Summary: While Faith’s in a coma, the doctors discover she’s pregnant and they perform an emergency caesarean. The child is put up for adoption. When Faith wakes, she remembers nothing of the child. Knowing she was adopted, the child goes in search for her birth parents. (Kidfic).
Author’s Note: The summary isn’t very good, please give it the benefit of the doubt! And with the flashbacks, I can’t remember it too well so I’ll try make it sound right.
Sunnydale, 1998: Graduation Day Part 1
Faith was sat in her apartment, the one which the mayor had given her. She didn’t want to look down, she was scared for what she’d see. One minute passed, and she braved her fears. Tilting her head, she saw the pregnancy test on the coffee table, it was pink. Faith grabbed the box and read the back. It confirmed her fears, she was pregnant. About 3 months gone? Strange enough to say she hadn’t done it with anyone since that time, 3 months ago it was. She vaguely remembered her brief time with Xander. He hadn’t wanted to, but he didn’t seem to resist. Same as all the men she’d been with. But now she had a responsibility, a life inside her. She stared at her stomach and gave it a small poke. It was growing inside of her, it depended on her to survive. Faith wanted rid of it, but she couldn’t bring herself round to do anything. She had to keep it, but what would she do with it.
“I don’t care,” Faith muttered.
But she knew that wasn’t the truth, she cared deeply. She could give the child the life she wished she’d had. They could live here, and she could get a dog. A surge of anger rushed through Faith and she seized the pregnancy test and threw it across the room, it fell behind the TV, out of view. The door flung open and Faith spun around to see Buffy stride across the room. They fought for a while, but her mind was elsewhere. Was it safe to fight while carrying a child? When they broke through the glass outside, Faith thought about running away, but that would damage her pride, and the goody-goody’s would think they’d won. She couldn’t betray the mayor like that, he’d been like a father to her. Buffy pulled out a dagger, the dagger that the mayor had given her. Faith’s insides turned into butterflies.
“You wouldn’t,” she mumbled.
Faith couldn’t hear anything Buffy said, but the blonde slayer looked on edge. She backed away and then felt immense pain. She saw the dagger sticking out of her gut. Blood spurted out and she broke inside. What had happened to the child, was it alright?
“You killed me,” Faith started, before she toppled backwards off the building.
You killed my unborn child, was all she thought. She hit the truck and fell unconscious.
Sunnydale Hospital, Graduation Day Part 2
Faith was in her bed, dead to the world. The bruises covered her face and her heartbeat was weak. Mayor Richard Wilkins III was sat by her side, clutching her hand.
“Come on Faith,” he whispered to her. “We can beat this.”
She didn’t respond, she just lay there. A few medical staff were stood at the other end of the room and they were nervously looking at Faith.
“I don’t understand,” a nurse said. “Have you seen her, she shouldn’t be alive.”
“Any normal person who’s been through that wouldn’t be alive,” an intern commented.
“She’s not really a normal person is she?” the nurse replied.
“We shouldn’t be talking about that,” the Intern hushed her.
Faith’s doctor who was stood with them almost dropped some folders in shock. The other 2 turned to him and wondered what was wrong. The doctor re-read what he was reading, then gulped.
“What?” the nurse asked excitedly.
“The scans have discovered a 2nd heartbeat,” the doctor exclaimed. “She’s 3 months pregnant.”
“But isn’t that impossible?” the intern asked. “With her immense damage and internal bleeding. And that fall! Surely the foetus would have had too much trauma to survive that.”
The doctor looked as if he was about to agree, and then a look of concern came over him. He shooed them with his hands.
“You shouldn’t be gossiping,” he scolded. “Get back to work!”
The nurse and intern walked away, cursing him quietly and bickering as they walked away. The doctor prepared himself for a brief chat with the mayor. He was a manipulating man, or so he’d heard, and didn’t like to hear bad news.
“Mr Wilkins,” he ventured. “Can I have a word?”
“Of course,” the mayor replied. “But please call me Richard.”
The doctor didn’t really want to do this, so he tried to avoid saying names as much as possible.
“You know Miss LeHane well?” the doctor asked, indicating to Faith.
“Yes, she’s my employee but she’s also a close personal friend,” the mayor admitted. “She’s like a daughter to me.”
“Right. Does she have any family?”
“No, not that I know of. Her mother passed away some time ago.”
“How old is she?” the doctor inquired.
“She’s just turned 18,” the mayor frowned.
Then came the $1 million dollar question.
“Did Faith LeHane tell you she was pregnant?” the doctor asked.
“Well gosh!” the mayor exclaimed. “She’s pregnant? My little girl all grown up.”
“So you didn’t know?”
“Not until now. How’s the baby?” the mayor asked.
“In critical condition,” the doctor told him. “After all the trauma Faith went through, it’s a miracle that either of them are alive. The next 48 hours are crucial for them both.”
The doctor nodded at the mayor and backed off quietly. The mayor turned back to look at Faith. He slowly lifted his hand and stroked her bruised cheeks.
“Come on my little firecracker,” he whispered. “Ascension soon. Gonna need my Faith.”
Sunnydale Hospital, 6 months later
The doctors pushed the trolley out of theatre and into the Intensive Care Unit. Lying on the trolley was Faith LeHane, rather pale from her 6 months in a coma. She’d just come out of an operation, a Caesarean section. It had been successful and she’d given birth to a small girl, the first time this had ever happened and the child survived. The girl was weak and small, only weighed 3 pounds but she was a fighter, the same as her mother.
“Doctor McCarthy,” a nurse rushed up to the doctor.
“Miss LeHane is in ICU at the moment, still comatose but seems to be fine. The new arrival is also in ICU but should be released in a week or so,” he told the curious nurse.
“Social services are here,” she told them. “They want to put the child up for adoption.”
While the other doctors hooked Miss LeHane up to the drips, Dr McCarthy followed the nurse into his office and shut the door. A woman in a suit was sat down. She stood up to shake his hand and then they both sat down again.
“I’m Jessica Wood,” she smiled. “Pleased to meet you.
“And the same to you,” he retaliated.
“I’m here about Miss Faith LeHane and her daughter, does she have a name yet?” Jessica asked.
“Yes,” the doctor replied. “The nurses on the ward named her Gemma and she will be taking her mother’s last name, her father isn’t known.”
“Okay. Social services have given me permission to take Gemma and put her up for adoption,” Jessica told him.
“Okay,” the doctor waved his hand. “She’ll be well enough to leave in a week, if her mother hasn’t woken up.”
“You told us that there was almost a zero chance of her waking up.”
“Yes,” the doctor confirmed. “But as we can see, miracles do happen.”
