Spike wandered around the graveyard, bored out of his mind. After awhile he went home. The second he walked inside, he know he wasn’t alone. He sniffed the air and relaxed. “Slayer, I don’t wanna fight,” he said.
When she didn’t answer or come out, he went looking for her.
He found her huddled in a small ball in the back of his crypt. “Buffy?”
He crouch down in front of her and noticed her eyes full of pain. Slowly he inched toward her. “You ok?”
Buffy looked at him and her eyes filled with tears. “No, I’m not,” she whispered.
Spike stood and offered a hand. “Come on, lets get you off the floor,” he said.
Buffy slid her hand into his and he pulled her to her feet. Her knees buckled and she slumped against him.
Spike scooped her up and sat her on the sarcophagus. He stood in front of her and frowned. “What happened? Is it Dawn?”
“It’s my mom,” Buffy choked out.
“What about her?” Spike asked. “Is she worse?”
“She’s….” Buffy couldn’t even tell him and started sobbing.
Spike realized what she was saying and shock ripped through him. “No,” he said, pulling Buffy into his arms. “She cant.”
“I found her on the couch yesterday,” Buffy whimpered.
“Where’s Dawn?” Spike asked.
“With Tara and Willow,” Buffy said, pulling away a little. “She hates me.”
Spike shuddered, trying to swallow his tears. “She doesn’t hate you,” he said, his voice catching.
Buffy pulled him into her arms and wrapped her legs around his waist. She rubbed his back as he cried.
Spike’s arms went around her waist and he sobbed. “You should be with Dawn,” he whimpered.
“WE should be with Dawn,” Buffy said, gently pushing him away. She wiped his tears. “Come on, lets go get her.”
Spike grabbed is duster and they headed out into the night.
Buffy and Spike came up to Willow’s apartment and knocked.
Tara opened to door. “Buffy, Spike. Come in,” she said, stepping aside.
Buffy and Spike walked in and noticed Dawn on her sleeping bag. “Dawnie,” Buffy said, softly.
Dawn’s head came up. “Hey.” She looked over at Spike who was looking at her with a worried expression. “Spike,” she said, softly. She got to her feet and looked at Buffy. “Did you tell him?{“
Buffy nodded. “Yeah That’s why were hear. I wanted to be here for you,” she said.
Dawn took a shaky breath and looked at them. “Do you guys care if I go home?”
Tara smiled. “No sweetie. You guys call if you need anything” she said.
Dawn nodded. “Lets go home,” she said to Buffy.
Buffy wrapped her arm around Dawn and left with Spike.
At the house, Buffy and Dawn begged Spike to stay. Dawn ended up in Spike’s lap where she cried herself to sleep.
Buffy was snuggled up against his side with tears running down her face.
Spike ran a hand up and down Dawn’s back. He pressed a kissed to Buffy’s hair and wrapped his free arm around her.
“You should get some sleep,” he said, softly.
Buffy nodded and snuggled into him. “Just hold me,” she whispered.
Spike rested his head on Buffy’s and fell asleep with his girls.
When Buffy woke, Spike and Dawn were still sleeping. Carefully she slid from Spike’s arms and went up for a shower.
Spike stirred a few minutes later and noticed Buffy’s absence. His keen ears picked up the noise of the shower and smiled as he stroked Dawn’s hair.
A few minutes later, she stirred but snuggled deeper into Spike.
“Morning, Lil Bit,” he said, kissing her hair.
Tears slid down her cheeks. “I miss her so much,” she whimpered.
“So do I,” Spike said, pulling her closer to him. “It’ll get easier, I promise.”
“Can you keep that promise?” Dawn asked, pulling away from him.
“If Buffy doesn’t push me away anytime soon, I’ll be here to help you through it.”
“Buffy’s scared and confused. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. So you cant hold that against her,” Dawn said, sniffling.
“Never crossed my mind,” Spike said.
Then Buffy came downstairs. “Hey, guys,” she said, softly.
She sat back on the couch and Spike wrapped and arm around her. “You okay?”
“I’m a little better. The funeral is tonight if you wanna go,” she said, shyly.
“I’ll be there, promise,” he said.
“I think Dawn and I are gunna need you,” she said, relaxing a little.
Spike looked down at Dawn who nodded. “The gangs been real supportive but cant change it. No matter how hard they try,” she said.
Spike kissed her hair. “Just think of her all the time. She wouldn’t want you guys to give up,” Spike said.
“So what are we supposed to do?” Buffy asked. “I don’t think I can do this.”
Spike looked at Buffy. “Yes you can,” he said.
Dawn reluctantly climbed out of Spike’s lap. “I’m gunna go take a shower. It’ll make me feel better,” she said, trudging upstairs.
Buffy watched as Dawn went upstairs and let out a shaky breath. “God she’s taking this a lot better then expected.”
