"Can you do it?" Spike asked. Celeste looked up from putting her M-16 together and regarded Spike with an offended look.

"Of course I can do it!" she snapped indignantly. Spike smiled.

"Good......but if you screw it up.." Spike's face turned dark and he grabbed the girl by the throat and slammed her against the wall.

"I'll kill you instead," Instead of looking panicked, Celeste gave him a disgusted look and knocked his arm away.

"I've been assassinating people since I was 12, I think I can handle some blond Californian ditz," Suppressing a smile she glanced pointedly at Spike's hair

"No offense intended"

"None taken," he growled, giving the impression of the exact opposite. The body bag that had been laying in the corner clinked as she picked it up.

"You have everything you need then?" Spike asked, gesturing towards the bag.

"Just show me where to set up," she snapped. Spike opened the door

"After you madam,"

Buffy sat on a headstone, looking around the graveyard, which was silent except for the symphony of crickets located near the wall. She sighed and checked her watch. 1:34. She'd been out for three hours and had only seen one vamp, which she had quickly disposed of. He had been fresh out of the grave, and not much of an opponent. She looked down at her watch again. So where were all the big guns?

Celeste dropped the bag with a resounding clank. Spike switched on the light and stepped to the side of the door, allowing access to Celeste.

"Will it do?" he inquired. She walked to the center of the room, studying the large steel table with built in restraints. What more could a girl hope for? She thought with a smile. Celeste grabbed her bag and tossed it onto the table. Unzipping it, she pulled out a large knife. Turning it so the silver glistened in the light, she smiled.

"It'll do,"

Buffy's eyes shot open halfway to the ground.

"Ugh" she gasped, hitting the ground hard and getting a mouthful of dirt in the process.

"Eww, gross!" she spit it out and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. And amused chuckle sounded behind her. As she pushed herself onto her hands and knees, she turned towards the sound of the laugh. Angel smiled

"Sleeping on the job?" Even in the dark he saw her blush a deep red.

"It's been a slow night...and I was tired.." she stammered, immediately taking to the defensive.

"And what, by the way, are you doing here?" He walked over and helped her up.

"Looking for you,"

"Aren't you always?" Buffy replied, stifling a yawn. Angel looked at her, concerned

"You shouldn't be out here when you're so tired. It's not safe," he scolded her gently

"It's late, I'll walk you home," Buffy started to protest, then thought better of it.

"Ok," she relented.

"I'll go home, but you don't need to walk me," Now it was Angels turn to protest.

"But Buffy--"

"No arguing!" she cut him off

"I just feel like taking a nice walk home, having a hot shower then going to bed." Angel wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close.

"Sounds fun to me.." Buffy laughed and pushed him away.

"You wish.." she said with a smile. She picked up a dropped stake and gave him a quick kiss.

"I'll see you tomorrow," With that, Buffy turned and walked towards the exit of the graveyard. Angel sighed, watching her go, then set off in the opposite direction.

Celeste stepped out from behind the small mausoleum and watched the two walk away from each other. Smiling she reached down and picked up a large stone slab that had broken off the building. After checking that her way was clear, Celeste slipped out of the shadows and hurried off in the direction Buffy had gone in. She saw the Slayer ahead, walking slowly and looking up at the sky. Celeste quickly caught up with her.

"Buffy?"

Buffy turned at the sound of her name. Celeste took the stone and slammed it against the side of Buffy's head. Buffy cried out, then slumped to the ground. Smiling in satisfaction, Celeste tossed aside the stone and grabbed the unconscious Slayers body. She tossed Buffy over her shoulder and walked out of the graveyard. This is going perfectly.

Angel had still been lurking in the graveyard when he heard Buffy cry out. He raced towards the area where the sound had come from. Angel stopped suddenly, sniffing the air. He felt his game face shift involuntarily as he recognized the scent of blood. He quickly found the stone by a tree. Holding the stone in his hands, he was barely aware of the furious growling that sounded deep in his throat. This was Buffy's blood. He knew it. Angel took a deep scent of the night air. Blood still lingered on the air currents. And as long as it did, he would find her. He threw the stone back to the grass and started to follow the trail, like a dog after a fox. Whoever had dared to harm his Buffy, was soon going to regret it.

Buffy awoke with a moan. Hear head hurt so badly, it felt as if there was someone inside it with a jackhammer. She cracked open her eyes, which was a difficult task since they were almost swollen shut. Her efforts were rewarded with a momentary blindness from the harsh flourescent light that was buzzing overhead. After attempting to brush her blood matted hair out of her eyes, Buffy soon discovered she was strapped down to what appeared to be an operating table to her perception. As she assessed the situation she was in, Buffy remembered her attacker. Celeste smiled from the chair in which she sat. It was a cold smile, one that rivaled ice. Buffy felt an equally cold pang shoot through her heart as she saw the knife the girl was holding. Buffy felt a single tear escape from the corner of her swollen and bruised eye. Buffy was scared. Buffy knew she was going to die.

Celeste walked over to Buffy. She smiled as she watched Buffy struggle to get free.

"It's no use Slayer. Those things were made to hold a vampire, they can surely hold you."

"Why?" Buffy asked shortly. She had been in plenty of situations worse then this and gotten out alive. So why had she felt so scared when she had looked into this girls' eyes? Come on Buffy, think! She gave herself a mental pep talk How are we going to get out of this? She glared at Celeste

"Who are you and why are you doing this to me?" Celeste grinned and gave a mock bow."I am Celeste, assassin extrodinaire. As for the why, the money's good, not to mention it's fun. Your name came to me with a special request for torture...by a certain blond vampire with a death wish for you.

