Spike walked through the vineyard, confused and deep in thought. He was brought out of his thoughts by a hard punch to his jaw. He took a fighting stance and saw Angel standing in front of him. “What are you doing here?” Spike asked, relaxing.
“I could ask you the same thing,” Angel said.
“I’m working. I don’t have time to fight with you,” Spike said, seeing Caleb exit the vineyard. “Shhh,” he said, following Caleb.
Angel wanted to know what Spike was up to so kept quiet and followed Spike.
Caleb led the two vampires to a tomb of some sort. Spike was about to follow him but Angel stopped him. “What are you doing?”
“Going in,” Spike said, listening to what was going on inside.
“I wouldn’t,” Angel said.
“Well, if you took half a second to stop trying to find a way to kill me, you’d realize that Buffy is in there. Now if you don’t mind, I’m going to help her,” he said, quietly walking inside.
Angel dumbfounded, followed him.
Meanwhile, Buffy was inside. “You have no one and now you’re gunna die,” Caleb said, raising the scythe to strike the bruised slayer.
“She’s got me,” An English voice said from behind Caleb.
Caleb turned and Spike landed a hard punch to his mouth sending him flying.
Buffy smiled at Spike and pushed herself to her feet. “Thanks,” she said, not noticing Angel yet.
“You okay?” Spike asked, worriedly.
“Nothing you didn’t fix,” she said, fondly.
The two blondes fought Caleb with precision, and Angel was impressed and jealous at the same time.
Buffy sliced Caleb in half and smiled at Spike, with a gleam in her eyes.
“You know Angel, a little help would have been nice,” she said, startling Angel.
“You looked like you had under control,” Angel said.
“We did,” she said, emphasizing ‘we’.
Spike went over and inspected the gash above her yes.
“I’m fine,” she said, smiling at him.
“Just making sure,” Spike said.
Buffy shook her head. “Come on. Lets head back,” she said, leading them out of the tomb.
They talked on the way home and Buffy’s hand ended up entwined in Spike, where she gave it a comforting squeeze.
Spike looked over at her and smiled that boyish smile that he always had when he looked at
her.
Angel noticed but didn’t say anything, until they got home where, he pulled Buffy to the front porch to talk.
“You wanna tell me what’s going on?” He asked.
“What do you want to know?” Buffy asked, leaning against a pillar.
“Why Spike and you are all cuddly,” Angel said, crossing his arms.
“We’ve been like this for some time now. It just got more intense last night,” Buffy said.
“He’s a soulless vampire!” Angel flared.
“He’s got a soul,” Buffy said, going inside.
She immediately went looking for Spike, finding him arguing with Faith on the back porch
“Why do you even bother? She doesn’t love you,” Faith said, exasperated.
“You’re missing the point,” Spike said, wanting a cigarette.
“And what’s the point? No, wait. You love Buffy. She doesn’t love you, and she’s not giving it to you so why not go somewhere else?” She asked.
Spike leaned in close to her. “Because. 1) you’re not my type. 2) I love Buffy and I’m not gunna hurt her and 3) It’s wrong,” he said, smirking.
That’s when Buffy came out, startling both Spike and Faith.
“Hey B,” Faith said, nervously.
“I need to talk to Spike. Angel’s inside,” she said, softly.
Faith smiled at Spike and went inside as Spike rolled his eyes.
Buffy looked at him. “You guys are getting along a lot better then expected.”
“God, she’s driving me nuts,” Spike growled.
“My previous boyfriends didn’t seem to think so,” Buffy said, hurt.
“Look at where that got ‘em,” Spike said.
Buffy smiled and sat down on the steps and Spike sat next to her. “What else is bother you?”
Buffy sniffled. “A lot of things.”
Spike turned toward her. “Tell me.”
Buffy got up with tears in her eyes. “Things are just so frustrating. I don’t know how much I can take,” she whimpered.
“Are you talking about Angel?” Spike asked.
“No, I’m talking about me,” she said, turning to look at him. “I seem to get more and more responsibilities everyday. I cant even get a decent nights sleep. I’m tired, my body hurts from emotional and physical wounds, all I want to do I hide from the world.”
Spike frowned as tears rolled down her cheeks. “Buffy,” he sighed, going toward her.
“Spike, I don’t think I can do this anymore,” she said, not bothering to hide her tears.
Spike pulled her into his arms. “Shhh. You can. No alone, but you can,” he whispered.
“God, I need you. I don’t need Angel or Giles. I just need you,” she said, wrapping arms around his waist.
“I’m here and I’m not going anywhere. Promise,” he said, kissing her hair.
“Good,” she said, pulling back a little. “Can I stay with you tonight?” She asked,
blushing.
Spike smiled. “If you want to,” he said, stroking her wet cheek.
Buffy smiled and the two of them went inside. They went straight to the basement, thankful for the lock on the door.
