Spike smiled as Buffy drowned another glass of whiskey and gagged. “Okay, Buffy. No more,” he said, removing all whiskey from her view. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t wanna talk about it,” Buffy grumbled, as her head spun.
Spike stood up. “I’ll be right back,” he said, disappearing upstairs.
Buffy staggered to his bed and collapsed on it. His comforting smell redeveloped her as tears slid from her eyes.
Spike came back down and frowned at her. “Pet?”
Buffy sniffled. “Yeah?”
Spike cautiously sat next to her. “Are you okay?” He asked.
“How come this place is the only place I wanna be?” She asked.
“Because you’re safe here and you don’t have to pretend,” he said. “I brought you a bottle of water to balance out the whiskey.”
Buffy pushed her self and gratefully accepted the bottle. “Thank you,” she said.
Spike smiled and but the back of his hand against her forehead. “You wanna talk?”
Buffy shook her head. “Not tonight,” she mumbled. “Tonight, I wanna get some sleep. Can I stay here?”
Spike smiled. “Always,” he said, fondly.
Buffy smiled and snuggled into his bed. “Thank you, Spike,” she whispered.
Spike pulled the covers up to her chin and kissed her forehead. “Good night Pet,” he whispered.
The next morning, Buffy woke in her own bed with a slight headache. There was a note and a thing of Advil on her nightstand.
‘I carried you home an hour before dawn. You might have a slight headache and these should help. I hope you slept okay.
Love,
Spike
Buffy smiled and took some Advil when Dawn appeared in the door. “Where were you last night?”
“Spike’s,” Buffy answered. “I fell asleep.”
Dawn smiled a little. “I’m glad you two are getting along. He really took care of me Buffy and he still does,” she said.
“Dawn if I tell you something do you promise not to say anything?” Buffy asked.
“Of course,” Dawn said, sitting next to her sister.
“I was in Heaven,” Buffy said. “I’ve been with Spike so much because he understands.”
‘What wouldn’t I understand, Buffy?” Dawn
asked. “I love you just as much as he does.”
“I know you do. Spike wasn’t trying to make me okay. You were all so happy that I was back and I didn’t want to disappoint you,” Buffy said, tucking a strand of golden hair behind her ear.
“Spike was happy to have you back,” Dawn said.
“But Spike didn’t have anything to do with it,” Buffy said.
“Neither did I or Giles,” Dawn said, getting upset.
“Dawn, I told you. I wanted to confide in Spike. There’s nothing wrong with that,” Buffy said, softly.
“No there’s not, but you should have told me also,” Dawn said, leaving.
Buffy swore silently and changed her clothes. She did her hair and make up before leaving the house.
Spike looked up as the door opened. “Buffy?”
“I told Dawn about where I was and now she’s mad at me,” Buffy grumbled, flopping in the chair.
“Came to escape the burden?” Spike asked, slightly hurt.
“I came here to see you,” Buffy said, looking at him.
Spike smiled and went over to her. “You need anything?’
Buffy looked at him with a shy gaze. “A hug,” she said, softly.
Spike opened his arms without hesitation.
Buffy got up and snuggled into his arms. Her arms went around his waist and she began to relax. “I think I love you,” she whispered into his shoulder.
Spike tensed. “Wha-?”
“As a friend,” she said, picking her head up. “I love you as a friend but maybe one day I might fall in love with you. Is that okay?”
Spike smiled and kissed her forehead. “Its more then I could ever ask for,” he said, putting her head on his shoulder. “I’ll talk to Dawn later.”
Buffy inhaled is comforting scent and just let him hold her for a long time.
When the sun set, Spike walked Buffy home.
Dawn came out of the kitchen just as Buffy and Spike walked through the door.
“Hey Dawn,” Buffy said, closing the door.
“Buffy,” Dawn said, before going upstairs.
Buffy closed her eyes against her tears.
“I’ll go talk to her,” Spike said, going after the young girl. He paused outside her door. “Dawn?”