"Spike." Buffy hissed angrily. Celeste nodded.

"So you know my employer. Anyways, even though I am having a lovely time chatting with you, I really need to get to work," Turning, she picked up a gleaming silver scalpel of a metal tray. With a smile she turned back to Buffy, a maniacal light in her eyes.

"Don't worry Buffy" Celeste soothed.

"This won't hurt....much."

Angel walked down the street. He was a little confused. Why would Buffy be in the new housing development? No one had even moved in yet. Even as he thought this, he saw a light shining in the window of a house down the block. He knew Buffy was there. He could feel her. Angel picked up his pace and moved stealthily towards the house.

* * *
Buffy screamed as the scalpel pierced the skin between her breasts. Tears ran down her face in twin rivulets, no longer able to be contained. She screamed again, a long piercing cry of pain, as Celeste ripped a long gash from the first puncture wound down the Buffy's navel. Blood poured from the wound as Buffy sobbed an pulled at the straps that condemned her to this to torture. Celeste tossed aside the scalpel and picked up what looked like a pair of surgical tongs. She positioned the tongs over the gaping wound in Buffy's body and prepared to lower them into the incision. Concentrating completely on the task at hand she never even saw the attack coming. A quick kick sent the tongs sailing out of her hand, and a second sent her flying into the wall, which she slid down against to the floor. Picking herself up quickly, she turned and looked at her attacker, adjusting herself to the fact she was now the attackee. Angel, in full game face, growled furiously at Celeste.

"Don't ever touch my girlfriend!" He advanced on Celeste menacingly when a weak voice called out to him

"Angel.." He looked over and saw Buffy, bleeding severely and crying.

"My god..." Angel rushed to her and quickly undid the straps holding her prisoner. Ignoring the feeling the scent of so much blood aroused in him, Angel helped Buffy start up. As soon as her abdominal muscles began to tighten, and bend, she cried out in pain and sank back down.

"It hurts too much," she whimpered softly. Angel took off his shirt and pressed it gently, yet firmly to Buffy's wound.

"Hold it there" he ordered firmly. "I'm just going to deal with..." he broke off as he turned around. Where had the girl gone? Then he saw her, making a mad dash out the door. He whispered softly

"Hold on, please!" then quickly gave chase.

As soon as she saw the vampire was distracted, Celeste ran out of the house as if the devil himself was after her. Maybe this one actually was the devil. Celeste knew better then to attempt to fight him. Feet pounding on the cement, she ran down the sidewalk, pausing only for a moment to check behind her. No one. Celeste breathed a sigh of relief and turned back around. Angel smiled tightly at her.

"I think we need to have a talk," Celeste saw the fury boiling in his intense dark eyes and attempted to dart away. She fell heavily to the ground as Angel tackled her and pinned her down.

"I said," he growled angrily

"I think we need to talk"

"I don't!" Celeste snapped, struggling to away from him. Angel backhanded her angrily.

"You try to kill my girlfriend and then you tell me we have nothing to talk about?! Sorry to disagree with you!"

A bloody scratch crossed the side of Celeste's face, inflicted by Angel's Claddagh ring. His voice lost its angry tone and became so deadly calm it frightened her.

"I won't let you hurt her...you'll die first," Celeste laughed

"You're killing her. As you stand here bickering with me she is dying. Bleeding to death, slowly" She shoved Angel off of her and stood up, smiling triumphantly.

"Mission accomplished," Angel punched her in the face sending her back to the ground, the raced back to the house where Buffy lay.

Buffy was briefly aware of shorts periods of pain, and harsh light, and periods of dark and peacefulness. They just blended together. As she willed herself towards the peaceful darkness, she heard a voice cut through her mind and pull her back to reality

"Buffy!"

"Angel.." she whispered, incapable of anything more. As he raced to her side and looked down at her wounds he paled visibly.

"Oh shit.." he cursed. The shirt was soaked with blood, and so was Buffy.

"Is it bad?" she asked in a small voice. "It's bad" he confirmed, swallowing in attempt to rid the lump that had formed in his throat.

"Am I going to die?" Angel looked sharply at her. She just stared back at him, her green eyes tired, and defeated looking. He gently picked her up, careful to mind the pain she must be feeling

"No.." he said determinedly

"I am not going to let you die!" He walked out of the house as quickly as he could go without causing her too much more pain.

"Angel...Please just stop!" She started to cry. Angel stopped and laid her gently down onto the grass, pulling her head against his chest.

"I know I'm dying," she said softly.

"Buffy, you aren't going to--"

"I am!" she cut him off

"I'm not scared...I was, but now I know that this is how it's going to be." She laughed bitterly

"The only way to stop being the Slayer....With my luck, I'll still have to kill them in my afterlife..If there is one," She looked up at him, her eyes holding a bit of the spark that they had earlier that night

"I love you," she said softly.

"I love you," he whispered back, kissing her lips lightly. He noticed that her breathing was coming in ragged gasps now. "I'll...miss..you.." she said weakly

"See...you..in..heaven.." And with that she gave a last gasp, and went limp in his arms. Angel held her body close to his as a single, blood-red tear ran down his face, matching the blood that covered both of them.

"Until heaven," he whispered, even though she was far from hearing.
