like she always does in his presence- safe, warm, in love. She tilts her head towards his, knowing that not only do they both yearn for this kiss, they need it. It might be their last one for most of eternity. There are so many things that she wanted to do with him that she will never get the chance to. His lips are still brushing hers and as her attention returns to the present, he notices her focus is again on him, now, and the kiss becomes more intense. She relishes the sweet taste of his mouth and presses against him harder, not wanting a single inch of her body to be separate from his. Realising that things are getting too intense for both of them, Angel breaks away from her with only one thing left to say, the one thing that will mean the most to both.

Angel: Still my girl?

Buffy: Always.
