Buffy was walking home from school. Giles had been absent and that worried Buffy. Why hadn’t he called her? It was getting late. Willow and Buffy had done some research on their own. Unfortunately they had found nothing to give them any hope of re-cursing Angel. Buffy stopped. Something was wrong. Why was the front door of her house standing open? Buffy pulled a stake out of her bag. Buffy stealthily walked into her home.
"Hello? Mom?" Buffy called. She entered the living room and stopped dead. The stake fell from her hand, forgotten, as Buffy stared in horror at what had once been her home.
Blood soaked the rug and sprayed across the TV. Blood dripped from the walls. Scrawled in blood across a window was, "It was good for me. Happy birthday."
"Mom!" Buffy cried as she saw her mother’s body sprawled across the coach. Joyce Summers’s throat had been ripped out. There was barley anything left of her face. Mrs. Summers was covered in blood. Buffy was filled with anger at what Angel had done. It had to have been Angel.
Buffy picked up her phone and dialed Giles number. An eternity passed and Giles didn’t answer. Buffy hung up and called Willow. "Pick up the damn phone," Buffy muttered as the phone rang.
"Hello?" Buffy almost collapsed in relief when Willow answered the phone. Willow sounded different
"Willow, this Buffy," Buffy began.
"Buffy!" Willow sounded so relieved. "Drewsilla and Angel . . ." Willow cut off a sob.
"Willow, Angel killed my mother. There is blood everywhere-" Buffy stopped. Drewsilla and Angel. Why would Willow be crying? Unless . . .
"Mom and Dad are dead," Willow said. "I didn’t think vampires could go in people’s houses. Buffy, where is Xander? If Drewsilla and Angel are on a killing rampage."
"Giles isn’t picking up the phone. Willow, meet me at the library," Buffy said. She tried to sound calm. Would Angel and Drew go after Xander? They had to warn him and Giles. Buffy and Willow said goodbye. Buffy hung up the phone, then she tried Xander’s phone number.
"Hello." Xander answered it.
"Xander, this is Buffy. Meet Willow and me at the library pronto it’s important," Buffy said.
"Okey dokey," Xander said and hung up the phone.
Buffy hung up the phone. She hesitated for a minute, then picked the phone up and began to dial.
Buffy heard footsteps behind her. She spun around to see Angel standing in the doorway to the living room.
"Welcome home, Buffy," the vampire smiled, showing bloody fangs. Angel walked over to where the phone was plugged into the wall and pulled the cord out.
Buffy picked up a coffee table and threw it at Angel. Angel dodged and came at Buffy, attempting to rip her throat out. Buffy blocked his attacks and threw herself through a window. The broken glass cut into Buffy’s knees. She picked herself up out of the bushes and ran toward the school. Angel jumped out the window and chased her. Buffy reached for her backpack. It was gone. She must have taken it off when she got home. She would have to get weapons from the library and talk to Giles. Buffy glanced over her shoulder; Angel was slowly gaining on her.
Buffy turned the corner onto the street the school was on. Buffy sprinted toward what would hopefully be safety. She couldn’t fight the vampires without tools. Angel was too powerful.
Buffy didn’t see the hole in the sidewalk. She tripped as her foot hit the hole. Buffy went sprawling on the pavement. The impact ground the bits of glass further into her knees. Buffy’s elbows, hand, and knees were ripped up from skidding on the rough concrete. Buffy pushed herself to her feet only to find that she had sprained her ankle. Buffy glanced back toward her pursuer. Angel was almost on top of her. Buffy heard sirens down the street. Buffy turned and began to limp as fast as she could toward the library. It wasn’t fast enough.
"Willow! Help!" Buffy called as loud as she could. Hopefully Willow would bring a stake.
Angel grabbed Buffy’s arm and spun her around to face him. "Did you get my message?" he asked in irony.
"Which one?" Buffy said as she kneed Angel in the crotch. Angel released Buffy as he doubled over in pain. Buffy grabbed Angel’s head and rammed her knee into his face. Buffy winced as the glass was ground further into her knees.
Willow came running out of the school as Angel crumpled to the ground in pain. Willow had her backpack and Buffy’s slaying bag. Buffy kicked Angel in the side and hobbled over to Willow.
"We should get you to the hospital," Willow said looking at Buffy. "What happened?" The question was unnecessary.
"I’m fine," Buffy lied. Well, it was a half truth. All she needed was some peroxide, bandages, and some tweezers to pick the glass out. Also, a Tylenol wouldn’t hurt. "Let’s get inside." The sirens had stopped moving some distance away. The police would be looking for Buffy soon.
