Buffy walked slowly along the beach, ignoring the cold wind and rain blowing onto her face. The nearest cave was almost half-way down the beach, but she continued on towards it. The storm raged around her and the rain soaked her hair and clothes completely. The ocean was slowly coming up closer and closer to where she was walking; it wouldn’t be long until it was creeping up onto her sandals. Buffy knew she should leave, while she still could. She had kept a smile on her face when she was with her friends, but now that they had all gone to their separate homes and left her to herself, she didn’t even bother. The man she loved had left her tonight, and he wasn’t going to come back.
When I was young
I never needed anyone,
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
Living alone
I think of all the friends I’ve known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody’s home
When she had finally arrived home she half-expected to find her mother there, asking her where she had been, why she hadn’t wanted her to come to Graduation. But no, her mother was still out of town, would be for another few days. She had gone upstairs, changed into a sundress, even through she knew it was impractical and that she would be cold. She had survived the battle and five years of high school, but she had had her friends. Holding her, encouraging her, knowing what she was going through. But now she was on her own. Rain pelted down her face and washed away her tears. Willow, Xander, Oz, Cordelia. They had all dated plenty, but none had fallen in love. Only Giles; and she couldn’t even talk to him, not after what happened to Jenny.
All by myself
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
Hard to be sure
Sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure
Remains the cure
The wet sand stuck to her feet, as Buffy continued walking down the beach, the storm getting more violent by the second. He had left to give her something more, a new life, a fresh start. Men could so incredibly stupid, sometimes. She didn’t want some college guy that she would have to lie to when she had to go patrolling. Someone that would run if they saw a vampire. It wouldn’t work, never had. She wanted her Angel, the one person that could make her feel alive, feel wanted, needed. She needed someone that could fight for themselves, so she wasn’t always worried about them, she didn’t need the extra worry. Buffy took another step and felt the ocean tickle her toes. It had crept up on her, unnoticed. The cave wasn’t too far ahead; it would be safe in there because of all the ledges.
All by myself
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone
The cave was dark, there was no sunlight filtering in it anymore. Starfish and barnacles littered the lower sides of it, and seaweed filtered the ground. Buffy slowly walked in. The cave itself was huge. You walked straight down this small, narrow passage until you reach the huge clearing. It was literally huge. Large ledges stood on all sides of the purplish-grey rock, some lower down, which weren’t safe to be in, and others higher up, where even in a storm and at high tide you couldn’t be reached. Buffy bent her head and sat down on one of the lower ledges, waiting for ocean to fill up the entire cave. She pushed her back against the rock and found that it was smoother than the others, almost too smooth. The ocean was thundering in, covering her legs and waist. She shivered as another large wave hit higher, against her chest and salty water splashed onto her face.
All by myself
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
All by myself
Don’t want to be
All by myself anymore
Buffy put her hand behind her head and leaned back harder onto the rock wall behind her. Almost immediately something cold touched it and Buffy pulled her hand back and turned around. A dark figure stood behind her, supporting her back. Buffy recognized the figure rapidly and suddenly turned all the way around, pressing her self up against a side wall. “Angel?” she asked weakly. The water was almost up to her neck, forcing her to bob her head up and down, hitting the low, rocky ceiling. Angel slowly moved his hand towards her wrist and took a grab at it. Buffy tried to move away, but the water was too high and she needed both hands to swim out. Angel starred at her for a second, watching the water turn her lips blue and her hands go numb. That was why he was here. To be numb of all feelings, including love. Realization dawned on him, and he quickly forced himself into action.
Every time our eyes meet
This feeling inside me
Is almost more than I can take
Baby, when you touch me
I can feel how much you love me
And it just blows me away
Angel was in front of her. Her Angel hadn’t left. Buffy couldn’t quite think right, her mind still revolving around the fact that he was there, and hadn’t left her all alone. She didn’t move, just followed Angel, as he pushed her off the ledge and into deeper waters. Buffy allowed herself to sink to the bottom of the cave, her body not even trying to float. A strong arm grabbed around her waist and she was hoisted up above the water. Angel guided her limp body towards another ledge. This ledge had a higher and lower level, like the rest, but the higher one had yet another passageway, which would take them farther from the water.
