Buffy Summers was walking quietly along the pier, thinking to herself. She was on patrol, but let her mind wander. She thought about school, her friends, Giles, Mom, Angel . . . She smiled to herself. Angel was always there. No matter where she went, he was there. Protecting her, helping her, caring for her. He was even there now, watching her. She could sense it. Suddenly, she heard a thump behind her. She whirled around to face whatever was there. What she saw made her eyes go wide. She opened her mouth to scream, but a hand clenched her throat. She could feel blackness invading her eyes.

Angel was sitting atop a crate, high above the pier. He watched Buffy walking along below him. Angel crossed his eyebrows, frustrated. Everything was fine until a year ago, when she walked into his life. He began to feel more and more human every time she was near him. Everything about her was special- her hair, her eyes, her smile. He memorized her heart-beat even. At night, he would sneak into her room and watch her sleep. She seemed so peaceful, without the tension of being with a vampire. He tried to avoid her, to not care, but he did. He did care- a lot. Angel absently touched his chest. The cross-shaped burn would be there for a long time. He could remember when he got it- that kiss at the Bronze. He remembered how she had held his neck, her cross pressed into him, slicing a warning that this could never be. He settled back against the crates, and looked down to Buffy. She wasn't there. Angel rose slightly. He was about to drop down when he stopped.
Just then, he could sense, no--feel Buffy's heart racing wildly. She was in trouble! He dropped down, just in time to see Buffy's legs fly behind a barrel of oil. He growled, game-faced, and charged. He turned the corner, but no one was there. He looked up-and saw them. Buffy was being held by the neck. She was barely on the top of the crate they stood on. Spike, Drusilla, and 5 other vamps were laughing at him. Spike sunk his teeth into Buffy's neck. She screamed.
"Buffy!" yelled Angel, horrified. Spike drained Buffy, and dumped her on to the pier, some 10 feet below him. Angel ran to her side. He found no pulse. Then, Buffy's eyes shot open. Her face twisted into that of a vampire's. Angel was shocked.
"NO!!!" he screamed.

Angel awoke with a jerk. He looked around, realizing it was just a dream. But he wondered. Was it a dream? Or a prophecy? Angel peered out the window. The sun was fading away-and Buffy had patrol that night. Angel hurried out to find her. As he ran, Angel could not get the image of Buffy dead out of his mind. She had died once already-facing the Master. He swore he would never let Buffy die or come close to that point ever again. Angel gained speed as he flew to the pier. He reached it just in time to see Buffy walking alone. Angel stopped, hoping she would not see him. He silently followed her, and when she rounded a corner, he leapt to it. He peered around it, and saw Buffy's legs once again fly around a crate. He felt her heart beating like a tom-tom. Angel growled, threateningly. He flew to the edge of the pier and looked up. He saw Spike, holding Buffy by the neck.
"Angel, my best friend. Here's a little present from me to you!"
With that, Spike tied a cord around Buffy's neck, dangled her in the air for what seemed like hours, and threw her down to Angel. Angel caught her, and she struggled for breath. With one arm around her waist, Angel yanked with all his strength to break the cord, but to no avail. Buffy began to turn blue, and her eyes fluttered closed. Angel yanked it so hard, Buffy snagged one last breath. Finally, the cord broke off, but Buffy fell limp in his arms. Angel wildly searched for a pulse. He found it- weakly beating. Angel supported Buffy, and half-carried her down to the pier. Without warning, the 5 vampires ambushed them. 2 of them grabbed Buffy, while the other 3 held Angel tight.
"Oh Angel! Here's another gift- from Drusilla!" called Spike. The 2 vamps tossed Buffy off the pier and into the icy water. Angel's eyes went wide-Buffy could not swim.
A stream of adrenaline surged through him, and he broke free with such force, the vamps flew in different directions. Angel leapt off the pier and into the water. He dragged Buffy out from her watery grave, and pulled her under the pier. Her pulse was gone when he searched! Angel looked around wildly. CPR! He could do CPR! But no, he had no breath! Without thinking, Angel took a giant breath, and forced it into Buffy mouth. He pumped her chest as well. Over and over he did these steps. Then, he realized Buffy could not be brought back. Angel let the tears he had held back fall freely down his cheeks. Suddenly, Buffy sucked in a gulp of precious air. She coughed out water, and clung to whatever was holding her. Angel winced at the strength of Buffy's fingers as she sunk them into his arm. He gently laid her down on the ground, and felt her neck. She was shaking, but her pulse had strangely went back to normal.
"A-Angel?" she asked, a bit dazed.
"I'm here." he said softly. Buffy hugged him fiercely. Then she stood, fully recovered.
"Where's Spike?!" she asked, a menacing glance in her eye.
"Right here." he replied. Buffy slowly turned to him.
"Sorry to leave, mate, but Dru needs me." Spike smiled a vicious smile. He turned to go. Suddenly, and explosion rocked the pier, and beams of wood and rocks collided down onto the two. When the dust had settled, neither of them were harmed. Buffy looked at the barricade blocking them from freedom.

