Chapter 3 - Serendipity
“I-I’m sorry, barging in on you like this, Angel” Buffy scratched her arm subconsciously, sort of a nervous action she’d come to do more and more the closer to the wedding she got, “It’s just… I really need to talk to you.” Suddenly she realised the truth in Lizzie’s statement, that about not seeing him. This was hard.
Angel got his grim, ‘the-world-is-gonna-end’ face.
“No! No, it’s nothing like that,” Buffy smiled, “No apocalypse.”
Angel’s left eyebrow rose slightly higher than the other one, “But why…then why are you here?”
“So, if none of us are in mortal danger it’s a no see policy?”
Buffy couldn’t help but smile ironically.
“Usually, yes” Angel grinned sheepishly.
“Could we…um, go somewhere…to talk?” Buffy asked, the glares of Angel’s people burning her back.
Angel wasn’t sure what to expect. She was with the Immortal now, he knew, and she didn’t seem upset enough to know about Spike. So what was it? Was she here to scold him for sending one of his men to spy on her? After all, she’d given poor Dylan a run for his money. No, that wasn’t it either.
“Wherever…just not a sewer” she whispered, probably not meant for his ears, but hey - vampire. Angel twitched. This couldn’t be good.
“Yes, there’s my off-” Spike is probably there. Not a good idea. “Let’s go to the conference room.” He put a hand on her back to lead her into the big room when a familiar yet forgotten spark reached his hand and he quickly withdrew. Nina. Who?
They slowly sat down next to the large oak table, the big room felt empty with only the two of them sitting there.
“So,” Angel started, “What’s up?”
Spike paced back and forth trying to ignore the nagging feeling of missing out on something important. Angel not returning made it even worse.
“Sod this” Spike groaned and walked through the door and into the lobby, almost bumping into Gunn as he did.
“Hey, watch it!” The other man scoffed, “I have a meeting in half an hour, stain the suit and you’re dead.”
“Little late for that. The dead part, I mean” Spike replied. “Hey, you’ve seen Peaches?”
“Yeah, he ran into the conference room with some blonde…Guessing Nina ain’t gonna be that happy, but it’s probably just some work related thing.” Gunn ranted, oblivious to Spike’s blank expression.
Crash!
“I’m here…to…” A loud noise coming from the lobby interrupted Buffy’s speech. “Lizzie.”
She just knew. Lizzie was her rock, but unfortunately, a slightly unsteady one with one hell of a temper.
Especially when it came to demons. ‘Way to go Buff, bringing Liz down to Demon Plaza.’
“Excuse me”, Buffy quickly rose from the chair she’d been so uncomfortable seated in.
“Lizzie!” She shouted as she entered the lobby, “How many times do I have to tell you -”
It was then she noticed. Lizzie and the demon she’d been fighting with had been torn apart, kicking and screaming by a couple of Wolfram and Heart lawyers…and someone else.
Someone with a striking resemblance to…
“Spike?”
Buffy was paralysed, her hand covered her mouth in a expression of disbelief. Her throat felt stuffed with words that wouldn’t come out. To someone else, seeing an old lover that was supposedly dead was a biggie. However, this was the second time it happened to Buffy Summers. The confusion was just as big as it had been that last time.
Yet, this time the situation was a whole lot different. For months she had tried to forget his face, just like she had tried to forget Angel’s. Tried to forget that last night she’d spent lying next to his cold body and how she had finally admitted her true feelings just to get them shoved back in her face.
I love you. No, you don’t. But thanks for saying it.
She didn’t know what to say, she was afraid that if she opened her mouth something in the style with; ‘Where did you get that shirt?’ or ‘You an evil lawyer now?’ Nothing made sense.
Lizzie wasn’t sure whether Buffy’s reaction was because of what she’d done - beating up a demon in Buffy’s ex’s office - or something else. Judging by Buffy’s expression she was guessing something else.
“Buffy, are you okay?” She tried to get through to her friend, but strong arms still hold her in a firm grip, “Let go off me, or you‘ll be painfully aware of what a slayer is!” She roared and was released within seconds. “Now, that’s more like it…”
Liz stopped her ranting when the increasing awkwardness filled the room and made it harder to breathe. Behind Buffy stood a guy she presumed to be the ex, he was handsome, quite tall and with spikey brown hair and suit. ‘But if that is the ex why is Buffy staring at that other guy?’
The guy Buffy was staring at was one of them that had pried her off that demon and Lizzie could never recall Buffy ever mentioning a guy that fitted with the description ‘short peroxide blonde hair, leather coat and the highest cheekbones ever’. A person like that you remember. Okay, she’d only known Buffy for a few months, yet they never had any secrets before and Lizzie had always thought Buffy was very open with her past. Obviously she missed out on some serious guy facts.
Spike stared in awe. She hadn’t changed a bit, maybe a bit more tanned but that was it. She seemed to come from another life that he knew but couldn’t quite remember fully. So much had happened since last time they last saw each other. Like say, his death. That was probably why she looked at him like that.
“Hi Buffy” He said, not really sure what else there was to say.
Another voice brought Spike back to what was going on around him, the red-haired woman he’d just separated from the demon tried to get through to the paralysed blonde in front of him.
“Buffy” she spoke “Earth to Summers! Okay, this is the last time we ever do something like this! You are seriously freaking me out.”
Buffy shook her head and rubbed her eyes, as she’d just woken up from a deep sleep. Maybe she had.
“I-I’m sorry, Liz…Could you wait here a couple minutes? And...um, try not to kill anything.” Buffy turned around looking Angel straight in the eye.
“You’ve got some serious explaining ahead of you…” Then back to Spike again, “And so do you.”