“How are you holding up?” Spike asked, softly.
Buffy shook her head. “I’m not,” she whispered.
Spike stood up and ran a hand over his face wearily. He had tears in his eyes but had to be strong for his girls.
Buffy stood up and ran a hand over his back. “Spike, are you okay?”
Spike resolve broke and his tears flooded down his face. Buffy turned him around and hugged him.
Spike buried his face in her hair and felt her start crying. He hugged her tightly as they both cried.
Buffy’s knees gave out and they slumped to the floor.
Buffy’s tears died down but Spike still cried. She pulled his head to her chest and cradled him. “Shhh. It’ll be okay,” she soothed.
Spike closed his eyes and willed his tears to stop. “It’s not fair,” he said.
Buffy threaded her finger in his hair and squeezed him tighter. “I know.”
At the funeral, Dawn clung to Spike, as the coffin was lowered into the ground.
Buffy watched as her mother was lowered and looked at Spike. He was practically holding Dawn up.
Someone came up behind her and grasped her hand.
Her eyes traveled toward the person. “Angel,” she whispered.
Spike eyes snapped up and he growled.
Dawn buried her face in Spike’s chest as she cried.
Angel looked over at Spike. “What are you doing here?”
“Shut up,” Spike said, scooping Dawn up. “I’m gunna get her home and to bed. You staying here?” He asked.
“Only for a few minutes. I’ll be there in a little bit. I wanna be there with Dawn,” she said, softly.
Spike nodded and headed toward the house.
Angel watched as Spike left. “What was he doing here?”
“Taking care of me and Dawn,” Buffy said.
“Spike?” Angel asked.
Buffy turned and looked at him. “He loves us. He’s good with Dawn and he’s really good to me,” she said.
Angel’s eyes softened. “I didn’t come to fight with you. Wanted to make sure you were okay,” he said, running a hand over her hair.
“I will be. It means a lot that you came. You were probably really busy,” she said.
“If you need me to stay I will,” he said.
“Thanks, but you should get back. And I need to get home to Dawn.” She wrapped her arms around him and inhaled his scent. “It really does mean a lot Angel.”
Angel kissed her forehead. “I wouldn’t have missed it. Call if you need anything.”
Buffy nodded. “I will,” she said, backing away.
Angel smiled a little at her and disappeared into the shadows.
She turned and stared walking toward her house. She walked in the door and was greeted with Dawn’s sobs. She climbed the stairs and found Dawn crying in Spike’s arms.
Spike looked up at Buffy with grief covering his features.
Buffy went over to them and ran her hand over Dawn’s hair. “Sweetie?”
Dawn opened her eyes. “Buffy?” She whimpered.
Buffy frowned and looked at Spike. “We should all get some sleep,” she said.
“Can Spike stay?” Dawn asked.
Buffy looked at her. “Yeah,” she said.
Dawn let out a shaky sigh. “Good,” she whispered.
Spike gently laid Dawn in bed and pulled the covers up to her chin. “Try and get some sleep, Nibblet,” he said, kissing her forehead.
Dawn sniffled but nodded. “Okay,” she mumbled, closing her eyes.
Buffy kissed her sister’s forehead. “Goodnight, Dawnie,” she said.
Dawn mumbled a goodnight.
Buffy and Spike watched her for a few minutes before leaving. Spike left the door open a little and Buffy led him to her room. She looked at him with
concern. “You okay?”
“Honestly? I don’t know. It doesn’t feel
right,” he said.
Buffy opened her closed and hung up her jacket. “The house feels lonely and empty,” she said, sitting on the bed.
Spike sat next to her. “Did Peaches leave?”
Buffy nodded and leaned into his side. “He just came to see if I was okay and I told him I was,” she said.
“Are you really?” Spike said, wrapping an arm around her.
“I’m just tired. I’m gunna go change, then we can go to bed,” she said, going into the bathroom.
Spike watched her go and stood. He went to the window and gazed at the stars. He sighed and changed out of his tux and into his normal jeans and t-shirt.
Buffy came back in and smiled. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I will be. You should go to bed,” he said.
Buffy went up to him and stroked his cheek bones. “Spike, you can stay here with me you know. I really cant be alone,” she whispered.
Spike kissed her forehead tenderly. “I’ll stay,” he said, leading her to the bed.
He laid behind her and curled around her body. “Goodnight, Pet,” he said.
“Night, Spike,” she whispered.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door.
Dawn poked her head in and Spike smiled at her. “Couldn’t sleep?” Dawn nodded. “Come here.”
Dawn climbed into between him and a sleeping slayer. She snuggled up against him and closed her eyes.
Buffy stirred and turned over. She smiled at Dawn curled up against Spike. She threw her arm over her sister and went back to sleep.
