Fowler | | Website: | http://www.geocities.com/dukeofworcester | I work as a researcher/proofreader for a directory publisher. I have published essays and short stories in a few publications, notably The Journal of Higher Criticism and Liberty.
My affair with vampires began with "Dark Shadows"; then it continued with "The (Original) Night Stalker," "The Lost Boys" and, of course, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
I have transferred some of my stories to my website. The order in which these stories were written, in case anyone wonders: "Lorne in Vegas" (2002) [now at geocities.com/dukeofworcester], "Buffy 2029" (2003), "Reversal of Fortunes" (2004), and "Undead Strangers On a Train" (2005) [now at geocities.com/dukeofworcester].
"Buffy 2029" began as a short story written in 2003 but I am currently expanding it.
My own evaluations of my stories:
"Buffy 2029" is, of course, incomplete. It is an interesting experiment which was originally written in the past tense but which I am now doing in the present tense because there is so much back-story which now can be told in the simple past tense. Count this as an influence of Neal Stephenson whose most recent novels are written in the present tense for the same reason: so he can shift from present to past using simple past tense instead of stuttering things like, "He had had the same condition before."
I've taken a long time to finish this--longer than any of my other stories by far. Now I intend to finish it this summer. I have begun to revise some of the chapters, if you read the chapter "Crone and Cauldron" before, you might want to re-read it and subsequent chapters because i have made a major change in the plot.
"Lorne in Vegas," which used to be here, starts out as parody and then shifts tone to become a sort of sci-fi adventure. It has the added "reader's taste" problem of being a crossover with a non-Buffyverse TV series. I think it is very uneven with peaks that work and valleys that don't. I happen to like it, but I am biased. See for yourself at my website.
"Reversal of Fortunes" is an alternative universe story divided into three parts. My favorite is Part 1, "Shades of Gray." It was fun to write on a lot of levels; I out-did myself when I researched the Romanian language in order to rewrite the curse of re-ensoulment--originally written for a male (omulo)--so that it could be applied to a female (femeia).
Next, I just had to get Part 2, "Sub," out of my system, but it is uneven.
I suppose that there ought to be another part before the epilogue, but I think it would parallel the canonical Buffyverse too closely with its focus on conflict with the evil mayor.
True, the conflict between the Slayer and Cordelia would have given it a different flavor, but there would still not be enough difference to suit me; so I left out that part (you can see the canonical season three and get the idea, though).
I wrote an epilogue (Chapter 11) to show how I think season three should end in my alternative Buffyverse.
"Undead Strangers On a Train" is, I'm afraid, nebulous if you are unfamiliar with "Dead Like Me," and more so if you don't know the BtVS episode "Fool For Love." (Also, it wouldn't hurt to be acquainted with the character arc of Robin Wood in season seven of BtVS.)
For these reasons, I moved "Undead Strangers" to my website along with "Lorne in Vegas." |
Substitution by Lady Moiraine [Reviews - 2]
Summary: Alternate ending to 'Seeing Red.' A leaving group has been abstracted and, when you're so close to a nucleophile, how can you not bond? A very fluffy precipitate forms. We always knew B/X had chemistry.
