Chapter 2 - No Bravery
A few seconds later, they had made it to the elevator - (after passing the security guard ) - Buffy stomping nervously with her left foot driving Lizzie mad.
“If you don’t stop doing that I will have to stake ya” Lizzie sighed, she couldn’t quite understand how she’d gotten from saving the world to…this. Buffy usually knew better than to mess with her temper, Lizzie was after all the typical redhead.
“You know, this might not be such a good idea.” Buffy bit her lip while tucking a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.
“You gotta be kidding me.”
“Nuh huh” Buffy reach for the buttons, “How do you get the stupid thing to go down again?!” Panic rose in her voice as the elevator continued its way up.
Annoyed by Buffy’s lack of success, Lizzie also reached for the buttons.
“It won’t go down, probably somebody has pushed the button upstairs”, Buffy sighed after giving up, leaning against the wall.
“Fine. Know what? We go up, directly down and then take the first flight home” Lizzie couldn’t help smiling. Finally Buff had come to her senses.
“Sounds like a plan.” ‘What am I doing here?’ Buffy thought, and shook her head. She’d let the 16-year-old in her take over. Most people would probably call it cold feet. Lizzie was right, this was insane. Crazy. Giles would kill her if he knew she was here. They’d discussed Wolfram and Hart, and Angel’s part in it. Giles had made it clear that she shouldn’t let her feelings get in the way of the truth. The firm was evil. And so was everyone in it.
Harmony was really sick of this. Before talking in the phone used to be her specialty, but since it became her job, it had lost its charm. Of course, back then she had talked to her friends and cute guys, not demons in need of a lawyer.
“Hey boss” she called out as the other vampire passed her desk, “How was Italy? Did you get your favourite secretary something? You know, I’d really like a Fendi bag.”
Angel ignored her, “Any messages?”
Harmony shrugged, “Just some demon guy that needed help to sue his uncle, which by the way sounds like a no go…and oh, the CEO of the Italy office called to say thanks…and she said some weird stuff about gypsies.”
“Oh.” Angel turned his back on he and staggered away to his office.
“Could at least have said thank you, but noooo” Harm muttered and went back to her paperwork until she saw a familiar shadow over her desk.
“Blondie Bear!” she squeaked, “How was Italy?! Did you…”
“No Prendi bag, pet” Spike said without really hiding the arrogant smirk, before he left to go after Angel. His day wouldn’t be complete without pissing his grand-sire off.
“It’s FENDI, you moron!” Harm shouted to deaf ears.
Just as Spike disappeared behind the heavy doors of Angel’s office, the elevator next to her opened to reveal two young women struggling with the buttons.
“Oh Liz, try press the red one!”
“B, the red one is the friggin’ emergency button!”
“Any problems, ladies?”
Lizzie and Buffy stopped, looking up at a Chaos demon. It wasn’t pretty. No way either of them wanted to stand in an elevator, trapped with that piece of slime bag even if it would only be for a couple of minutes. Buffy couldn’t help a squeaky ‘ew’ from leaving her lips.
“Eh, Buff, let’s get out and take the next elevator down.”
“Again, good plan.”
Buffy and Lizzie pressed themselves against the wall on their way out to avoid any contact. Lizzie couldn’t help but whisper “Ain’t we supposed to kill guys like him? And hey, here we are, giving them elevator space!”
And so, they ended up in the lobby.
“God, this place is even worse than Willy’s” Buffy muttered to herself, scanning the room only to see demons her ex-watcher would categorise as ‘utterly dangerous and in need of slayage’. Just great. No wonder Giles had this place as number one on his must be destroyed list. The place was crowded with demons, and not the good kind. Some races were harmless, like Clem. Others, like the one passing her in the lobby, were not. Her slayer senses were on high alert.
It just couldn’t get any worse.
Until she turned around and met the eyes of a certain vampire she’d hoped she never would see again. Harmony.
‘What the hell?’
“BUFFY?!”
Lizzie looked confused as one - rather tacky-looking girl, who apparently liked the color pink - behind the secretary desk shouted Buffy’s name.
Buffy froze for a few seconds, before a sound slipped her lips. It took Lizzie some time before realizing her friend was actually laughing.
The second Harmony shouted their ex-lover’s name, both Angel and Spike stopped their argument.
Spike froze, disbelief mixed with sheer joy and panic displayed over his face. All at once.
“Did ya hear…?” He asked.
“Stay here”, was the only thing Angel said before he stood up and crossed the floor to reach the door.
“The bloody hell I won’t!” Spike wasn’t really sure of what he wanted, but staying in Angel’s office when Buffy - Buffy- might be out there seemed like an impossibility.
“Spike, we don’t even know…” Angel didn’t know what to do. Maybe it was just one of Harmony’s twisted pranks to revenge the non-existent Fendi bag, but if it wasn’t… Nina! he had to remind himself. He had woken up in Nina’s bed this very morning! Had decided to move on as late as last night!
No, he told himself. She wasn’t out there.
Except, when he opened the door, the first thing he saw was a pair of very familiar emerald eyes.
“Buffy…”
Buffy seemed taken aback, but then got back to her normal self.
“Harmony as a secretary? This firm really is evil.”
