Chapter 7 - The Ones We Trust

So close, so unbelievably close! She had almost escaped, avoiding another heart aching blow, but of course not, the gods never had given her a break. As she stared up at the familiar eyes she noticed in the back of her head that his hands were grasping her upper arms, like he had tried to catch her in a fall. Maybe he had.
Buffy couldn’t help but lean towards him and notice that he was just as paralysed as she was.

Stop this, a voice inside her pounded. She didn’t have to, though, as a cold female voice did it for her.

”You disgust me.”

Buffy backed away and Spike straightened and took a step back. The blonde slayer only stared at the strange figure that was standing beside Spike and had probably done that all along. It was a woman, taller than herself, blue-streaked hair, high cheekbones and icy blue eyes.

Not Spike’s piercing blue color though, but a emotionless, white-ish blue that, to be honest kind of freaked her a bit. Definitely not human. Vampire? Could be, but Buffy had a sixth sense when it came to vampires and this one didn’t have that vibe.

”Hey, you know what disgusts me? Your hair, girlie. Here to sue your hairdresser?” Liz’s New York accent cut through the silence.

Neither her or Spike said anything. He just stared at her.

”Hi, Spike” Since when had her voice gotten so quiet?

He ran a hand through his peroxide hair, his black eyebrows narrowing.

”I thought you had left.”

”Disappointed?”

”No” Spike smirked, some of the old him returning, ”Just presumed you had taken the earliest flight away from here, luv.”

Buffy couldn’t hear it in his voice, but she knew him well enough to notice the hurt hidden in that one sentence. Her head was spinning. A part of her wanted to go back a year and a half in time, to the time when she could just hold him and it would be okay. Her feelings were confusing, even for her. She loved them both - Angel and Spike - but she had thought that she had lost Spike forever and to suddenly see him like this stirred up things. Not to mention she still had to process this baby-thing and put her fiancé against the wall. Life was in no way a picnic.

”Um…yeah, something came up.” She did not want to stir things up even further with the whole baby-situation. God, she needed some serious Oprah.

Liz felt in the way just by standing there, but the lady with the hair didn’t even seem to care, just stared unembarrassed at the two blondes. Oh God, David was going to love this. Not. Two handsome vampires making mooneyes at his fiancée! Liz couldn’t help but to feel a bit guilty, David meant a lot to her and she had no idea what the hell Buffy was doing. If it had been her just losing a baby like that, she wouldn’t be hitting on other guys instead of calling her boyfriend.

This was not the Buffy she knew.

“Buffy, we really need to go.”

Spike saw for the first time the redhead that stood next to Buffy, her arms crossed over her chest. At first, he thought it was Willow, but then the red hair was almost the exact shade as the witch’s. Besides that, there was no similarities. Instead of Willow’s kind light-green eyes and slightly dorky expression - something that had stayed with her since school and Spike considered kinda charming- this one had light-blues and her expression was far away from dorky, more like threatening. Spike shook his head to himself.

“You’re gonna leave again?” Spike couldn’t help but let a small streak of desperation from his voice.

Buffy bit her lip and glanced up at him, her eyes flooding with emotion. He almost had her, he sensed it.

“Please, Buffy.”

That did the trick.

Buffy nodded silently and turned to Liz, “Liz, I know…this has been hell for you, but I need a few minutes-”

“Fine, I get it. But this time I’m not waiting outside like a friggin’ puppy”, Liz walked away towards the elevators and the doors opened. As they closed on her, she called out, “Find me at Starbucks.” And then she was gone.

“Not a huge fan of hellos and good-byes that bint.” Spike muttered.

Buffy laughed, “No, she’s really not. She’s more - it doesn’t matter. You want to talk?”

He scratched the back of his head, “That was the idea, luv. Well, before you ran off.”

“Oh. I-I’m really sorry about that…just seeing you again here and having to say what I came here to -” She was rambling and she knew it.

“No need for explanations, you’re here now. I’ve got a flat just a few minutes away.”

Buffy shook her head, “I don’t have the time Spike, Liz is waiting and my flight leaves in 3 hours. Can’t we talk here?”

Spike shrugged. Of course it was okay, all she said was okay. Just that being here put them in the risk zone of being discovered by the Poof and no chance in hell he was gonna let that happen.

“I think I know a place.”

They left, both forgetting about Illyria standing still in the same spot as she had stopped when she and Spike had crashed into Buffy and Liz. She tilted her head while looking at them, rushing back through the corridor, Spike first and Buffy following closely behind. The hate of being ignored during the whole reunion session stomped through her body before she decided that she, Illyria, was in no way going to feel inferior to lower beings.

“Revolting” She snorted.

Liz sat in one of the couches, slurping on a mocha frappucino and staring out the window. She felt so bad for David that it almost tore her heart in two. Was it very wrong? Being in love with your friend’s fiancé? She couldn’t help it. Since the first time she’d seen him - on a Slayer meeting where Mr. Giles had gathered the most of them and informed them of their destiny over scones - David had been there sitting on the couch. His ebony hair had been kind of long for a guys and slightly wavy and his brown eyes and perfectly sculptured eyebrows just added to the Adonis image. She remembered Mr. Giles saying something about choosing a location.
I want to be wherever that guy is! She’d thought. When she heard that he was stationed in Rome, Italy she had talked to Mr. Giles and gotten transferred there.

All this happened before she realised he was dating Buffy, The Slayer. Buffy was famous among the slayers, especially since Andrew - a guy that had been helping her since day one according to himself - spread the tales of the Scoobies.

The Scoobies were the initial four; Xander, Willow, Mr. Giles and of course - Buffy. Buffy had gone through so much, had that mysterious aura surrounding her and Liz knew that she could never compete with that. So she became Buffy’s friend and thereby got an all access pass to David.

She never knew David had been the least interested in her, but a few weeks ago when Buffy was out again, he and Liz had stayed home. And he had kissed her. Not to mention slept with her. It had been quick, yet that was when she realised she had a shot. It had only happened twice after that, and while doing it, he kept repeating how much she meant to him but that he had obligations to Buffy.

You’re the one I love, Liz. Maybe I marrying her, but I love you. No matter what, we’ll always have this.

Yeah, she felt guilty, but it felt so right she didn’t care. Now she made up for it by helping Buffy see what a treasure she had. David was perfect.

She dialled the well-known number that she now knew by heart.

“Hello?” His sweet Italian accent came sweeping through the phone and into her heart.

“It’s me.”

“Buffy?”

Ow, that hurt.

“Elizabeth.”

“Oh,” his voice sounded strangled, “Hi. What’s up? You on your way home?” He was quiet for a few moments. “I miss you.”

She light right up. “I miss you too, baby.”

“Everything alright?”

Was she going to tell him? Here she had her chance of breaking them up, letting Buffy wandering away with that guy with the weird hair and never coming back. Lizzie shook her head, Buffy was her friend, and in a strange way she thought that this thing with David was…better with Buffy in it. Buffy had to do all that hard, complicated relationship stuff and Liz got the good stuff.

We are all selfish, all human beings. Techincally, I’m not worse than any other.

“If you want to keep Miss Perfect, David, you need to do something. Now.” She made her choice.

There was a click on the other end and he was gone. He had done his.
