"Melissa, have you been talking to Xander?" Dawn asked her friend Melissa as they walked towards Dawn's house.
"Well, he may have had a teensy bit of influence, but I've been interested in this stuffy basically my entire life." Melissa said as she kicked a rock forward.
"It's the military though. People get killed in the military." Dawn argued. Melissa had just told Dawn her choice in career and Dawn was definitely not liking it.
"Yes, but the Air Force is one of the safer branches, plus I'm going to be an aircraft mechanic which shouldn't be that dangerous. Plus we live in Sunnydale for crying out loud. This place is pretty dangerous." Melissa argued back and them started whistling the tune to 'Boondocks'.
"You are so confusing." Dawn said suddenly, they had been quiet for a little while.
"What do you mean?" Melissa asked smiling, that was her always smiling, and Dawn loved to tease her about it.
"Just you love the military, love country music, love to read, you like rock music, you just can be confusing. You're so quiet but once people get to know you they'd be pretty surprised." Dawn said as they walked into her house.
"Ok. Where is everybody?" Melissa said as she came into the house.
"Buffy's with the girls training them and Spike's probably downstairs sleeping. Think Willow might be in England with Giles." Dawn said. The only reason Melissa knew about Buffy being the slayer and everything was because Dawn had accidentally let it slip.
"Alright." Was all Melissa said as she went over to sit on the couch. That was Melissa she would listen to what you say and hear it, but wouldn't say much. She could be a talker though and it always seemed she was laughing. There would be times when Dawn had had her over for a sleepover and it was about one in the morning and Dawn did something really, well not stupid, but it got them laughing and Melissa had a hard time stopping, almost everything anyone would say made her start up again.
"Wanna watch a movie?" Dawn asked as she came to sit next to Melissa.
"'Ello Niblet, Melissa." Spike said as he came in. Melissa smiled realizing Dawn had been right, he had been asleep, his shirt was all wrinkled and his hair full of extremely messy hair.
"Hey, Spike, will tell Melissa hear that she's crazy." Dawn said and Melissa knew they were back to the same topic they had been on when they were walking to the house.
"Why?" Spike asked sitting in the armchair.
"Dawn thinks I'm crazy for wanting to go into the Air Force." Melissa said as she pulled her legs up to her chest in her normal fashion.
"Well, if want my opinion, I say it's fine. There's no problem with a girl wanting to help others or fight for something they believe in." Spike said looking at both Melissa and Dawn, but mostly Dawn who got what he was saying.
"My sister's different, she was chosen, Melissa wasn't." Dawn argued but knew it was a lost cause.
"Fine I'll try not to bug you about it anymore. I just don't want to lose my friend." Dawn said smiling slightly.
"I'll be careful. Plus it's not like I'll be alone there, both you and I have friends who are going and they'll protect me." Melissa said trying to reassure Dawn.
"I know." Dawn said and that was that, Melissa was going and there was no more talking about it.
