Buffy stared down at the edge of her bed. It had happened again. This time her parents had come in to talk to the doctor about Dawn. “You don’t have a sister, say it Buffy, it’ll help you believe it” her mother had told her. Tears welled up in her eyes. She had said it. And the real Dawn had heard. Was she real? The question entered her mind before she could stop it. And magick? Was that real, too? Or just a figment of her imagination like the doctor had said. The tears fell freely from her eyes and soon she was sobbing loudly, trying to ignore the thoughts of vampires and demons from entering her mind. Was it all just fake? Something she made up? She let a low wail escape her. What if she were really still in the asylum? Sitting on the bed trying to ignore the silver metal that bound her wrists, while she struggled under the doctors grasp. She gasped.
//“Honey? Are you alright?” Hank Summers was asking her. Buffy starred up into the eyes of her father. “Dad?” she whispered quietly. “Oh, honey! Don’t do that to us again!” Her mother said from behind him, coming up and hugging Buffy gently. “We thought we lost you, there, Kiddo!” Hank added embracing both Buffy and Joyce in a light hug. They weren’t real. Willow, Xander, Anya, Spike, Giles. Everyone. Just her parents were real. They were there for her. “I don’t want to go back there” she said simply. “I want to live”//
Willow sighed deeply. “What if we do call, and then there’s nothing to worry about and everything gets cleared up before he even gets here?” she said looking at Tara worriedly. They had been discussing calling Angel for over a half hour. Willow against it and Tara all for it. “If Angel is half the guy you’ve told me he his, then he’ll be able to help her” she protested back. “And what if we don’t call and she doesn’t get better soon? We have to call him, Willow. It’s the only way!” Willow sighed again. Like always, her lover was right. “Okay. I’ll make the call” and she reached for the telephone.
Angel was busy trying to call Cordelia. She had run saying she was going with an old friend over three hours ago. He sighed and put down the receiver. Where could she be? Just than the phone rang in front of him, making him jump slightly. “Hello…Willow, what’s wrong? ...I’ll be there as soon as possible” he didn’t wait to say good-bye. Buffy was in trouble and there was no way he was going to let her stay that way.
Buffy was curled up in her room, sitting on the floor. She had gone into the living room, talked to Willow and greeted Xander and gone on patrol, all while her mind was telling her they weren’t real. She sniffed suddenly and—
//”Buffy, honey, you’ve got to listen to what the doctor says alright?” Joyce told her daughter. “Promise me that?” Buffy looked at her mother. She was curled up in the corner of her room, just like she had been before. In the real world, or the fake one? She asked herself. Tears welled up in her eyes. “I promise” she whispered//
“Buffy?” Tara asked. When had Tara come in? “Buffy? You’ve been sitting there for almost two hours! Don’t you want to move?” Buffy slowly moved her head upwards to look at Tara fully. “You can’t be here” she forced out. Tara looked startled. “What do you mean?” suddenly flustered she took a step back out of Buffy’s room. “I’m sorry, I thought it would be okay, I won’t do it again—” “No!” Buffy yelled at her. “You can’t be here ever because you never were here” she said more quietly. Tara looked at her with a confused expression. “Buffy, I just came up here to tell you that, well, me and Willow, Willow and I, well—” she couldn’t manage to get out the rest of the sentence. “We called Angel. He’ll be here any minute now” Buffys head shot up. ‘What?” she asked coolly. “We called—” Tara tried, “No! Don’t you see? It’ll just be harder. This is your fault!” Giant tears ran down her cheeks and slipped off onto her shirt getting it wet. “You can’t be here” she said again, sobbing hard her hands covering her face. “Buffy?” a pained voice came from the doorway behind Tara and her head shot up. “Angel?”
Angel had driven to Sunneydale as fast as possible, not even stopping to leave a message at the hotel saying where he was. If Cordelia had come home, she would probably be already freaking over him. Oh well. His thoughts returned to Buffy. Willow had said she was going insane. He had almost asked if she was talking about the same Buffy he was in love with. Angel knew he should have waited. He knew that. He should have taken control of his feelings and the demon inside of him telling him to kill the demon that did this to her and asked questions to find out what he was up against. Instead he had hung up and ran out the door. Angel pulled into the Summers driveway, got out of his car and quickly ran up the steps. I didn’t matter what he had done. As long as the woman he loved was okay.
“Buffy?” Angel repeated taking Buffy’s tear-stained hands into his own and lifting her chin up towards him. Buffy pulled away from him. She didn’t need him. It would just make it harder to let go, to be free, she knew. “Angel” she crooked. “You have to leave” He starred at her in disbelief then determination. “I’m not leaving, Buffy, not until your better.” She chuckled slightly, than sniffled. “Who said you even had a choice in the mat—” It was happening again. Why don’t I want it to happen? Buffy asked herself suddenly confused. Let me talk to Angel just for a few more minutes…
//“Honey, the doctors say you’ve got to get some rest now, okay?” Hank said leering over his daughter worriedly. “Tyler came and visited you, he just left. Honey?” he said again trying to get comfortable in his crouched position in front of her. “Honey, why did you tell him to leave?” Buffy sat up suddenly. That was why she didn’t want to come here. “Tyler?” she said hesitantly. “Don’t you remember?” Hank asked confused. “Angel” she whispered to herself. She needed Angel. He wasn’t here. He would never be here. “A figment of my imagination” she said aloud. “Dad, I’m sorry. I don’t care if he’s not real, I need him” and she was gone.//
“Buffy!” Angel said urgently. She had zoned out on him. Gone to wherever it was that was telling her to get him to leave. His Buffy would never do that. Picking her limp body up and carrying her over to the bed, he lay her down softly. “Tyler” she said feebly. Angel straitened up immediately. “Who the hell is Tyler?” He asked Tara, Willow, and Xander who were all watching near the doorway. “I don’t know” Willow answered him. “She’s not dating anyone, she hasn’t for a while” she added. “What if she’s in another world?” Tara said looking around expectantly at the others. “Her body’s still here, that’s got to be something” Xander said. Angel caressed Buffy’s face gently. “C’mon, Buffy, I need you here” he starred into her eyes. They were dead. Nothing on the other side. And then there was.
Buffy woke with a start. She was back home. Looking around she saw Xander, Tara and Willow at the door regarding her sadly. And Angel. She looked into the eyes of her angel and rapidly everything became right. Sitting up to the startled looks of her friends she placed her hand on the back of Angel’s neck and pulled him in for a kiss. Xander gave out a yelp of surprise and Willow and Tara just giggled. Angel responded immediately to her but pulled back sooner than she wanted him to. A smile, spread across her face and she wrapped her arms around him completely holding him close to her.
“Awwwwwwww” Willow said to Tara later that night. “And when she just woke up and started kissing him, it was so romantic. I told you if anyone would help her it would be him.” Tara nodded encouragingly. “Very romantic. It was so obvious” Willow looked at her curiously. “It was obvious that it was romantic?” Tara shook her head. “No, that there in love.” She smiled at Willows expression. “That they need each other”
