I don't own any of these characters ( But don't we all wish we had thought of them first:)
Authors note: Okay, i think all that you really need to know is that this happens about a week after "Becoming". I was watching "Passion for like the 100th time and it occured to me " How did Joyce take it when she found out about Angel being a vampire?" So i set of to writethe conversation in which Joyce got all the answers to her questions. I am very very pro Buffy/Angel, so those of you who are totally against them....well i encourage you to read this anyway:) it doesn't have Buffy or Angel in it directly, but they are mentions several times:) alrighty then:) on with the show
Joyce stormed into the library, pushing the swinging doors hard, furry written on her face. In the library, Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and the newest member of the Scooby Gang, Oz, all sat at the table, discussing something in hushed tones when they heard Joyce come into the library. They all turned to look at her, slacked jawed and slightly bewildered at the hatred they saw in her eyes.
She walked strait over to Giles and slapped a piece of paper down on the table in front of him. The hard bang of her hand on the table made all of the gang jump, even Giles. But he had an idea about why Buffy's mom was so mad.
Joyce huffed a few breaths out and then jumped right in. " What is a vampire slayer, and why did you make Buffy into one?!?!?!" Joyce screamed at Giles.
Giles looked down at the note, scanned it quickly, and then handed it to Willow. He then turned his full attenetion towards Joyce's angry figure. " Joyce, Mrs. Summers, lets calm down, shall we? Now why don't you have a seat." Giles got up from his chair and motioned to it.
" No! Mr. Giles I will not have a seat! I want explanations and I want them now! What gives you the right to be filling my daughters head with all this imaginary evil?" She stopped suddenly and sat down in the chair, bringing her hands up to her face.
Giles walked up to the front of the table and let his gaze wander across the faces of the people who had become such a vital part of his life. His eyes rested on Willow's and something passed between them. Willow nodded softly.
Joyce sniffed and straitened up, then looked at Giles expectantly.
" I suppose you want me to start from the begginning."
Some what calmer now, Joyce spoke. " Yes, Mr. Giles, that would be a perfect place to start."
Giles took of his glasses and absently started rubbing the bridge of his nose. He looked up unexpectantly as Willow's soft voice broke the silence.
" Giles... why don't I start."
Giles looked at the chiled and his face softened, gratefully. Willow understood the type of stress that Giles had been put under the last couple of months. Actually, in the last two weeks. He was still recovering from his...bout with Angelus. As was Willow herself. He marveled at how much Willow had grown in the last year with the influence of Buffy in her life. He smiled, encouraging her to continue.
Willow turned to face Mrs. Summers. " This world has been around a long....long time. But before it was ever recorded, before humans were even around, our earth was ruled by demons." She paused as Joyce gave her a quizical, slightly skeptial look. " They lived on this earth way longer than even we have, and earth was sort of ...well...their ...hell. But slowly mortal animals started to inhabit this earth, forcing the demons to leave this dimension, making a way for humans to come. Anyway, the last demon to leave this dimension fed off a human, mixing their blood. The human became one with the demon...like a person possesed by the demons soul. So this demon in human form fed off another, and another, who fed off others, and yet others, and..."
" Thank you, Willow," Giles stoped her short, seeing they were about to be lead into another trip to Willonia. " I think that I can take it from here." Joyce turned in her seat to face Giles. He faltered slightly by the look on her face. No longer anger. Now it was amusment and open curiosity. " So started the vampire race. They live on the earth. The look like humans, untill the morph into their demon form when they hunt and feed. They can't go in the sunlight, they combust when it is directly on them. They are immortal, and the only ways to kill them are by staking them throught the heart with a wooden stake, cutting off their heads, or setting them on fire. They are repelled by garlic, holy water, and crosses. They aren't allowed into you're house unless you invite them in."
" This is all very....interesting, Mr. Giles. But what does any of this have to do with Buffy?"
" Well, ever since there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world with the strength and skill to hunt and kill the vampires." Willow and Xander smiled sadly across the table at eachother, remembering how Buffy had said that this was Giles' favorite part. " Buffy is a slayer." He smiled ruefully to himself. " Quite a good one, I might add. Her skill and power is beyond measure."
" Uh, Giles," Cordelia broke in. " I care about Buffy and all, and trying to make her mom understand or whatever, but my parents are having this dinner party tonight and..."
" Cordelia, you are free to leave if you wish."
" Actually, I really should leave too. We have a gig tonight at the Bronze and I'm supposed to be practicing right now with Devon." Oz said. " Cordy, I could give you a ride if you need one."
" Thanks, Oz, but I brought my car. I have to go pick up my dress anyway."
" Alright, then. I'll see you two on saturday."
" Sure, Giles." Cordelia said.
" We'll be here." Oz said.
Willow and Xander got out of their seats to give their "loved ones" a kiss good bye and then sat back down, ready for s discussion with Buff's mom. Giles Waited untill Cordelia and Oz had left to continue.
" So, wait," Joyce broke the silence. " So how did Buffy become a slayer? I'm not a slayer, and neither was my mom, nor my grandmother. So its not and inherited thing, right?"
" No, its not an inherited gene. Its just fate. I'm not even exactly sure how the slayers are chosen....they just are. Like a part of the universe. And to every slayer is a Watcher..."