Buffy and Willow went into the school and down the hall to the nurse’s office. It took no time at all to bust open the door. Willow found the First Aid kit and opened up. Buffy began to pick glass out of her knees and elbows. Willow helped Buffy clean the cuts with peroxide and water, then bandage them with gauze and surgical tape. Buffy took two Tylenol and then went to the library with Willow.
"Willow, has Xander reported in yet?" Buffy asked as she went to the phone.
"No, Giles isn’t answering his phone either," Willow said. Buffy picked up the phone and dialed Giles number.
The phone rang once, twice, then a dark shape crashed through the library window. Buffy spun around and saw Xander. Her one time friend smiled, showing vampire fangs. Willow screamed as Xander leapt at her. Buffy grabbed a stake and jumped over a table to intercept Xander before he reached Willow. Buffy rammed the stake into Xander’s heart and the newly made vampire turned to dust.
Willow was crying. Buffy dropped the stake and ran to her friend. Buffy and Willow embraced and shed tears for their friends. Tears for Mrs. Calendar. For Xander. For Joyce Summers. For Willow’s family. Tears for the person Angel had once been, and would never be again.
Then Buffy brushed the tears away. Her face was grim and full of pain. They could cry later. Now they had work to do. Giles had to found and then Angeles and Drewsilla must be destroyed. No one else must die.
"I’m going to Giles’s house," Buffy said as she loaded a bag with vampire slaying equipment. "Will, I want you to be with me."
"Angel and Drew are going to regret this," Willow said with Willow-like determination. The normally peaceful Willow had been stirred to anger. Willow grabbed a box of matches and some stakes.
Buffy and Willow left Sunnyvale High and walked to Giles’s house. The night was chilly and an eerie wind was blowing. The are seemed to be rotted with death. The streets were deserted. The only noise was the two girls’ breathing and the wind. Willow would glance over her shoulder every few minutes.
When at last they reached the Watcher’s house, a busted down door brought dismay to the Slayer’s and her friend’s heart. Buffy cautiously rushed into the house and up the stairs. Willow followed her. They found Drewsilla sitting on Giles’s bed. Giles lay with his head in the vampire’s lap. The Watcher was dead.
Drew looked up as Buffy entered the room.
"My pet and I were expecting you. Why are you late?" Drew asked in her child-like voice.
"Yah, well, we had to take a detour," Buffy said, tightening the grip on her stake. Willow a match ready to strike on the box.
Drewsilla stood up as Buffy and Willow began to move along the wall, away from then doorway. Neither Buffy nor Willow noticed the dark shape moving into the door way. Buffy jumped at Drew, but fell to the ground as Angel slammed his shoulder into her. Buffy and Angel grappled on the floor as Drewsilla leapt at Willow. Willow struck the match and set Drewsilla’s hair on fire. Drew screamed and swatted at her hair as Willow slipped out of her grasp. Willow set a curtain on fire, then turned to Buffy and Angel. Angel was getting the best out of Buffy. Willow grabbed Angel’s chin and pulled his head back. Buffy punched Angel in the stomach and pulled a cross out of her bag.
The room was beginning to fill with smoke as the fire grew. Drewsilla was trying to smother the fire on her hair and clothes. Willow let go of Angel and pulled out her cross. Angel looked at Drew and the room and ran for the door. Willow stepped in front of him. The fire had filled the window. Sirens could be heard from down the street.
"Buffy," Willow said warningly. It was getting hard to breathe.
Buffy nodded at Willow and they slowly backed out into the hall, holding their crosses in front of them. Buffy closed the door and hung a cross on the handle.
The fire had spread into the hall. Buffy and Willow ran from the building as the fire began to consume it. Buffy and Willow heard the screams of Angel and Drewsilla as they burned with Giles’s body.
Once outside, Buffy turned to look at her former watcher’s house. "Burn. Burn for Giles. Burn for Mrs. Calendar. . ." Buffy spoke with no emotion.
"Burn for Xander . . ." Willow’s voice joined Buffy’s as fire trucks raced up.
"For Mom and Dad . . ." Willow was crying.
"For Mom . . ." Tears pored down Buffy’s face.
"And burn for me." Buffy let the police lead Willow and her into a squad car. Buffy did not care what happened anymore. They were dead. Mrs. Calendar. Giles. Xander. Mrs. Summers. All dead.
Buffy was dead in her heart.
Angel had killed her heart.
"Passion. Without it, we are truly dead." --Angel
