WHY THE DELETE BUTTON IS A WONDERFUL THING by Perdita X DeVise
[Reviews - 1]

Once again, nothing belongs to me except the idea. Oh, and the vamp, seeing as I made him up myself. Everything else: Joss Whedon's. Thanks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy Summers lashed out with her foot, striking a solid blow to the vampire's abdomen. The demon collapsed, its arms encircling its waist, its monstrous, deformed face the very picture of agony.

Pulling a stake from the holster inside her light coat, the Slayer slowly approached her writhing opponent, a satisfied look on her face. "Ashtray Alley it is," she declared as she raised her arm, aimed the stake, and--

FREEZE.

There was a quiet, half-discernible muttering, and then...

Buffy Summers lashed out with her foot, striking a solid blow to the vampire's abdomen. The demon, however, managed to keep its footing, and growled fiercely at the Slayer. "You dare to attack me!"

The girl's shoulders slumped a little, and she shifted her weight, pulling a stake from its holster in her light coat. "So it's a game now?" she asked, her voice deceptively light. "Truth, Dare, Double Dare..."

Again, the vampire's only response was to growl and take another step closer. "Your blood will be delicious," he informed her, then bared his fangs and--

FREEZE.

Now a loud, anguished sigh and peculiar tapping noises occurred, just beyond the edge of the senses...

Buffy Summers lashed out with her foot, intending to connect with the vampire's abdomen. Unfortunately, her opponent was far too quick, and he grabbed her heel just before it made contact, twisting visciously, forcing the young Slayer to--

FREEZE.

The almost-heard sounds became louder, and suddenly a voice could be detected, calling plaintively, "I can't DO this!"

Buffy Summers found herself facing the same vampire she'd been fighting for hours already. The demon looked just as weary with the ongoing battle as she felt; sighing, he reverted face until he looked somewhat human again. "Don't tell me she's trying AGAIN."

Folding her arms, the Slayer glanced up at the night sky--which should, if time had any meaning whatsoever, be lightening right about then--and raised her eyebrows, waiting. "Hello? Can we finish this, please? I have a chemistry test tomorrow."

For a moment, it appeared that she'd been talking to herself. Then, there was another tortured sigh, and a disembodied voice answered pitifully, "Just a few more tries. I'm close, really I am, I'm just..."

"Just what?" Exchanging a Look with the vampire, who had also angled his face up to the heavens, Buffy began tapping her toe impatiently. "Hey, if the juices aren't flowing, don't force it. We'll understand," she added, a glimmer of hope wavering into existence in her eyes.

The voice firmed up a little. "No. I know what I want you to do, I'm just having a bit of a problem getting it across. If I work at it long enough, I might--"

"Fry your brain into a mass of misfiring neurons?" The vampire interrupted, his lanky frame bending almost double as he sat precariously on the edge of a tombstone. "Hey, whatever. But it'd be nice if you wouldn't take all night to do it."

Now the voice was downright stern. "My my, isn't the non-canon character getting cocky. But if you don't feel like going long distance..." There was the feeling of a finger being poised carefully over a very important Red Button.

The vampire straightened up quickly, attempting to look cool. "Like I said, whatever," he amended somewhat sheepishly.

"Good." The Finger of Fate was slowly removed, and the vampire breathed a sigh of relief.

Buffy let her arms drop. She was canon, and she knew it. "Hey. Can I go, or what? I mean, by all means, keep the demon forever, I don't care. But I DO have a life outside fanfic..."

The voice was silent for a moment. "I suppose I could try something else tomorrow night," it eventually said, reluctantly. Buffy had the impression of the voice's owner pouting, just a little. "But you'll be on double duty then!" it added, regaining a little force.

Her face breaking into a broad grin, the Slayer knelt to pick up her things, then turned and headed for home. "See ya later," she called over her shoulder to the vamp.

"Ah, yes." Something in the voice's tone made the demon look up again, a twinge of fear running over his spine. "I'd almost forgotten about you..."

By the end of the night, he'd found that fic planning is much, MUCH worse than fic writing.

End.
