Chapter 13

Buffy pushed her way threw the big crowd and when she got to Spike he was standing at the bar and paying Gunn for the beer he had in his hand. “I thought you were working today,” Buffy said getting his attention. Spike turned to her; he didn’t seem happy to see her.

“Hey, pet—,” Spike was cut off by the look of her. He smiled and blinked, taking in her appearance, embedding it into his memory. “You look… amazing.”

Buffy smiled lightly, “Thanks. When do you work?”

Spike looked at her, “Yeah, this is my day… turns out I was fired.”

Buffy looked up at him, stunned, “What? How?”

“Angel,” Spike explained, “Turns out he wanted revenge… for… hell if I know.” Spike leaned against the counter and casually sipped at the bottle of whiskey that dangled from his fingertips. “So, love, can I buy you a drink?”

“I can’t believe… how’d he get you fired?”

“I don’t know some crap about a condition I have, with smoke…,” Spike rolled his eyes. “He told Willie it would be best I stopped working here.”

“Oh… This is all my fault… If we never…”

“Kissed?” Spike asked, an eyebrow rose. “I don’t regret it, and he’s not goin’ to bloody make me,” Spike said taking another swig of his beer.

Buffy couldn’t suppress her smile, “You… you don’t regret it?”

Spike looked her over, “So, how about that drink? Coke?”

Gunn came up to them, “She’s already orderedm” He handed Buffy her long island iced tea and she smiled thankfully to Gunn after taking a sip.

Spike turned to Gunn, “Look’s like I’m gonna need to find a new bar.”

“I heard they’re hiring up on Bilivard,” Gunn said. “The beach.”

Spike smiled, “That could be fun.”

Buffy rolled her eyes and placed her drink down on the counter next to where Spike was leaning. “Why don’t you just get Angel fired?”

Spike looked at her, surprised, “Got to love how you think, kitten.”

Buffy smiled, “You can say… he uses drugs or somethin’.”

“Hmm, I’m thinkin’ he had sex with Darla in Willie’s office… on his desk.\,” Spike smirked.

Gunn chuckled, “I don’t understand why Angel wants you out of the way, you guys seemed tight.”

“We were,” Spike told him, “He’s my cousin.”

Gunn nodded, “But you’re not friends.”

“He’s… I don’t know what he is.”

---

Angel walked up to his boathouse, and unlocked the door, another useless night with Darla. He walked into the room and sat down on the couch.

---

Buffy and Spike sat down at a small table for two in the back of Bronze. “What is it?” Spike asked tilting his head to the side.

“Where’s Cordy tonight?” She asked giving him a pointed look.

Spike looked at her confused, “At her parents house, I dropped her off—.”

“After, let me guess, taking her out on the town? Showing her around? Buying her some nice clothes, holding her bags, oh? And then maybe a nice little kiss to end the nice date?”

“What?” Spike asked.

“I just don’t get it, how you can tell me that you don’t regret our kiss and then have the nerve to go off and kiss some other girl!” Buffy said. She did have the ice tea; it did have alcohol in it and this was not all her talking.

“How do you know I kissed Cordelia?” Spike asked giving her a questionable look.

“Because I saw you!” Buffy explained.

“You saw me?”

“Yes, it’s not like you tried to hide it, anyone would have… seen it,” Buffy said looking down at the table.

“What’s this then?” Spike asked, “You spying on me?”

Buffy’s eyes shot up. “Spying on you? Ha! Like I would waste the time!”

“What the bloody hell does that mean?” He raised his voice, getting angry with her.

“Look at you, all full of yourself! Like you’re God’s gift!” Buffy said drunkenly, Spike didn’t notice it.

Spike chuckled out of frustration, “No, hardly, wouldn’t be nearly as interesting would it? You wouldn’t be able to get away with the tease. Feel worse ‘bout it would you?”

Buffy stood up, “You know what? I don’t know why I waste my time on guys like you!” Buffy said angrily, Spike stood up after her, “All you do is get what you want from a girl then… ugh!”

Spike nodded, “Right, and girls like you, so much better right? I’m startin’ to see why all Angel wanted from you was sex,” He said coldly and Buffy’s mouth snapped shut. She glared at him but didn’t say a word.

Spike looked at her and noticed her eyes filling up rapidly with tears, causing his stomach to twist, “Buffy… I didn’t—,” Buffy turned away from him and started to walk out of the Bronze.

“Buffy!” He chased after her but was stopped by Darla, “Not now.”

Darla grabbed his arms, “Spike! It’s Angel! I don’t know what’s wrong with him! He wouldn’t open the door!”

Spike saw the terror in her eyes and looked over her shoulder to see Buffy was already gone and out the door, “What do you mean?” He asked quickly.

“He’s never been like this… I don’t know what he’ll do!” Darla said panicked.

---

Spike ran down the dock as fast as his feet would let him, his duster swishing around his feet Darla was trying to keep up but Spike knew he made it almost impossible. He knew his cousin inside out; he knew all the stupid things he would do.

Spike turned and jumped on the boat, he got to the door and banged on it loudly, “Angel! Liam! Open up!” He yelled threw the door trying to open it, it was locked. “Angel!” He screamed. “Open the bloody door! Now!”

Spike backed away from the door and took a deep breath, he kicked the door in, and silence awaited him. Lots of silence. Spike walked further into the room and saw the empty pill bottles next to a bottle of whiskey.

Spike picked up the bottle, it was nearly empty. He put it back down and walked further into the boathouse, looking around the small kitchen, the whole place was dark. Spike walked passed the kitchen and noticed a small light on in the bedroom. He pushed the door open to see a half naked Angel unconscious on the bedroom floor.

