Buffy The Vampire Slayer > BTVS - Season Three
New Horizons by Gabe
[Reviews - 0]

Disclaimer: I own NOTHING. All characters and Buffy stuff belong to the all mighty Joss and to Mutant Productions. The song "New Horizons" is owned by the Moody Blues, not me. So puh-leeze don't sure, cuz everything has been returned in relatively mint condition. Okay, the story.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

No, wait, wrong story! Dang it. Oh yeah, quick author's note: This story is placed after the ascension (No it hasn't happened yet. Let me explain.) because it's my idea of the ending of the Angel and Buffy relationship. It's sweet (I think) and no demons (besides the obvious) are in it.Okay, now.... that story I've been babbling about....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy tucked a stray lock of blonde hair behind her ears as she glanced out at the dance floor at the Bronze. "They have NO idea how close we came to hell on earth... AGAIN..." She thought with a sigh, looking at the happily oblivious teenagers on the dance floor.

And then there were her friends who were on the dance floor too. Okay, so THEY knew what almost happened, and they definitely weren't their usual Shiny Happy Selves out there, but they were much more in the party mode than Buffy. They saw this as a good time to celebrate. They had marched up into the face of big hairy evil, got their asses slightly kicked in the process, but in the end.... they won.

Buffy should've been happy too. Hey, she had marched right up with them to that hairy evil, and she had gotten her ass kicked too. She had every right to be happy, and party, even Giles said so. But she couldn't. Having your heart breaking slowly in front of your eyes kinda put a damper on Xander's "Get down you funky party weasel!" philosophy. Angel was really leaving. Tonight. She found that a reasonable excuse to have a little wallow in self pity night.

Xander skidded to a halt in front of the table Buffy sat, nearly bringing the table down with him in the process as he fell to the floor. He almost instantly bounced back up, acting as though nothing had happened. Typical guy response to major embarrassment: Pray To God No One Saw.

"Buffy! My Duchess of Buffonia, this is sad. Look at your perfectly gorgeous self, and tell me you should not be partying," Xander said as he sat down in front of Buffy.

"I shouldn't be partying," Buffy replied flatly, playing with her soda straw absently.

Xander gave her a look as he sighed. "Look Buffy, this is my moment seriousness for the summer, so you better listen to me." He stopped and waited for some response that she wouldn't throw him to the ground instead of listening.

"Go ahead Xander," Buffy finally told him.

"Buffy, it's his choice. If Angel wants to leave, you should let him. You say you love him... and by now I've sucked it in and accepted that, and if you do, you should understand why he's doing this. He's just trying to do what's best for you."

"Best!? Best!?! Xander, I love him! The best is him, staying with me!!" Buffy cried, bolting into a standing position.

Xander stood up as well. "You two can't ever be together Buffy! You never could, can or ever will! If he's accepted this, why can't you!?" Xander took a moment to calm down, and took her hand. "Moving on is a part of life. It's painful, it sucks, and there is no part that is fun. But it's something we all have to do. God Buffy, we don't want to see you slip away because Angel decides to move. Don't do this to us again," Xander's voice ended up sounding pleading.

Buffy looked at Xander in a rather large amount of shock. When'd he go and grow up???

After immensely long silent moments, Buffy finally spoke, sounding like a two year old child pleading for her mother. "I just want him to say good-bye," She whispered, tears starting to form in her eyes.

Xander gave her hand a squeeze, and a reassuring smile. ‘Wait here," He told her, before disappearing in the crowd, pushing his way through the people to the front door. He met up with Willow as she came back into the club. "You get him???"

Willow nodded. "Oz, Cordelia, and Giles are dragging him here now."

The two looked up as they heard a rather loud crash from outside, some wailing from Cordelia about her nails, Oz's quiet voice becoming surprisingly loud, and Giles using some rather colorful language for the proper British Gentleman. Finally, Angel was shoved through the Bronze doors, followed by the two teenagers and the Watcher, all looking pretty mad at the reluctant vampire.

"You guys SO owe me for doing this," Cordelia commented, glaring at Angel as she brushed past the group.

"Something's never change," Xander sighed.

"What is the point of this?" Angel demanded. He had tried to go right back out the doors, but with Giles and Oz standing in front of the door, both giving him death glares, he had thought better of it.

"Angel! You can't just leave, and not say good-bye to Buffy!" Willow piped up, giving Angle a pleading glance.

"I just want to save her pain, don't you understand that?" Angel shot back.

"Look Dead Boy! I'm sick of this!!" Xander burst out. "She loves you God dammit! All she wants is for you to say good-bye! Is that so much to ask, or are you too much of a wimp to face the girl you love?"

"You are pressing the line Xander. Big time," Angel warned him, taking a step towards the teenager.

"And I don't give a damn! Go ahead Angel. Kick my ass," Xander hissed, while Willow tried to pull him back.

Angel was pulled into memories for a brief moment. Blonde hair and challenging eyes flashed before him, and he could still hear her voice telling him..."Come on. Kick my ass....."

"Angel, please!" Willow pleaded as she pulled Xander behind her.

Angel glanced over at Buffy, sitting alone at the table. "Okay..."

The four Slayerettes let out sighs of relief, and Xander finally got his temper in check.

Angel hesitantly started towards Buffy. God, he didn't know how to do this. Telling the person you love good-bye? It's not exactly something you could read up on. "Buffy?"

Buffy whirled around in her chair, her breath caught in her throat as she saw Angel. She didn't have a chance to say anything to him. He just held out hid hand, and asked softly. "Dance?"

Buffy still couldn't speak, but softly nodded her head, sliding out of her seat, and slipping her hand into his. As they went to the dance floor, Buffy caught Oz talking to the DJ and a Moody Blues song started. It was old, but the slow song's words seemed to strike home for the two. The lyrics were the words Angel couldn't find for Buffy.

"Well I've had dreams enough for one,
And I've got love enough for three.
I have my hopes to convert me,
I got my new horizons out to see."

"But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift.
It will always be that way.
Cause I know I'm gonna find my peace of mind,
Someday."

"Where is this place that we have found?
Nobody knows where we are bound.
I long to hear, I need see,
Cause I've shed tears too many for me."

"But I'm never gonna lose your precious gift.
It will always be that way.
Cause I know I'm gonna find my peace of mind.
Someday."

"On the wind,
Soaring free.
Spread your wings
I'm beginning to see.
Out of mind,
Far from you
Beyond the reach
Of the nightmare come true."

"Well I've had dreams enough for one,
And I've got love enough for three.
I have my hope to convert me.
I got my new horizons out to see."

"But I'm never gonna lose you precious gift.
It will always be that way.
Cause I know I'm gonna find my peace of mind.
Someday. hey..... Someday......"

As the words faded out, and the sad instrumental kept up, Angel held Buffy tighter for a brief moment. "I will always love you," He whispered.

"I'll always love you," Buffy whispered in return. but when she looked up for his eyes, he had all ready turned away, and was heading out of the Bronze. He had said his good-byes. Now he didn't want Buffy to see his heart breaking all over again.

The Slayerettes looked up from the table as Buffy walked over, their questioning expressions obvious.

"Thanks guys," Buffy told them softly as she sat down. Then, they all went on to discuss Xander's latest incident with one too many Ho-Ho's in his mouth at a time.
