*****A Watchers diary*****

Giles sat in the library observing the Scooby gang. Buffy, Willow, Xander, Cordelia and Oz had recently started courses at Sunnydale Community College, and after a rough start they seemed to be fitting in nicely.

After ridding Sunnydale of Spike, Dru and Ether, things had been pretty quiet. Apart from a recent demon infestation that needed dealing with at UC Sunnydale. Prom night had gone well, and as it was dark the gang had been able to invite their favourite demons as dates. Buffy partied with Angel, Xander with Esme, Willow with Oz and Giles with Eve. Since her popularity had decreased, Cordelia for once in her life had trouble finding a date, in the end Eli had offered to accompany her. With no interruptions from supernatural, otherworldly super powers…the night had been perfect. Well, apart from Buffy and Angel parting ways.

Now that their life in Sunnydale High had come to an end, Giles hoped that the Scooby gang could still meet at the library during the night to discuss ‘slayer stuff’, or he may have to resort to applying for a job at the college. He certainly couldn’t have Buffy sprinting halfway across Sunnydale every time she needed him.

He looked around at the group. Buffy was perched on the edge of a table, next to Willow’s computer. It wasn’t actually Willow’s computer, but being one of the only five students who had ever come to the library, she had exclusive rights to it. The two girls were talking excitedly about college stuff, and Cordelia sat beside them in a chair, looking up occasionally from filing her nails and telling them about the cute guys she’d met. She seemed to be recovering well. Oz and Xander sat at the other end of the girls’ table and occasionally mocked them. ‘Oh, there are so many cute guys there Buff!’ Xander squealed, and Cordelia shot him a poisonous look. Smiling contentedly to himself, Giles returned to his dairy.

“I have yet to file a proper report in my watchers diary for the recent events, but I know it must be done soon. I must include the successful termination of the Mayors ascension, but as yet I have no idea how to tell the council how we stopped him. I have no real proof that he is dead, but I would assume that an inexperienced squirrel such as he would not last long in the wild. Another aspect of the success that I fear telling the council about is Faith. Perhaps I could tell them that she died? Although there is no doubt in my mind that Wesley has already contacted them about this. I received a letter this morning that requested me to take on the role of Buffy’s Watcher again. The Council seem oblivious to the fact that I never actually retired my position. Idiots.”

Giles paused for a moment and then underlined the word ‘idiots’ twice.

“The deaths of Spike and Drusilla have been a huge weight off my mind, and off of Buffy’s. She seems content now that she has less to worry herself about. Altho her recent split with Angel has caused a few complications, she’s coping remarkably well. I sometimes wonder how different her life would be if she hadn’t ever dated a vampire…how different all our lives would be, if we kept solely in the company of the living.

Eventually Buffy should have a new member for our group. As a witch, and one of great experience, Eve informs me that returning her to human form will be easy. Unfortunately she escaped from her cage last night before Eve arrived at Willow’s. We are certain that she has not left Willow’s bedroom, but until we find her again, she will stay as a rat.

I also feel that perhaps Cordelia has been spending too much time with Willow, she has become much more…studious. She has offered to help with any research that has to be done and has whittled many stakes. Perhaps she is lonely, losing the crown of ‘Queen C’ and having nothing to replace it with in college.”

He looked up and surveyed the group once more, then glanced at the clock. It was already dark and soon Esme, Eve and Eli would join them. Then Buffy would take an hour to patrol…she didn’t need much time these days, and she was busily studying for college. As were the others, and Giles was preparing himself for the lessened communication which would go between slayer and watcher. He had to consider himself lucky that Buffy’s mom knew about her slaying, and didn’t seem to mind. It would be odd if he had to phone her every night to pass on information if Joyce didn’t know. What would he say anyway?

‘Hello, Mrs Summers? I’m Rupert Giles, librarian of the school your daughter graduated from months ago…she has an um, a…an over due library book.’

Or perhaps the blunt approach would be better. ‘Joyce, Giles, Buffy there? Got some slaying stuff just cropped up, we really need her to dust demons and save the world tonight. Out partying? What kind of mother are you! The world needs saving!’ Then he would hang up; leaving a bewildered Joyce to wonder if she’d perhaps had a crank call.

His mind began to wander as he wondered again how their lives could’ve been different. Then the awaited demons burst through the library doors and greeted their friends. Eve was the last to enter, and the only one that Giles really noticed. They had become closer over the summer…close as friends. After she’d saved him from Ether that night he had loved her, but she didn’t know it. He wondered exactly how to tell her. And what would she say…did she like him too?

Eve walked over to the quiet corner, which Giles inhabited, and stood by his side.

‘What are you writing?’ She asked.

‘Oh, just my diary.’

‘Anything good in it? Anything about me?’ She asked smiling.

‘No, that would give you a big head.’ He looked up at her and smiled, then turned back to the diary; she bent down and kissed the top of his head gently. He was glad she couldn’t see his face as he blushed. He must have meant something to her surely; she only ever showed such affection to her closest friends or relatives. Eli, Eve and Willow were among the list of close relations…Willow because they had begun to practice witchcraft together; Eve was Willows new tutor. Eve loved them all in different ways…she even loved Buffy, who had at one time been ready to kill her. Giles wondered again if she loved him less than them, equally or more…he hoped more. He was vaguely aware that his train of thought wreaked of juvenile hormones, and silly insecurities…but it was impossible to think straight with this beautiful stranger interrupting his every thought. And the fact that he could smell the softness of her hair and a faint perfume as she stood so close did very little to help. He felt light-headed and full of excitement and fear when she was around, his stomach tying itself in knots.

‘Do you feel like seeing a film tonight?’ She asked, gently running her fingers through his hair. ‘I’ve heard there’s a good French film on this week.’

‘French film? I don’t know, I…’ He was flustered, was this a date…or a friend thing? Why was this always so hard?

‘Not that kind of French film Rupert.’ She laughed. ‘Apparently it’s very artistic.’

‘They always are.’ He said as he pulled on his typical tweed jacket and closed his diary. He took her arm and led her out of the library and towards the movie theatre.

Well, the Watchers Diary will have to wait; I’ve got more important things to attend to he thought to himself.
