Buffy walked down the street, silent tears streaming down her face. She sensed a vampire but knew instinctively who it was. She really wanted, needed, him now, but had no voice to tell him.
Spike walked up to her side. “Buffy… You really should come home,” he said, quietly.
Buffy turned to him. “I can’t. Too many reminders that I failed.” She started walking away again.
Spike, being the stubborn idiot he was didn’t let her get off that easy and moved in front of her. “Buffy, this is nonsense. I know you’re upset, but come home. We need you.”
“What about what I need?” Buffy yelled.
Spike looked at her with soft, understanding eyes. “What do you need, Buffy?”
Buffy looked up at him. “I need to feel your arms around me,” she whispered.
Spike wrapped his arms around carefully and hugged her tightly. He felt her body start shaking and tear drops on his shirt. “It’s okay, Pet. I’m here.”
Buffy clung to him and tears flooded down her face. Then the heavens opened up and rain came pouring down.
“Take me home,” Buffy whispered.
Spike allowed her to lean on him as he made his way toward the Summers home.
When they walked in the door, Buffy saw glared coming from everyone. She couldn’t face them and went to the back porch.
Spike watched as Buffy’s shoulders slumped. He growled at everyone else. “What the bloody hell is wrong with all of you?”
“She was careless!” Giles yelled.
“She was doing her job!” Spike yelled back, vamping unconsciously.
“She refused to listen to us!”
“Buffy doesn’t need to listen. She needs you sorry idiots to fall in line. Buffy knows what she’s doing,” Spike going to his slayer and swallowing the demon. “Pet?”
Buffy didn’t say anything and he sat next to her. “Buffy, you need to get some sleep and get out of the rain,” Spike said.
Buffy turned to look at him. “Giles is right. I don’t know what I’m doing and I’m not being a very good slayer.”
Spike sighed. “Buffy if you didn’t know what you were doing then they’d all be dead,” he said.
Buffy stood up and went to the middle of the yard. “Spike, there is just so much going on right now,” she said.
“I know,” Spike said, getting up. “But we can fix it.”
Buffy looked at him with tears in her eyes. “How?” She asked, not seeming to care that she was drenched to the bone.
Spike frowned. “Right now, lets go inside and get dried off,” he said. “Then you get some sleep and we’ll talk about this in the morning.”
Buffy shook her head. “I can’t.”
“Buffy,” Spike said, beginning to lose his patience.
“I can’t go in there. Every room is full of SITs. The only room that doesn’t have brats in it is the basement,” she said.
“So sleep in the basement,” Spike said.
“But what about you?” Buffy asked.
“Don’t worry about me,” Spike said, turning Buffy toward the house. He gave her gentle push. “Go.”
“Thank you,” Buffy whispered.
Spike smiled and watched as she did as he said. He went inside and went downstairs himself after he had a little blood.
Downstairs, Buffy was sound asleep in one of Spike’s t-shirts and was curled up in his bed.
Spike shrugged off his duster, and changed his wet clothes as silently as he could. He settled himself in the easy chair across from her and was asleep seconds later.
Some time later, Spike was woken by a whimpering sound. He looked at the clock which said 2:48, then he glanced at Buffy, who was involved in some sort of night mare. He got up and crouched beside her. “Buffy, wake up,” he said, putting his hand on her cheek. “Its just a night mare.”
Buffy’s eyes flew open. “Spike?” She asked, panting.
Spike sat on the edge of the cot. “It was just a nightmare.” He brushed a lock of hair out of her face. “You okay?”
Buffy took a few deep breaths. “I don’t know,” she said.
“What happened?” Spike asked, softly.
“Everyone was killed except for us but you turned again,” she whimpered.
Spike gently pulled her up and into his arms. “Shhh. It was justa dream.”
Buffy wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her head in his neck. “Oh, god, Spike. It felt so real,” she whimpered.
Spike rocked her back and forth and smoothed her hair back. “I’m here and I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “Promise.”
Buffy’s muscles relaxed and she sighed. “Good, because I need you.”
Spike kissed her forehead. “Try and get some rest,” he said.
Buffy whimpered when he tried to pull away. “Stay.”
They situated themselves on the cot and Buffy was asleep almost instantly. Spike nuzzled her neck and made sure she fell asleep. “I love you Buffy,” he whispered, before falling asleep himself.
