Willow stands at the window of her bedroom. A tear forms as she touches the glass a stray bullet had once broken, closing her eyes she steps away and whispers “Happy Birthday, Baby.”
There is a knock at the door and Willow, Buffy and Dawn all rush to answer it. Standing on the other side is a guy in his early twenties. He looked distressed. “ Hi, erm… This may seem a bit weird but I understand Tara McClay used to live here?” Buffy and Dawn looked at Willow who replied “Yes, she does…did.” Buffy puts a comforting arm around her as she asks “What can we do for you?” The stranger looked around nervously. “My name is David McClay, I’m Tara’s brother and I was just wondering if I could come in and.” Dawn interrupts “You’re not a vampire, are you?” Buffy nudges her. “Continue, David and yes, come on in.” He wipes his feet on the mat and enters. “Thank you, I would just like to see who she spent her last hours with, you know?” He wipes his eyes as a tear starts to form. Willow puts her hand over her eyes and runs upstairs. David looks up after her. “Willow Rosenberg, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right, how did you know?” Buffy asked. David looks at the floor, “Tara talked about her a lot.”
Buffy, Dawn and David are sitting in the living room. Buffy looks at him seeing a resemblance to Tara. “Anything I can get you? Coffee? Tea?”
“No, no thanks but maybe a water?” Buffy nods and leaves the room. “So David…” Dawn piped up “How come Tara never talked about you? We knew a lot about your other brother.” “Donny?” “Yeah- Not a nice guy in my book!” “Not a nice guy in anybody’s book.” David laughed. He looked from the floor where he had been previously concentrating. “He got it from my Dad, it definitely wasn’t from my Mothers side.” Dawn now realised why Willow could not be around this young man, he looked and sounded so much like Tara it was painful. Buffy came back from the kitchen and handed David a glass of water. Willow entered the room after her. “Sorry about the whole running away thing, I just got a bit of a shock, you know?” David looked at her and smiled. “I understand.” The phone in the kitchen rings and Dawn winces. Buffy looks at her and goes to answer it. A moment later Buffy comes back. “How come you didn’t mention you had a Parent/ Teacher thing tonight, Dawn?” Dawn looks at her guiltily. “It slipped my mind.” Buffy sighs. “ Go get in the car, you can have supper when we get back.” Dawn heads out of the room as Buffy looks at Willow “You’ll be alright?” Willow nods and they both look at David who is staring into his glass of water jingling the ice cubes. Buffy looks back to Willow. “I’ll not be long.”
Willow was the first to speak. “So have you been to Sunnydale before?” David looked away from the glass into which he had been staring for several minutes. “No, I haven’t. I was going to come last year or Tara’s twentieth birthday but hearing my father was coming I decided against it.” “Yeah, that’s right. Donny and Beth came too. They gave Tara a bit of a hard time but left when they got their comeuppance. David laughed and Willow smiled. “I heard about that!”
“If you want we could do a little sightseeing, maybe go for pizza? Then I’ll drop you off at … Where are you staying?” “I was going to go home, travel overnight.” Willow looked at him, shocked. “You cant do that, you look so tired.” Willow thought for a minute. “We have a spare room here, I’m sure Buffy wont mind.” David smiles and hugs her. “Thank you, its appreciated” Willow takes a deep breath, trying to clear the images of Tara from her mind. “So…” Willow asks “Do you have any luggage with you?” “No” David replies “I guess I didn’t think I’d be staying anywhere” “Hmm…” willow said, standing. “I guess we’ll have to work a little bit of shopping into sightseeing!” David looks up at her awkwardly. “I don’t have any…” Willow takes his arm. “Don’t worry, Ill get it.” With that, Willow wrote a note for Buffy and the two headed out the door.
