Buffy was in the kitchen when Spike and Clem came in the back door.
“Happy Birthday, Buffy,” Clem said.
Buffy smiled at him. “Thanks, Clem. Gang’s in the living room,” she said.
Spike put the beer in the fridge as Clem left. Buffy flinched at Spike’s swollen eye. “Spike…”
Spike held out a black velvet box in front of her.
Buffy took it and opened it. Inside was a silver ring with alternating rubies and onyx stones. “Oh, Spike,” she whispered.
Spike leaned on the counter across from her and took the box. He took the ring out and slipped it on her finger.
Buffy leaned over and kissed him softly. “Thank you.”
“Happy Birthday, Pet,” he whispered, against her lips.
Buffy smiled. “Come on,” she said, going into the living room.
Spike went in and sat next to Dawn. “Hey Lil Bit,” he said.
“Hi Spike,” Dawn said, with a smile.
Spike peered at the young girl. “You okay?” He asked.
Dawn shrugged. “I guess.”
After a few hours, Buffy was opening presents. She unwrapped Dawn’s and gasped. “Dawn, it’s gorgeous,” she said, fingering the leather.
Spike looked at his girls carefully. ‘Where did Dawn get the money for that?’
Dawn smiled. “You like it?”
“I love it,” Buffy said, giving her sister a hug as Xander came in.
Carefully, she put the coat back in the box and stood up.
Spike caught Dawn’s eye a motioned for her to follow him.
Dawn followed Spike into the kitchen. “What’s up?”
Spike looked at his little girl. “How did you afford that?” He asked, softly.
“Um…”
“Nibblet, you didn’t steal that did you?”
“No,” Dawn said, in a tiny voice.
Spike went and stood in front of her. He lifted her gaze. “Nibblet.”
“Spike, I promise, I’ll tell you alter. When the party’s over. Okay?” She pleaded.
Spike nodded and smiled a little. “K,” he said, kissing her forehead.
Dawn wrapped her arms around him. “Thank you.”
Spike stroked her hair. “You’re welcome.”
Tara walked in and smiled. “Dawnie?”
Dawn pulled away from Spike. “Yeah?”
“I gotta talk to Spike,” Tara said, with a smile.
Spike raised an eye brow as Dawn left them alone.
“You’re not in trouble,” Tara said. “But we have to talk and it’s kinda private.”
“Porch?” Spike asked.
“Yeah,” Tara said, following him out.
“What’s up Glinda?” Spike asked.
“I know about you and Buffy,” Tara said. “But I’m happy for her cuz she seems happy. But why did you tell her she came back wrong?”
“I didn’t mean it,” Spike said, softly.
“I know that, but she did ask me to look into the spell that brought her back,” she said.
“She didn’t come back wrong,” Spike said, firmly.
“Yes, I know that. But do the two of you know it?” Tara asked.
“She’s not gunna listen to me,” Spike said.
“You’d be surprised,” Tara said, going inside.
Spike shook his head and followed her.
Buffy came into the kitchen. “Hey guys.”
Tara smiled at her and went into the living room.
Spike looked at Buffy, a battle going behind his eyes.
Buffy went over to him. “You okay?”
“I don’t know,” Spike said.
Buffy ran her fingers over his face. “What happened?”
Spike brought his hands up to her wrists and pulled her hands away from his face. “We’ll talk about it later,” he said, going into the living room.
“Spike?” Buffy asked, following him.
“What did you get Buffy for her birthday, Spike?” Xander asked.
Buffy smiled. “He got me this ring,” she
said.
Willow came over and looked at it. “It’s pretty, Spike,” she said.
“Thanks, Red,” Spike said.
“I really like it,” Buffy said, smiling at Spike.
Spike smiled a little at her.
Anya went over and turned on the stereo. Everyone started dancing, as Buffy pulled Spike on the dance floor.
Everyone raised and eyebrow as the blonde vampire and slayer moved together.
After the upbeat song ended, a slow one came on. Buffy wrapped her arms around Spike’s neck and leaned against him.
Spike’s arms went around her waist and they swayed together.
Xander and Anya swayed with them as well.
Buffy twined her fingers in Spike’s neck. “I’m sorry,” she whispered so that only he would hear.
Spike kissed her temple. “Don’t worry about it,” he whispered.
Their hands were locked together squished between them. Buffy nuzzled him a little.
Dawn smiled as they lost them selves in each other.
The party progress slowly and finally everyone left except for Tara and Spike.
“Nibblet, we gotta talk,” he said.
Dawn sighed and went upstairs with him.
Spike sat on her bed. “Tell me what’s going on,” he said.
“It started awhile ago. Then it became a habit,” she said, sitting next to him.
“Why?” Spike asked.
Tears welled in Dawns eyes. “Because no one ever wants to stay and spend time with me. Buffy works all day and then she patrols all night. I never get to see her,” she said.
Spike stood up. “Hold on,” he said, going downstairs.
Buffy looked up when he came down. “What’s up?”
“We gotta talk,” he said.
Buffy frowned. “Excuse me Tara,” she said, going with Spike to the stairs. “What happened?”
“You gotta tell Dawn,” he said.
“What? Why?” Buffy asked.
“Buffy, she’s stealing. She thinks that you don’t wanna be around her cuz you work all day and ‘patrol’ all night,” he said.
Buffy sighed as she frowned.
Tara came over to them. “What’s going on?”
“Tara, Spike and I need to talk to Dawn,” she said.
Tara smiled. “Okay. I’ll see you guys later. Happy Birthday Buffy,” she said, hugging her.
“Thank you,” Buffy said, as she left. “Come on. Lets get this sorted out.”
“Don’t you think you and Dawn might wanna do this without me?” Spike asked, following
her.
“No, we’re responsible for her and we need to take care of her,” she said, going to Dawns
room.
Dawn had retrieved everything that she had stolen and they were laid out on her bed.
Buffy walked in and froze. “Dawn,” she said.
Spike came in and stood next to Dawn. She looked up at him with pleading and he shook his
head.
Dawn frowned and went over to her sister. “Um… I’ve been…”
“You’re stealing?” Buffy asked, crossing her arms.
Dawn bowed her head and tears welled in her eyes.
“Why Dawn?” Buffy asked.
Dawn looked up. “It’s not like you care why,” she said, bitterly.
“Why wouldn’t I care?” Buffy asked.
“You’re never hear,” Dawn said.
Buffy looked at Spike and he nodded.
“Well for one thing I work,” she said.
“Then you come home and patrol all night. When do you sleep?” Dawn asked.
Buffy blushed. “Um..”
Dawn’s eyes widened. “You’re not
patrolling are you?”
“Yes I do. Just not all night,” Buffy said.
“Then what…” Dawn looked over at Spike, who couldn’t meet her eyes. She looked back at Buffy who was beat red. “You’re with Spike?”
“Yeah. We patrol then we go to his place,” Buffy said, softly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dawn asked.
“Because I was scared. I didn’t think it was normal to like Spike. I guess it’s better that you know, though. But what are we gunna do about this?” Buffy asked.
“I’ll stop, its just things are just too hard,” Dawn said.
Spike wrapped his arms around her from behind. “Well things are gunna get better.”
“Promise?” Buffy asked, before realizing it.
Spike looked up at her as she approached him. She kissed him with Dawn still in the middle.
Dawn and Buffy wrapped their arms around him and he kissed the tops of their heads softly. “I promise.”
