The Last Vampire
by Tannith

I don't own anyone or anything. it all belongs to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, and whoever else I'm skipping. Not that I would exactly MIND owning Angel, Oz, Xander, Spike, or even Giles for that matter, I'm an equal opportunity liker. Enjoy, I hope. Please, send critiques, I want to know what you think.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy half fell through the door to the pensionne. It had been a long night, and even longer since she was 16. The thought brought a smile to here face 'It's been a LONG time'She thought of all the changes in those 26 years, there were many. She thought fondly of all her high school friends'First Ms. Calendar married Principal Snyder, 20 years ago it was, I was in New York then, we thought Giles'd never get over that one. Then, let's see, ah yes, Giles and Willow reached an "understanding" I believe they called it, that must have been, oh, four years later, St. Petersburg. Then Xander, and, gods of my childhood, Cordelia, I was in Cairo then, must have been three years later, after she divorced Owen. I seem to be the only one unpaired, then again, I've been kind of busy, and it's not like I've been completely alone' she smiled 'or celibate. There was that professors' aide back in Lebanon, and that baker in Luxembourg. They didn't last though, the only person that's stayed with me in my wanderlust slaying career is...'

At that moment the object of her thoughts walked through the door. "I just got of the phone with Giles, according to all the reports he's received, we got the last of them tonight. Also, Willow says hi, and that little Buffy just begged for her first 'trendy' outfit. She's turning out to be a lot like her Aunt Buffy, isn't she?"

Time, of course, had not changed the dark haired vampire, physically at least. He was however, more than a little world-weary. He still wore his leather jackets though, and to look at him one would think he was only twenty-twenty five.

'Down Buffy' she thought to herself'we agreed. We need to concentrate on business. Besides, he probably got over you a decade ago, you're nowhere near the sixteen you were, nor are you as good looking.' She cocked her head at him, "Is that a bad thing?"

'Bad Angelus' he said internally as he looked at her. He feared that his demon face was sure to resurrect itself if he didn't control the feelings coming from regions other than his brain 'she's gorgeous and she doesn't even know it.'

Time had aged the Slayer much less than she thought. She had a few wrinkles, and there was grey in her hair, yes, but she looked nowhere near the forty-two she was. To Angel, she had never truly aged; she always seemed the 16 year-old model quality beauty she'd been when he met her. At times like this though, with her lying sprawled on the floor, shirt hanging in shreds, revealing more than it covered 'Stop it' he told himself firmly. 'You agreed. Besides, she's probably over you anyway'

"Where to next?" she asked, interrupting him from his impure thoughts.

He jumped. "According to Giles, nowhere. There seem to be no other vampires but me still roaming, except for some unconfirmed reports in Hong Kong. Those he thinks are more likely to be homicidal maniacs in connection with the return to China, due to the fact that they seem to have taken place during the day. You've dusted them all." He was still having trouble accepting what the Watcher had told him. Age may have kept Giles away physically, but he always kept track of everything. "Plus, he says that for some reason there have been signs of a new Slayer coming. Very odd he said, but the signs could have been misread. He practically ordered me to make sure you celebrated." He smiled

Buffy seemed incapable of moving, then all at once she couldn't keep still. She jumped cheerfully around the room, rejoicing at the top of her lungs until she came to a stop directly in front of Angel, whom she hugged and gave a quick kiss.

Except it didn't remain quick. Before either knew what was happening they had both opened their mouths and were attempting to help the other out of their clothes. Buffy's clothing was no problem, having already been shredded anyway. Angel's was a bit of a problem; eventually they had to stop kissing so he could remove it. The second they stopped the tension soared. Buffy turned brilliant scarlet. Angel looked everywhere but her.

"Angel, I..." "Buffy, we need to" they started, and stopped.

Buffy, in a show of courage greater than it took to fight vampires, said "What say you to saying to hell with our agreement?"

Angel quirked one of his lovely smiles "Agreed, now, where were we?" He quickly removed the rest of his clothing and tumbled her on to the bed "Right about here, I believe."

"Quite right" she answered, and stopped whatever reply he would have made with another kiss, one that soon led to more kisses, and to something that was much more than kisses.

Buffy rolled onto her back, wincing slightly as she annoyed one of the small wounds she'd taken in last night's fight with the vampires. 'Vampires! oh my!'

She rolled all the way over and was greeted by the sight of a very handsome, very naked, very smiling vampire. "Bon matin, ma cherie, sleep well?"

Aware of the irony of her words, she answered, "Like the dead. I was exhausted, no thanks to you. Not all of us have your vampire strength, or endurance," she smiled "not that I really minded."

