“Could you lend me a hand?” Buffy said through clenched teeth. “I thought I was,” Angel replied. “Well, then lend two hands,” Buffy replied. They were in a graveyard, fighting about 10 vamps. Buffy finished off the last vamp by throwing it against a tree where a stray branch stuck him through the heart. “Oh sh – “ the vamp was cut off as he turned to dust. Buffy then turned to Angel. “You could have helped more,” she said. “I was doing the best I could,” Angel replied. His game had been off lately, ever since Christmas. “Well, it felt as though you weren’t. You know, this is just going to end up with us fighting about who has it the hardest, so let’s just quit while we’re ahead,” Buffy said with a sigh. “I agree. Let’s each go home, sleep on it, and we’ll talk about this tomorrow,” Angel said. “Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel,” Buffy joked. They hugged, and then went their separate ways.
As Buffy lay in bed that night, she thought; just once, I wish Angel knew what it was like to be me. Across town, in the mansion on Crawford, Angel’s last thought before he drifted to sleep was; just once, I wish Buffy knew what it was like to be me .
Buffy woke groggily. She felt as though she had just gone to bed. She sleepily opened her eyes, and immediately frowned. She didn’t remember going to Angel’s. She started to stretch, and realized that something was wrong. She felt disoriented, as if she wasn’t herself. She looked down, and realized that she really wasn’t herself. She saw long, black pants, and a naked man’s chest. She then let out a loud moan.
Angel woke to an alarm clock. I don’t own an alarm clock, Angel thought to himself. He opened his eyes, and then immediately closed them. This is a dream, I didn't go to Buffy's last night, he thought. He stood up, and saw Buffy’s face reflected back at him in the mirror. Angel moaned and immediately picked up the phone.
Buffy heard the phone ring, and reached over to pick it up. “Hello?” Buffy said in Angel’s deep voice. “Buffy,” she heard her own voice say. “Angel, is that you?” Buffy asked. “Yes, and if this isn’t a dream, then we’ve got a problem,” Angel said in Buffy’s voice. “You can say that again,” Buffy said. “How am I supposed to go to your school?” Angel asked. “Angel, calm down, I’ll walk you through it. First, you’ll need to get dressed. I’ll make it easy for you; get a pair of my jeans, and my blue and white striped halter-top. Grab my white flip-flops from the kitchen. Then, you’ll need to grab my hairbrush from the bathroom. My make-up bag is in my backpack, so don’t worry about that. You’ll need to leave early, and come here so I can do your hair and makeup. All your classes are with Xander, Willow, or both of them. Talk to them in the library before class. They’ll understand,” Buffy finished. “Okay, I’ll be there soon,” Angel said quietly. He hung up the phone, and sighed. This was certainly going to be one hell of an experience.
Angel stood up, and went to the closet to look for what Buffy had told him he needed to wear. The jeans were easy enough, but the top was a little harder. There was only one blue and white striped halter top, so Angel figured that was the top Buffy meant. Angel decided to get dressed as quickly as possible. He had seen Buffy nude before, but being inside her was something completely different. He found everything else that Buffy told him to bring. As he headed downstairs, he heard Buffy’s say, “Honey, I’m leaving for work. I’ll see you later.” “Bye, Mom,” Angel answered. He got downstairs, and realized that he could, and should, eat something. He made himself some toast with jam, grabbed his homemade lunch, and headed out the door, headed for Buffy.
Buffy was waiting for him when he arrived at the mansion. “Hey, does my hair always stick up like that?” Angel asked. “Yes, and I can’t seem to get it to lay down flat. But, on to something more important. Give me that backpack so I can make you presentable. Angel watched as Buffy sat down in front of him, and then proceeded to attack him. Suddenly, Angel began to laugh. “What is so funny?” Buffy asked. “Oh, just to see some of your patented looks on my face,” Angel said. “Looks who’s talking,” Buffy said with a grin. “All right, you’re done.” Angel stood, grateful. “Now, make sure you find Willow, Xander, and Giles. Go to the library and give them a head’s up. By the way, is there blood in your fridge?” “Yeah, there is. My clothes are in the other room,” Angel said with a smile. “Okay, let’s meet at the Bronze after sunset,” Buffy said. Angel nodded, and stepped outside, and flinched. Then he realized that he was human. He reveled in the sunlight as he walked to Sunnydale High School.
