Alone Time

“You’re not a vampire and you don’t look like a demon. So what the hell are you doing in the cemetery digging up a grave in the middle of the night?”

Amy jumped and spun around. “Jesus Faith,” she said. “You scared the hell out of me ”

“Okay,” Faith said slowly. “That poses another question: How did you know my name?”

Amy sighed and dropped her shovel. “I saw you at the Bronze a few times when you were with Buffy. Willow told me who you were.”

“You know Willow?”

“Very well, actually.”

“Oh,” Faith said. “So you like dated her, or whatever.”

Amy rolled her eyes. “No,” she said a little loudly. “I was her pet rat up until a few months ago.”

“Pet rat?” Faith asked. “Oh yeah. I remember now. Amy right?”

Amy nodded.

“So Willow finally turned you back, huh?”

“Yes,” Amy said. “Now, are you gonna just stand there blabbing’ away, or are you gonna help me?”

“Depends,” Faith said. “What are you doing?”

“Are you blind?” Amy asked, obviously annoyed. “I’m digging up a grave.”

“No, I mean why are you digging up the grave?”

“To bring Tara back,” Amy said.

“Willow’s girlfriend? I thought she couldn’t be brought back ‘cause she didn’t die by magic.”

Amy sighed again and took a seat on the grass. “Normally that would be true, but apparently she had some destiny to fulfill so some higher poser decided to have me bring her back.”

“”Why couldn’t this ‘higher power’ bring her back?” Faith asked.

“It’s complicated,” Amy said. “I don’t really understand it myself,” she admitted.

“Well, how do you know all this?”

“Tara told me.”

“I wonder what’s taking her so long,” Xander said suddenly.

“Who?” Anya asked.

“Faith,” Buffy said. “She was supposed to meet me here an hour ago.”

“Maybe she’s evil again,” Xander said. “Maybe she’s been evil the whole time and she was just pretending. So she could...”

“Xander ” Buffy cried, interrupting him.

“All I’m saying is that...”

“I know what you’re saying,” Buffy said. “But look at the facts. Faith has been living with me and Will over a week and she hasn’t done one thing to make me believe she hasn’t changed.”

“Then why has Dawn been staying at her friends house the whole time?” Anya asked.

“She has, hasn’t she?” Buffy smiled. “I hadn’t realized.”

“Sure,” Xander said.

“Bite me,” Buffy snapped as she stood up.

“Where are you going?” Xander asked.

“To look for Faith. She could be in trouble.”

“Or she could be drawing some local vampires a map to the Magic Box right now,” Xander mumbled.

Anya’s eyes widened. “You don’t think they’d rob us, do you?”

Buffy rolled her eyes.

“What?” Anya asked.

“You explain it to her,” Buffy said told Xander. “I’ll be back.”

“I could use a little help here,” Faith said.

Amy stood up and walked over to the edge of the freshly re-dug grave. “What do you need?” she asked, peering down at Faith.

“Did you want me to take the casket our?”

“Just leave it,” Amy told her. “But open it a crack. But not all the way. She’s been dead a few weeks...”

“So there might be an ick factor?” Faith guessed.

Amy nodded.

“Now what?” Faith asked.

“I cast the spell.”

“Can I do anything?”

Amy grabbed the large duffel bag she had hidden in a nearby bush. “You can help me set up.”

***

Buffy arrived just as Amy was finishing the spell.

“There you are!” she said when she spotted Faith. Then she spotted Amy. “What the hell is going on here?”

Faith shushed her. “Just watch,” the other slayer instructed.

So Buffy watched.

A strong wind came along and blew out the candles Amy had lit in a circle around her.

The witch stood up as Faith and Buffy walked toward her.

“Will somebody please tell me what is going on here?” Buffy said.

Faith motioned for her to watch the casket.

The three girls stood there for a few seconds watching.

Then the lid swung open and Tara sat up.

“Tara?” Amy asked. “Is that you? Are you alright? How do you feel?”

“Yes, yes, yes, and a little woozy,” Tara replied.

“What the hell is going on here?” Buffy asked.

“Faith will fill you in,” Amy said as she reached down to help Tara up.

Willow was laying on her bed when she heard a knock on her door.

“Can I come in?” Dawn asked.

“Yeah.”

Dawn opened the door and walked in.

“When did you get back?” Willow asked.

“Just now,” Dawn said. “Buffy called me a little while ago and said it was safe for me to come home.” She sat down on the bed next to Willow. “How are you feeling?”

“Numb.”

Buffy suddenly appeared in the doorway, out of breath.

“Willow,” the slayer said. “Oh my gosh. How do I put this?”

Amy stopped next to her.

“What is she doing here?” Willow asked meanly.

“I know I’m not one of your favorite people right now, but...” her and Buffy stepped aside to reveal Tara.

“Tara?!?” Willow and Dawn asked in unison.

“But how?” Dawn added.

Buffy grabbed her little sisters hand and pulled her out of the room as Tara entered it.

“We’ll explain downstairs,” she said, closing the door. “Right now I think Will and Tara need some alone time.”