All night long she and Angel tried to budge the rocks, but to no avail. As the sun came up, rays of deadly light streamed through the cracks of the rocks. Angel huddled as far as he could go into the darkest corner. As the day went on, Angel got weaker and weaker from the light and lack of food. He needed some blood to regain strength. The night came, and Angel was worse. Buffy worried so much. She settled Angel's head in her lap, and stroked his midnight-black hair. Buffy saw him slipping farther and farther away. She tried to talk soothing words to him, to help at least. But no, Angel continued to get weaker and weaker. The sunlight was bad enough, but without blood to nurish him in 2 days, he would surley perish.
After trying everything they could think of, they was only one option left. With that, Buffy found a jagged piece of rock and slit her wrist. She made sure to avoid a major artery. Blood seeped through the slice, red as a ruby. She forced her wrist to Angel's mouth, and said,
"I'm so sorry, Angel." Angel reluctantly drank, but as he regained strength, he keep drinking. Buffy was alarmed.
"Angel, stop! Please stop!" She was losing blood so fast! Angel was lost in the moment, and he kept on feeding. Buffy tried to get away, but Angel forced her back into the wall, pinning her arms. Buffy screamed, but Angel nashed down harder, sucking away her life. Buffy whispered to herself,
"No . . ." just before she collapsed.
* * *
Angel shook his head. He felt stronger than he had every felt in his entire life. He crashed through the barricade of stones.
"Buffy, we're free!" he shouted. The moonlight was a welcome to him.
"Buffy, c'mon." he said. He turned to her.
"Buffy, I--" he stopped sort. Buffy was lying on the ground, unconscious. Her wrist was stained with blood, and two bite marks were next to a slit wound. Angel ran his tongue over his teeth. Horrified, he tasted a tangy ping, and knew in an instant it was Buffy's blood. Angel ran to her side, and picked her up.
"Buffy? Buffy?!" he was nearly in hysterics. She was more dead than alive-her pulse was almost gone. Angel howled. He nearly killed Buffy- the one person who meant anything to him.

Angel hurried back to his apartment. He laid Buffy down on his bed. She was convulsing and shaking. Angel went to his refrigerator, and grabbed a bag of blood in Buffy's type. He used an IV needle from a previous encounter to let the blood flow in her veins. Angel bandaged her wounds so that the blood wouldn't flow back out. When the bag empty, and Buffy had her normal pulse, Angel allowed himself to relax. Buffy slept for 2 days. When she had nightmares or shook uncontrollably, Angel held her in his arms. He slept by her at all times, watching over her. Finally, Buffy was well again. She was wary around Angel for a while, but they grew back into their friendship. Angel apologized for being the monster on her, but Buffy forgave him.