I’ve never been this close to anyone or anything
I can hear you thoughts
I can see your dreams
I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in you
It just keeps getting better
Buffy watched as Angel swam with one hand, against the strong current, holding her tight to his side. The taste of salt stung her tongue and Buffy suddenly wanted Angel to let go of her, let her sink to the bottom. Instead, Angel swam to one side of the cave, stood for a second, letting her catch her breath, before picking her up and pushing her onto the ledge. Angel grabbed the ledge and lifted himself up onto it after her. Once standing, he picked Buffy up, and, keeping his head bent, walked through the tight passage at the back. Almost as soon as they entered into the small room, Angel stopped and looked down at the bundle he was carrying. Buffy was still lying limp in his arms, her eyes closed. Angel sat down gently, leaning against the rocks, and placed Buffys’ body down in his lap. Her hair had become a think mat on her head, the bottom of her dress had been ripped off by the rocks making it some-what shorter and she was scratched on her forehead and on her arms, in several places. Angel bent down and gave her a small kiss on the lips, figuring she wouldn’t respond.
I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you.
The smell of your skin
Taste of your kiss
The way you whisper in the dark
Buffy felt Angels’ kiss but still didn’t move. He had saved her from death, but he hadn’t saved her from him. He was still going to leave her, force her to survive on her own. It wouldn’t be long before she came back to the cave again, like she had before, and he wouldn’t be there to save her. Buffy slowly opened her eyes, looking into his eyes, refusing to let any emotion to show. “What the hell were you thinking?” Angel asked suddenly angry. “You could have died, you would have!” Buffy didn’t say anything for a moment, just looked at him. “I know” she said simply. Angel sighed, letting go of any anger. “Why?” he asked weakly looking up at the rock in front of him. “Why not? I was going to be alone and living, why not be alone and dead? I’ve heard it’s a lot easier” she said looking at his cheek and then at his flattened hair. Angel flinched at her words. He finally found his voice and managed to croak out: “It’s not”
Your hair all around me
Baby, you surround me
You touch every place in my heart
Oh, it feels like the first time every time
I want to spend the whole night in your eyes
I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in you
It just keeps getting better
Buffy starred at Angels’ soaking wet chest. His dark blue shirt had ripped in several places and Buffy placed a hand on one of them, feeling around the jagged edges. Angel looked down at her when he felt her finger touch his skin. “Maybe it’s not, but it’s all I can do” she said lightly. Angel felt his heart drop. Taking in an unnecessary breath, he gently put a hand behind her head and back, and pushed her forward, so she was sitting in an upright position. “You can do plenty, Buffy, don’t ever doubt that” Buffy looked down at her dress for a moment. “You’re still going to leave” she stated not looking at him. Angel held one of her hands in his, caressing it lightly. “Yeah, I am.” He said quietly. “That’s why you did this, isn’t it?” Buffy refused to meet his eyes. “Does it matter?” she asked weakly. Angel ran his hand through her hair, combing it out with his fingers. “Matters a lot. You’re young, Buffy, you’ve got a whole life ahead of—” she looked up quickly and placed a finger on his lips. “I don’t want to hear it” she said her voice wavering slightly. “I don’t have my whole life ahead of me, Angel, because eventually I’m going to fight, and I’m going to die. Again” she said exasperated. “That’s why I want you there, why I need you there, to make it all better”
I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you.
Every little thing that you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
“Buffy?” Angel said and tipped her head upwards so she was looking straight at him. “You can’t give up, ever. I’m going to leave, because I have to, and you’re going to keep fighting and doing what you do best” he whispered quietly to her before pressing a light kiss to her lips. “Because the woman I’m in love with never gives up” he added starring at her. Buffy looked at him blankly for a second then broke into tears, pressing herself to his chest. Angel held her to him, savoring every minute he had left with her. “It’ll be okay” he whispered into her ear as she continued to sob into him. Eventually her cries softened, but it was obvious she was still on the verge of breaking out again. “Okay” she said softly. “Okay”
I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Every little thing that you do
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you
