Author's Notes: Spoilers for the A:ts episode "Hero"

I never thought of myself as a hero, because it's easy to be a hero when you have no other choice. You, Alan Francis Doyle, had a choice, but you decided to become a hero anyway. When I first met you I never realized what a good person was under that mask. I never thought I'd find a friend there.
Yeah, you heard me right, a friend. I don't think I ever really had an honest to God friend before, even when I was alive. Sure, I had drinking buddies, but with them the conversation didn't exactly run deep. Then there's Buffy, but the passion got in the way a lot of the time.
From day one you kicked my ass, and made sure I knew I still had to live in the world. I never told you how grateful I was for that, because you were right, I was losing touch. Buffy had become my world, and the fact that I'd removed myself from her made me feel even less like a man than usual. Amazingly, you saved my soul by showing me how to save others. I don't even think you ever realized what an impact you made on everyone around you. I wish you could have.
This is not to say there've been times when I wanted to throw you through a window, but I guess all friendships are like that. And we did have some amusing times together, though mostly you being amused and me brooding. I miss you, Doyle. God knows I'm going to miss you for the rest of my life. You're a hero to me.
I find myself watching the commercial you and Cordelia filmed over and over. At the end, when you ask "Am I done?" hurts the worst of all. Yes, my friend your task is finished, rest in peace.
