Cruciamentum
In the darkness, she walks around. Slow-paced and her senses fully alert. She knows that tonight’s outcome, will set the course for the rest of her life. Then a branch snaps and she hears heavy breathing. When the sound becomes stronger, she knows the creature is almost upon her. She quickly drops to the ground as it runs towards her with its arms wide open. Her right leg sweeps the ground in front of her and she hears a heavy thump. Bingo! she thinks. Not really sure what creature she is facing, she takes her stake and jabs the creature. Second rule in weapons training: it is very surprising how many things can be killed with a stake. The jab is quickly and powerful, and although she is not at full strength yet, it hit’s home and a small poof erupts. Vampire, is her first thought. A classical adversary for the cruciamentum, but also very deadly.
Then the lights go up and she sees her mentor. Great job, Allyson. Thanks mr. Harris. She sees pride in his eyes, as he congratulates her. She isn’t his first charge to pass the cruciamentum, but he makes her feel very special. You go and rest know, tomorrow will be the ceremony where you will receive your full activation. I knew you were gonna make it.
As he walks pass me to the headmasters office, I flashback to the first time I heard about the cruciamentum. Originally it was a ritual, designed to prove the worthiness of a slayer on her eighteenth birthday, but ever since the worldwide activation of potentials and the chaotic ramifications it brought with it, the cruciamentum got a whole new meaning and purpose. After the school for slayers was established and all the rogue slayers were taken care off, it showed that not all potentials were fit to be a slayer. Sometimes it would be better not to activate a potential, since some would be mentally unstable or not fit in some other way to be a slayer. So it was decided by miss Summers and our mentors, that each potential attending the school, would have a small portion of her powers activated. Enough to make it through the training and be able to stand her own in field training, but not enough to wreak havoc in society. There would be a 4 year period of training, and at her 22nd birthday, the potential would be tested, physically, mentally, morally and magically. She had to prove that she was worthy of wearing the mantle of a slayer. If she passed, she would be fully activated and have full possession of her slayer powers.
For me that day has come, tomorrow I will receive my calling and I will be a slayer.
