TEASER
EXT. LAS VEGAS - THE STRIP - NIGHT
Establishing shots. You see the typical sights of Vegas. The
dancing waters at the Bellagio. The Lions at MGM. The Volcano
at the Mirage. Too many wedding chapels to count.
Then you see the dirtier side. The migrant workers handing out pamplets for whore houses. Drunk tourists getting hustled. Women selling their bodies on stage while drunks stuff money in their g-strings while the ashamed men hang in the back just watching.
They don't call it Sin City for nothing.
EXT. THE LUCKY SEVEN CASINO
The building has had better days, but the scaffolding around it
shows promise. A giant sign outside says it's closed for
remodeling. A smaller sign saying "Auditions" points to a side
entrance.
A battered Van which looks like its better days are well behind it, pulls up to the side of the casino and our old friend OZ hops out carring his guitar case. He surveys the scene, shrugs, and heads for the door.
GIRLS' VOICE(VO)
Name?
INT. LUCKY SEVEN CASINO - HALLWAY
A line of musicians, old and young, line the hallway. A young
woman with somewhat nasal voice sits at a makeshift desk in
front of Oz.
OZ
Oz.
GIRL
Really. How very "Sting" of you.
OZ
Nickname. Daniel Osborne.
GIRL
Nice to meet you. My name is Dorothy.
Oz and Dorothy share a look. Oz raises an eyebrow. Dorothy
gives him a smirk.
GIRL/DOROTHY
Make any Kansas jokes and I'll break your
legs.
OZ
No problem.
DOROTHY
Here's your number. When you're called, go
in, do your thing. You won't be there long
if you're not "it".
OZ
What's "it"?
DOROTHY
Who knows? Freakin' prima donna is what he
is.
(dismissing Oz)
Next.
Oz heads down the hallway and takes a seat next to an old black
man wearing sunglasses sucking on a saxophone reed.
OZ
Been here long?
BLACK MAN
Nope. Just sat down from my auditon. Barely
played two notes and the man offered me a
job.
OZ
Really?
BLACK MAN
Strangest audition I ever had.
A wild haired guitar player bursts out a set of doors and is
cursing a wild streak. Oz watches the guitar player walk off in
a huff.
BLACK MAN
Been like that all day. They go in for five
seconds, play barely anything at all and
then are told to leave.
OZ
How many have gotten the job?
BLACK MAN
Counting me?
OZ
Sure.
BLACK MAN
One.
VOICE(OS)
(On PA)
Number 127. Calling 127. Let's go kitten, I
don't have all night.
OZ
That's me.
BLACK MAN
Good luck.
INT. LUCKY SEVEN LOUNGE
Like the outside of the building, the inside of the lounge has
seen better days, but is also in a state of repair.
Oz walks out onto the stage with his guitar. A voice which
appears to own the burning ember of a cigar sits at the back of
the theater/lounge.
VOICE
Okay kid. Amp's sitting there waiting for
you.
OZ
Do you want to hear anything in particular
or...
VOICE
Just play kid.
Oz plugs in his guitar, plays three notes and looks
apprehensively to the back of the theater and the glowing ember.
VOICE
(beat)
Keep playing.
Oz goes into an extended bluesy riff and lets it ride for a minute
or so and finishes it off with a flourish. He's come a long way
since high school... musically and figuratively.
VOICE
E-flat, diminished ninth. That's a Man's
chord, kiddo.
OZ
Thought I'd pull out the big gun.
VOICE
You're not exactly human, are 'ya kid?
OZ
Neither are you.
The ember walks to the stage and our favorite lounge singer
Krevlorneswath of the Deathwok Clan (aka Lorne) appears behind
the cigar it belongs to.
LORNE
Let me tell 'ya kid. It aint' easy being
green.
Lorne takes a puff of smoke and blows out a smoke ring. He gives
Oz a knowing look.
LORNE
No frog jokes, or I'll break your legs.
