Chapter One

Buffy was walking down the hallway of her new highschool with her new friend, Willow. She’d been forced to move from Las Angeles to here, and she was not a happy camper. Her parents had been fighting for as long as she could remember, but she never thought that they’d get a divorce. Not to mention her forced occupation. That was another thing she was not happy about. She’d been made to leave her boyfriend, Pike, behind. Pike wasn’t like his name sounded, though he liked for people to think so. He was a very nice person, and he treated Buffy like a queen. She met him in the woods behind Hemery. He’d just found out that his best friend, Benny was a vampire and had decided to leave town. He’d been emancipated from his abusive family when he was 15 years old, so he didn’t have anything holding him back.

On the drive out of the city, he’d been attacked by three vampires, and forced into the woods. Buffy was lucky because she was actually following the three from the street where she was walking. When she saw Pike she groaned at having to save him, because she’d run into him a couple of times already. He’d made fun of her because of her name and her friends. She admitted that she was a bit of an air head, but being called as the slayer really sobered one up. So, here she was in a strange town with a new watcher, none of her friends, and minus her boyfriend. Willow had befriended her almost immediately, though, and she was extremely grateful for that. Cordelia Chase had tried to make her into one of her lackey’s, but she didn’t really want to go that route again. She’d been in Sunnydale now for a couple of months, and she was starting to get the hang of things. She had stopped trying to contact Pike, though because he wasn’t returning her letters. Plus, this new guy Angel was really hot and hitting on her. Of course he was a vampire, but he did have a soul and all that. What if Pike was dead? She didn’t even want to think about the possibility. She was just going to remember all of the fun things she’d done with him and try to forget that she hadn’t heard from him. She really hadn’t given him much thought since she met Giles, Willow, Xander, and Angel. She didn’t know why she was thinking about him now.

When she got home from school, there was a strange car in her driveway that she’d never seen before. Willow was walking home with her and the other girl was looking at her quizzically. The closer she got to the car, the more curious she got about who it was. Not really meaning to snoop, she glanced inside the car and saw a familiar leather jacket and a guitar case. Buffy’s heart leapt up to her throat and she quickly glanced over at Willow. She smiled big and motioned for her to follow. When she burst through the door, the person on the couch turned to face her. Pike had kept his face clean-shaven, and he looked extremely good to Buffy. She squealed and immediately ran up to him, dropping her books along the way. The force of her hug almost sent them toppling over onto the coffee table. Buffy’s mom smiled gently at Buffy and left the room, since Willow was there too. Buffy let go of Pike, who was grinning from ear to ear.

“ I’ll take that as you’ve missed me.” Buffy smiled once more, and then remembered that he hadn’t corresponded with her at all since she moved. She backed out of his embrace and smacked him on the arm, causing him to wince.

“ Woah, watch the slayer powers, Buffy. What was that for, anyway?” Buffy looked over at Willow’s very confused face and started to explain.

“ I’m sorry, Willow, I wasn’t trying to ignore you, I just haven’t seen him in forever. Pike, this is my good friend, Willow Rosenberg. Willow, this is my ex-boyfriend, Pike.” She didn’t notice the brief flicker of emotion cross over Pike’s face, because he immediately moved forward to shake Willow’s hand. Willow grinned widely at Buffy as she spoke.

“ This is the Pike you’ve been telling me about? Wow, when you described him I really didn’t picture....uh..never mind.” Pike grinned at her.

“ Well, I’ve changed a lot since Buffy first met me. I would have come sooner, but I really didn’t have the funding. I’ve been working odd jobs, and I finally traded in the van for the car outside. If you’ve been writing to me, Buffy, I didn’t get any of the letters. I haven’t moved or anything, but I sort of thought you were trying to move on from me too.” Before Buffy could respond to his comment, Joyce did it for her.

“ That’s because I never sent the letters out, Pike. I felt it was best Buffy move on from the old life, not her. She’d put the letters in the mail box before she went to school once, sometimes twice a week. I’d always go out there, and remove them before the postman could get them. Now that I’m sure Buffy will never speak to me again, here are your letters.” She handed over a huge stack of letters to Pike, and Buffy looked openmouthed at her mother. Willow just felt sort of out of place with what was happening.