"You certainly didn't seem to" He gave her a quirky smile.

She smacked him lightly, then continued to run her nails down his length. "I'm very much rested now, and a Slayer's endurance and strength should be a match for a single vampire. All in favor of testing the theory?"

"Aye," he said huskily, and the details after that are left to your (gutter crawling, hormonal, lovesick J) minds. Suffice it to say that they didn't leave the room for the next twenty-four hours, and that a Slayer has every bit as much stamina as a vampire.

The next evening, or was it morning already? Buffy wasn't sure and the alarm had gotten lost in the...activities...of the past day, things regained a semblance of order.

"Lord and Lady, I'm starved!" Buffy exclaimed. "I sound like a worn out old woman, next stop, garage sales and a husband with a beer belly."

Angel smiled "You, my dear, are in much better shape than you give yourself credit for, and as I do not have a beer belly, I would like to know who you were seeing in that place. However, as much as I would like to prove to you exactly what effect your beauty has on me, I too, am starved. I am going to take a nice, COLD, shower, and then go sneak into the blood bank, quickly before I decide to say to hell with it and pounce on you again." His eyes unfocused. "Oh, what an intriguing idea" He snapped back to himself. "Cold showers, cold showers, calculus, chess, cold showers"

"Angel" she laughed, then grew serious. "Angel, do you always have to kill your 'blood donor'? I mean, what would happen if you drank of me? I don't like the thought of you all alone out there, when what you essentially need I can give you, besides, wouldn't fresh be better, I mean wouldn't that work?" She rushed to finish.

Angel looked startled. "Buffy, the thought never crossed my mind, nor do I intend to think about it now. Do you have ANY idea what could happen? As Giles would say, there's no precedent. What if I lost control, what if…"

"Angel, I'm sorry, I only meant to help. I trust you, but if you're unsure, I understand. Just remember, I'm here if and when you need me." She hugged him.

He kissed her hair, then her ear and then her neck…and then he felt it. His vampire demon side. He heard the blood in her veins, felt the hunger of his body, he couldn't fight it, it was too strong. His face changed and his teeth grew. He sunk his teeth into her throat, tasted her blood. She screamed.

That scream and the blood's power gave him the strength to push back the demon. He returned to himself and cradled her in his arms as he sunk to the floor.

"Gods, Buffy, what have I done." He held her small body close as he rocked back and forth on the floor.

"Angel, what happened?" Buffy asked as she recovered.

"I lost control," he said, "the hunger, your blood, I couldn't control it. Gods, this can never be. As long as I live, vampires still roam the earth. You must kill me!"

"Angel, NO!"

"You must, or I'll do it myself."

"But!" she looked into his eyes and saw the truth of what was written there "All right, I'll do it, but there must be another way."

"I'm sorry, my love, but it must be done, and there is no other way." He reached for her purse and pulled out a stake. He handed it to her.

"I love you."

"And I you, my eternal princess, may we meet again in a kinder time." He kissed her. He took her hand that held the stake, kissed it, and placed it in front of his heart. He then kissed her once more, walking onto the stake as he did so.

The kiss went on forever. Buffy was aware of every minute detail of his body, and then all awareness was lost. There was no beginning, no end, no alpha, no omega, and no world without end. Just the kiss. Eternity. World becomes void. Amen. Blessed be.

Then that, too, was gone.

She watched his features go blank, watched him fall, watched him turn to dust.

Except he didn't turn to dust.

It seems that in that instant of blood given freely and death embraced willingly, and in recognizance of true love, the powers that be allowed him back his body at death, showing to all who would see, that he was worthy of the questionable blessing of humanity once more.

Buffy didn't know how long she had been cradling his body when she stopped crying. On the outside anyway, there were not enough tears in the world to cry away what she was feeling.

Slowly she walked to the phone and dialed the operator. She placed a call to England, where Giles and Willow now lived in Giles' ancestral home.

Her Watcher answered. "Hello, who is this?"

"This is Buffy. Giles, the last vampire is dead. I'm in a pensionne in Paris," she gave him the address. "By the time you get here, I will be, too. Give my love to Willow and everyone from Sunnydale. I love you all, goodbye," She hung up.

"Buffy!" Giles yelled into the dead phone. "The last vampire, but they were already all dead!" Tears poured freely down his face as he realized her full meaning. Willow came in later, and joined him in mourning as she heard the news.

Buffy looked down at Angel's body. She pulled the stake from his heart. "I'm coming Angel." She plunged the stake home in her breast. Time had no meaning they were beyond it all. She saw Angel in front of her, whole and waiting.

"I love you."

Alpha, omega, world with out end.

So mote it be.