Once Angel left, Buffy sat down on the bed. This is really weird, she thought. Suddenly, she felt really tired. She lay down on the bed and fell into a deep sleep.
Angel had a very different experience. He arrived at school, and ran into Xander and Willow. “Hey Buff, how was patrol with Deadboy last night?” Xander asked. Angel cringed inwardly. He hated that name. Before he could respond, Willow came in with, “Xander! That’s so rude! You know Buffy hates when you call Angel that.” “Thanks Will,” Angel said. “Hey, we need to go to the library and find Giles. Something big is going on.” With that, the three of them headed for the library. When they got to the library, they found Giles cross-referencing. “Hey G-man! What’s happening?” Xander asked. “Nothing of great import. Buffy, how was patrol last night?” Giles asked. “Got attacked by about 10 vamps, went home, slept, and that’s about the it,” Angel replied, hoping that the response he gave sounded like something Buffy would say. Giles and Xander appeared to accept the answer, but Willow, on the other hand, was staring at him with great interest. “Wait, why didn’t I notice?” Willow said. “What?” Xander asked dumbly. “You’re not Buffy,” Willow said. “What do you mean?” Xander asked. “She’s right. I’m not Buffy, I’m Angel,” Angel said. “Willow, how did you know?” Giles asked. “Well, she was here on time, and she told us we had to see Giles. Buffy rarely does either of those things,” Willow said with a grin. Xander began to walk around Angel slowly. “So, if you’re in Buffy’s body, then…” “Buffy’s in mine,” Angel said. “We need to fix this,” Xander said. “Duh,” Angel replied, “I mean, I don’t know how much longer I can spend being like this.” Suddenly, the bell rang. “Oh, first period. Come on Angel, you have this class with me,” Willow said, dragging Angel along behind her. Angel groaned at the thought of school.
When the final bell rang, Angel almost leapt for joy. Angel had to deal with lectures, labs, questions, and pop quizzes. Angel knew he had done fabulous on the history pop quiz. Eating lunch outside had been a welcome treat. He hadn’t really seen the sun in a long time (movies didn’t count). PE was a unique experience. Firstly was the changing with a whole bunch of girls. Willow had to keep hitting him because he kept staring. Then there was PE itself. It was the day that they did self-defense. Willow explained that they did self-defense once a week. One of the guys in Angel’s groups got fresh, and pinched his butt. Angel grabbed him, and flipped him onto the ground. Then, before anyone could notice, he pulled Xander over and made it look like Xander had flipped the kid. “Good job Xander. But, let Buffy have a try,” the PE teacher said. Xander and Angel exchanged a smile. This was turning out to be quite a bonding experience for the two of them. After school, Angel, Xander, and Willow headed to the library. There, they began to try to find a way to switch Angel and Buffy back.
Buffy had a very different experience. She slept for a while, then got up, and called Sunnydale High. She wanted to make sure that Angel was doing okay. She decided to take a look around the mansion, being careful, of course, to avoid direct sunlight. She eventually got hungry, and had to make her way to the fridge for some blood. It felt kind of strange, but Buffy just got over it, and drank till she was full. Them she decided it was time to have some fun. She made her way to the spacious bathroom, where there was a lovely, large bathtub. Buffy ran the bath water, and proceeded to disrobe. She sank into the bathtub, laid her head back, and closed her eyes. She thought long and hard. I am in Angel’s body. This is never going to happen again. I should really take advantage of this. And she did (just use your imagination). She finished her bath, and decided to get ready for the Bronze, since it was almost sunset. She looked in Angel’s closet, and reveled in the sight of all Angel’s clothes. She decided on a nice pair of black pants, a dark blue shirt, and one of Angel’s many black leather jackets.