“Yeah?” Came teary voice.
“Can I come in?” Spike asked, softly.
“I guess,” Dawn mumbled.
Spike opened the door and frowned at her laying on her stomach, tears working their way down her face. He went over to her and sat next to her. “What’s going on?”
“Buffy’s like totally rejecting me,” Dawn whimpered.
“Why do you think that?” Spike asked, rubbing her back.
“Cause she chose to trust you over me,” Dawn said.
“I think you’re lucky she told you at all. She wasn’t ready for anyone to know. It’s not that she didn’t trust you, she wasn’t sure how you’d react,” Spike said, stroking her hair.
“But she told you,” Dawn said, turning over.
“She doesn’t care what I think,” Spike pointed out.
Dawn sighed. “Yeah well…”
Spike smiled and kissed her forehead. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I know. I love you ,too,” Dawn said, with a smile.
Spike stood up and left with a smile on his face.
Buffy looked up as Spike came into the kitchen. “So?”
“I talked to her. The two of you are gunna have to take it form here,” Spike said.
Buffy smiled. “I need to patrol,” she said.
“No, you need to stay her and do the sister thing with Dawn. I’ll patrol and I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, leaving.
Buffy went upstairs and knocked on Dawns door. “Dawnie?”
“Yeah?” Came Dawns voice raw from crying.
“Can we talk?”
“Sure,” Dawn said.
Buffy opened the door and went towards her sister. “I’m sorry,” she said, softly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Dawn asked. “Things haven’t been right since you’ve been back. You and Spike are both rejecting me.”
“Dawn that’s not true,” Buffy said.
“How come I never see him them?” Dawn asked.
“Maybe because he thinks that you don’t need him anymore cuz I’m home,” Buffy answered.
“But I do,” Dawn whispered. “He was the only one who took care of me. The gang treated me as a burden and Spike treated me like I was a person. He had the courage to stay with me. Every time I was in any kind of pain, he was there. He never judged me and he never talked about you. He helped me be strong and I helped him let you go. You have no idea how hard it was for him. He was so scared to let me be by myself. He thought he would lose me if I was out of his sight.”
Buffy looked amazed. “He did all that?” She whispered, sitting on Dawn’s bed.
“And more. The slightest thing freaked him out. He didn’t want me in any kind of pain. At you funeral, he was practically holding me up. I couldn’t go home cuz I couldn’t bear the thought of an empty house. He took me to his crypt and he held me while I cried. I stayed in his arms for days. Neither one of us could fine the will to move.”
“Spike doesn’t like showing his emotions very well,” Buffy said, softly.
“But he will show them to me,” Dawn said, softly. “He’s not embarrassed to love me. Probable because I don’t care what your friends think.”
Buffy sighed. “Fine but, Spike’s…”
“Everything you are,” Dawn said. “Buffy, I wish you wouldn’t keep things from me. Whatever it is, I can handle it. You cant protect me from the world.”
Buffy met her sisters gaze. “Okay. You’re right. Lets get some sleep,” she said.
Dawn smiled at her sister and left the room.
The next night, Buff and Spike met each other for patrol.
“Did you work everything out with Dawn?” Spike asked, punching his vampire in the nose.
“Yep,” Buffy said, back flipping over a few head stones. “I found out some very interesting stuff about you though,” she said, staking her vampire.
“Like what?” Spike asked, staking his vampire as well.
“Like what you did for her while I was gone,” Buffy said, looking at him.
“Oh that,” Spike said, a little embarrassed.
“You took real good care of her. She misses you a lot,” she said.
Spike raised an eyebrow. “She does?”
“Yeah,” Buffy said, sliding her hand into his. “We can be a family now. The three of us.”
Spike smiled and his eyes lit up. “You want me to be a part of your family?” He asked.
“You already are,” Buffy said, looking up at him, smiling.
Spike smiled back and leaned down to kiss her tenderly.
