--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seconds/minutes/years; they became indistinct at times like these, when you spent all your time wondering how you're going to tell your mom that the nice young man you're in love with is actually 200 and something, but it's okay, because his days of killing are over. At least you think they're over, but that doesn't explain the dark ally-way, or the fangs against your neck. So close you could feel his breath, if only he could breath.

"Angel... Angel please don't do this..." Buffy whispered, "Please..."

If he had killed her sooner... or if she hadn't hesitated.... But that moment was gone, when it had really counted she had copped out. She couldn't kill her Angel. Not her Angel, who untill now had never been anything but protective.

She couldn't kill her Angel.

She felt his fangs push at the skin over her jugular. Soon the skin would split, and he would have the blood of the slayer to fuel him through the centuries. So why was everything happening so slowly? The way he held her was almost gentle, so much like a lovers caress that she shivered. His hands were so cold... the Angel she remembered had always been warm, like a normal human.... But now he reminded her of a corpse.

His fangs sunk into her neck so very, very slowly. The thing that had been Angel was enjoying this. Buffy gasped in what could have been esctasy in another place and time. Then trembled as the life drained out of her.

"Please Angel, stop." Buffy mouthed, blood softly filling her throat, Angel had pierced deeply....

Her thoughts went to Willow and Xander, what would they think when she didn't come to school the next morning? Giles would probably sense that she was dead. He would have to break the news. Poor timid Giles, who didn't deserve to have too lie to the police, to her family, when they asked about her. And her Mother....

Buffy searched through her mind, remebering what had happened, if there had been a way to stop this. Something she had missed. There must have been something. Angel had seemed odd, but he had avoided her when the demon first started to take control. He hadn't wanted to hurt her. If he had said something before hand it might not have been to late. But by the time he came to her it wasn't of his own free will. By then he had just been too tired to fight anymore, even for his true love.

This had been the real curse of the gypsies; not to give him control over the demon, but just the opposite. Oh, he had a soul alright, what was left of it was in there somewhere, watching Buffy die. And powerless to help. It must be horrible, to watch your limbs destroy your love, without any chance to stop it.

Poor Angel, poor sweet Angel. Watching Buffy die.

"Angel... I know you're in there somewhere... please... if you can help at all... give me the stake."

Buffy leaned heavily on the vampire, he was her last resource, her only strength. "Angel... it's Buffy, you love me... and I love you."

Red mist drifted in and out of her eyes, playing a sickening game she knew she would lose. There was no response from Angel, and for a terrifying moment, she thought that she was too late, there was no Angel left to appeal too. Then she felt a solid wooden stake slide into her hand, familiar, and somehow comforting too know that she would die with it in her hands. She thanked whatever gods that might be watching over her, and tried to summon her strength. Some part of Angel had given her the stake back, and now it was her turn.

"Forgive me."

Buffy plunged the stake through Angel's heart and waited for him to turn into dust, leaving her alone with death. But he didn't. Instead a shudder ran through him, and he fell to the earth, bringing Buffy with him.

"Buffy... love needs no... forgiveness."

With that he brushed his lips against hers and it was finished.

The End.(So did you like? Hate? not angst? too angst?)