Buffy got to the Bronze and immediately saw Angel, Willow, and Xander. She was happy to see that the three of them were laughing and smiling. Girls who wanted to dance with her kept approaching Buffy, and she had to keep saying that she was with Buffy. Angel saw Buffy, walked over to her, and they immediately embraced. “I will never again say that you have it easier than me,” Angel and Buffy said simultaneously. They laughed. “So,” Willow said, “How was your day?” “It was uneventful,” Buffy said. However, she gave Willow a look that told her they would talk later. “So, did you find anything?” Buffy asked. “Well, we did find two things. You guys can wait until the next new moon – “ Willow started. “No!” Buffy and Angel said. “I didn’t think so. There’s another way; a simple incantation.” “Let’s do it,” Angel said. He really didn’t know how much longer he could stand being a girl. “Wait. There wasn’t an awful lot of description on the after affects of the spell. We don’t even know if it’ll work,” Willow said. “Well, if it doesn’t work, then we’ll just wait for the next new moon, and wish us back to ourselves,” Buffy said. “I agree. We really have nothing to lose,” Angel said quietly. Suddenly, Xander looked at Angel and said, “Man, stop brooding. Those looks of hers look really weird on Buffy’s face.” The tension was broken, and everyone laughed. “Well, if we want to do the spell, we should head to the library. Giles is setting up for the spell. I figured that you would want to do the spell instead of waiting,” Willow said.
They left the Bronze and trooped to the library. Xander and Angel walked in front, chatting and laughing, while Willow and Buffy walked behind, talking quietly, and giggling occasionally. They got to the library, and found everything all set up for the spell. Angel and Buffy stepped into the middle of the circle of candles set up in the middle of the library. Willow stood outside the circle. “See, the incantation is pretty simple. The Hellmouth is doing all the work. So, here it goes:
Let all those who stand before,
Be put as they were once more.”
“That’s it?” Buffy said. She then realized that she speaking in her own voice. She looked down, and found that she was herself. She looked over to Angel, and found him passed out on the floor. Buffy ran over to him, sat down, and placed his head in her lap. She placed her head on his chest for comfort. Buffy’s eyes suddenly got wide. “He’s got a heartbeat!” “Good Lord,” Giles exclaimed. He ran over to Angel to make sure that Buffy wasn’t hallucinating. “She’s right. He’s human. Let’s move him to the couch.”
Angel moaned. He felt a lot better somehow. He looked down and realized that he was back in his own body. Then, he realized that something was really different. He felt his heart beating. Quickly, before he passed out, he took in a deep breath. “Oh, you’re awake,” Buffy said, and ran over to give him a big hug. “The spell?” Angel asked. “It worked really well. The spell put things as they were. Buffy was always human. You used to be human, so the spell made you what you once were; human,” Willow said with a smile. Angel gradually stood up. “How do you feel?” Buffy asked. “I’m not sure. The same, I guess. Just with the added bonus of a heartbeat.” Just to prove it, he took one of Giles’ swords, and gently bent it. “Whoa,” Xander exclaimed softly. “How long have I been out?” Angel asked. “About 4 ½ hours. As a special treat for you, Willow was able to hack into some very high up web sites, and was able to make sure that you exist,” Buffy said. “Yep, sometime within the next week, you will be receiving your birth certificate, social security card, driver’s license, transcripts, diploma, and anything else you might need to get on with your life. By the way, you are now Angel Giles,” Willow said with a grin. “I have talked to the school board, and you are now the new assistant librarian at Sunnydale High School,” Giles said with a smile. Angel smiled. This was what he had always hoped for. He was going to take advantage of this. “So, what are we going to do?” Angel asked. “Live,” Angel said. As they walked out into the sunrise, hand in hand, Angel looked at Buffy and said, “It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day.”