" Which is what you are."
" Yes. The difference between the Slayer and the Watcher is that the Watchers are handed down genes. I am one, as was my father before me, and my grandmother before him. Our purpose is to teach the slayer how to use her powers, and to teach her how to fight all sorts of demons and mystical forces, not just vampires."
Seeing the overwhelmed look on Joyces face, Xander decided to jump in and lighten the mood alittle. " Alittle much to take in, huh Mrs. Summers?" He smiled at her genuinely. " Want me to go run for some Ho-Ho's?"
She smiled at the boy. " No, thank you, Xander. I think i can make it." She turned back to Giles
" Okay, I guess that explains why and what Buffy is, but why did she leave? If she's been dealing with this for a while, what monster pushed her over the edge?"
Giles blew out his breath and looked at Willow and Xander. Xander was looking hard at the table, clenched jawed, stoned face. Willow was fiddling with the hem of her sweater, but he could tell that she was trying to hold in her tears. * Now onto the really difficult subjects* Giles said to himself.
" Its true, Buffy has thawrted many type of demons, time and time again. But she came across one demon that she wouldn't...or couldn't fight."
He waited for Joyce to Say something. When she didn't he continued. " Do you remember hearing about Angel, Joyce? "
" Angel...yes. The young man that Buffy....dated."
He knew that this was going to be hard for Joyce to digest, but he didn't see the point in softening the blow now. " Angle is a vampire, Joyce."
She blew up. " He's a what?!?!? Angel is a vampire!!!! And he!....and Buffy!....they!....Isn't that illeagal or something? She's supposed to kill vampires not...Isn't there some sort of rule against that? Why didn't you stop her?!?!"
" Well," Xander broke in, " Thats what I've been saying the whole time but does anyone....owww!!!"
Willow kicked Xander under the table. " Xander."
" Angel was a very different vampire than most," Giles continued. " when we first met him."
" And how is that even possible?" Joyce stated cooly. " Aren't all vampires demons?"
" Yes, they are. But Angel had his soul returned to him, as a form of punishment. When a person changes into a vampire, the person dies and the soul leaves. But in Angel's case, a curse was placed upon him that gave him back his soul. He retained back all of his humanity and personality that he had when he was mortal, only he still had the demon inside him, which made him immortal. He was supposed to suffer for all of the crimes that he had committed when her had been a vampire with out a soul. And he did. He spent all of his time trying to rid the world of his kind...."
Willow jumped in, needing to explain this part to Buffy's mom. Giles, understanding, let her. " Thats how Buffy met him. He helped her a bunch of times fighting demons, even saving her life once....more than once. He saved all our lives." She glanced at Xander. He was looking at the books on the table, but she knew that he understood her.
She continued. " There was alot of chemistry between them. Besides their obvious difference of being a vampire and a slayer, they really connected. They seemed so right for eachother. I'm sure if they had been born during the same time period..." She stopped, realising that they probly didn't want to know her view on what would have happened had they been born durring the same time. " Anyway, they started dating. And it was really starting to work for them. They were good for eachother in so many ways. He could help her fight, and she didn't haveto be distracted with protecting him. And he could protect her when she was overwhelmed. It was interesting for me to watch them when they were together. They could always have a conversation with out saying a word. Their eyes said everything for them."
" Then came this one demon...he was called the Judge."
Xander jumped in now, not wanting to be left out of the story telling. " The Judge was this really ugly demon that couldn't be killed by any known weapon." He smiled now, full of pride. " But I remembered some of the army stuff from Halloween and was able to form this plan that involved a rocket launcher, and we took him down before he couls do any damage."
Willow continued again. " Buffy and Angel had gone to find out if Spike and Drucilla had finally finished assembling the Judge. The got into a fight with the Judge, but they managed to get away and go back to Angels appartment. And...well..."
Giles picked up here, seeing Willow's discomfort. " This was the night in which they had sex, Joyce. What we didn't know about Angels curse, though, was that if he was able to have one moment of happiness, he would lose his soul and the demon would rule his body once more."
" I don't think that when they did...it...that that was what let Angel's soul go. I think that Buffy had been weakening the curse all along, and they didn't even know it." Willow said, slightly defensive. She knew the men's take on Angel and Buffy and needed to defend them.
" And that brings us to the present." Giles stated. " We've been battling with Angel now for months. Its been terribly hard for Buffy...." He pause, letting the full effect of what he was about to say hit him. " She loved him very much. And I believe that, while he had his soul, he loved her equally. It was terribly hard for her, fighting him. It was hard for her to train herself how to act around him. How to kick his face in...and not melt into his arms when he was down. And I think she always held the hope that one day her Angel would come back to her."
It became silent. They all fell into their own thought...their own silent mourning for Buffy.
Joyce finally broke the silence. " Spike. Is he...a-a demon?"
" Yes. A vampire. He killed two slayers before Buffy. But he never was able to kill her." Giles said quietly.
" He...Buffy brought him into our home. They planned out a way to stop Angel. That was when I found out that she was a slayer. We had a huge fight. She said that she had to go save the world...and I told her that if she left she should never come back."
She looked at each of them, he gaze stopping on Giles. Then she started to cry. She cried for herself. She cried for Buffy. But mostly...she just cried.