“Bloody hell,” Spike whispered and fell to his knees next to his cousin, “Angel?” He called close to a whisper. He couldn’t figure out why he couldn’t talk any louder. What was wrong with him? What was wrong with Angel?

Spike put his hand on his bare chest, and felt for a heart beat, he felt it. He scrambled to his feet and grabbed the phone, 9-1-1, he waited. “Yeah, h-hello?”

---

Buffy walked threw the door to her house, tears streaming down her face. Dawn walked out of the kitchen, “Buffy? Oh my God!” She said noticing the tears. “What happened?”

“Nothing, Dawnie,” Buffy said quickly whipping away her tears, “I… I saw Spike at the Bronze. We had a fight. That’s all.”

“God, will you two ever just be happy and couplish?” Dawn complained.

Buffy sobbed, “I wish,” She whispered and her eyes widened as she looked at Dawn hoping she didn’t hear her. The look on Dawn’s face though told her she did, “But it wont happen, Dawn especially after tonight, he was a completely different person.”

“It can’t be that bad,” Dawn said planting her hands on her hips, “What did he say?”

“He said… nothing, you’re supposed to be in bed, Dawn.”

“Stop acting like I’m a child, Buffy, I’m not, so just tell me what he said, it was Spike, it can’t be that bad!” Dawn said.

“We started to talk about Cordelia,” Buffy explained, “And he got the idea I was spying on him! It’s not like I don’t go shopping!”

“What did he say about the kiss?”

“He didn’t.”

---

Spike sat in the waiting room at Saint Francis Hospital, waiting. He told Darla he would call her with any news, but it’s been an hour and there hasn’t been any.

Spike stood up and started to walk in a small circle, he couldn’t take this any more, he was going to explode. He hated hospitals. Hated them. More than anything he wanted to call Buffy, but he was so confused he didn’t know what to do. As he was about to search for a payphone he heard foot steps approaching. He looked up at Angel’s doctor approached him and walked up to him. “So? How’s my cousin? Is he okay?”

---

Spike walked into the hospital room and saw Angel sitting up in the bed but looking down at his hands. “You’re the biggest bleedin’ idiot in the bloody fucking world!” Spike yelled and Angel looked up at him.

“Funny, I thought you would be one of the last people to come to my funeral,” Angel said in a soft voice, “Why’d you do it?”

“Why’d I do it?” Spike chuckled, “Why did I bloody do it?! You’re my cousin.” Spike said taking a deep breath and trying to gain control. “You’re all I got left.”

“That’s not why you did it,” Angel said in a whisper. “You still have Wesley left.”

“Listen to me, you bloody wanker, I saved you because I… I have no idea why I saved you,” Spike admitted, “And Wes? Don’t really have him. He’s jus’ there.”

Angel rolled his eyes.

“I’ve been have a pretty bad day, well, it started out okay, Cordelia, nice chit,” Spike said, “See first I go to work—,” Spike glared at Angel and watched him look down at his hands again, “And figure out that I don’t have a job anymore, then I meet up with Buffy, so I’m thinkin’ this can’t get any worse.”

“Buffy… I screwed that up,” Angel groaned. He looked up at Spike, “Once again, you have one of my girls—,”

“That’s where you’re wrong,” Spike told him, “I screwed it up royally with Buffy, had a fight,”

“What did you say?” Angel asked.

“Nothing good,” Spike chuckled, “She got pissed, ran off, I tried to catch up to her but Darla stopped me said she was afraid of what you would do to yourself,” Spike explained, “So… naturally, Spike to the rescue.”

“I didn’t need rescuing,” Angel said.

“Right, almighty Angel doesn’t ever need anyone’s help,” Spike sat down on the chair next to the bed and leaned forward, “So, Peaches, you planned on waking up in the morning?”

“No,” Angel whispered.

“Why the bloody hell would you---try to do something so… stupid?!” Spike demanded.

“You can’t do that!” Angel yelped, “You can tell me what’s stupid and what’s not! You don’t know—,”

“Don’t bloody tell me that I don’t know what it’s like!” Spike said. “I—bloody hell Angel! You know what I did!” Spike looked down, “I ran away…” He looked up, “But I would never…”

“Don’t tell me you would never, I remember!”

Spike’s jaw clenched, “That was a long time ago,” Spike explained. “And yeah, I was stupid for doin’ it, but come on, Angel, you can’t just… come on you have to much to lose.”

“What do I have to lose, William?” Angel asked, “There’s nothing left for me!” Angel sighed, “I’m the bad guy now. Using innocent girls for what? Sex?”

“You ever think of maybe apologizing to her?” Spike asked.

---

“He didn’t say that!” Dawn argued, “Was there like someone behind you?”

They were both sitting on the couch, Dawn watched as Buffy dipped her spoon into her ice cream and ate it. “No, he said it to me… what is it about me? I only attract jerks?”

“Spike’s not a jerk, he was probably just… frustrated?” Dawn said with a soft smile. “You know, with losing his job and then you questioning him about Cordelia. The kiss was probably just… a… um… hello?”

---

“I don’t bleedin’ hate you,” Spike told his cousin, “I hate the way you bloody act! You drive me off the bloody rocker!”

“How do you think I feel?! It feels like I’ve been picking up your messes for an eternity!” Angel yelled back.

“So what? You bloody try suicide!?”

“Once again, you’re not one to talk.”

“I know what I bloody did, and I regret it!” Spike yelled back, “I could have… You’re supposed to learn from my bleedin’ mistakes!”
