The setting of this tale is the city of Cleveland, in Ontario. Cleveland is actually the thirty-third most popular city in the country, according to information found using Google.
In downtown Cleveland, on a clear blue-skies day, in the early afternoon of a lazy Sunday, a dark-haired teenage girl was window-shopping with her two best friends in the whole world.
“I just don’t get why you won’t talk to him!” Sophie, her bubbly best friend since the tender age of three.
Sophie was spontaneous and lively. She was always smiling, practically buzzing with excess energy. She was a real girly girl; she’d dyed streaks of her blond hair pink, wore lashings of make up and spritzed herself with floral perfumes almost constantly. She was quite a flirt, going after gorgeous guys on a daily basis and relishing the games they played. She was confident, happy and bright; her grades where higher than most, so she was classed as smart.
Tamzin shrugged, saying nothing, as usual.
She was quiet by nature, taciturn sometimes, depending on her mood. Her eyes were lowered to the pavement and her shoulders were hunched forward. She was painfully shy and went out of her way to avoid talking to people most of the time. At one time in her life, a couple of years ago, she’d been confident to the point of arrogance. She’d loved parties; as a social butterfly she felt most comfortable surrounded by huge crowds of people she barely knew. Something, somewhere, had somehow gone wrong for her and she’d become sick of socialising, preferring the company of her best friends instead.
Adam, her original best friend, walking the other side of her, interpreted her silence. “She says he’s too hot for her to possibly be able to work up the courage to-”
The trio was casually discussing Tamzin’s all-powerful, soul-stealing, heart-melting, devastatingly incredible no-holds-barred crush. She was consumed by lust so strong it was almost love every time she came anywhere near him and it reduced her to a babbling wreck. Tamzin did everything she could to stay as far away from hunky, fabulous crush Mister Wonderful Jamie ‘the One’ Tyler.
Tamzin slapped him playfully on the arm. “Hey!” She laughed softly.
Adam was a cool guy, but he didn’t have many girls interested in him because he was very sarcastic. Very few people were fans of his sense of humour. Americans didn’t really understand sarcasm. It was strange that Adam did. Adam was strange though. He was an avid kick boxer and a professional photographer. He was calm and had some sort of aura of mystery about him.
“Sorry Tam. I was just filling in the blanks.” Adam made peace quickly, with an easy grin.
“You filled in wrong.” Sophie giggled. She turned to the window of the book shop they were passing and froze. Silently, she pressed her hands against the glass, gazing in intently. She was almost in a trance from the strength of her concentration.
Tamzin pulled up next to her, staring at her in concern. “Soph? Are you ok?”
Adam stopped next to them, distractedly looking from them to the digital camera in his hand. “That’d be a good shot if you’d turn round…”
Sophie took one shaking hand slowly away from the window and curled it into a fist. She pointed her index finger carefully, directing their gaze inside the shop at the thing of great interest. Then she stood waiting impatiently, closely watching whatever it was she was pointing at, desperately hoping that they would look very soon before she exploded from all the excitement bubbling up inside her.
“Oh dear, Lassie! What’s the matter girl? Is Timmy down the well again?” Adam joked while shoving the camera deeply back in his pocket tenderly. The camera was his most valuable, treasured, beloved, guard-it-with-your-life possession.
“Hey! That’s not very nice!” Sophie yelped, sounding like a whipped puppy. She did the whipped puppy yelp on a regular basis. Mainly, whenever she wasn’t getting what she considered enough attention or when someone said something that she felt was insulting towards her. She pointed back inside the window. “Look!”
Tamzin leant against the glass too, joining in the ogling session. Her mouth dropped open and her beautiful brown eyes went wide. “That is the most divine thing ever!” She gasped, barely noticing the breathy, softness of her voice.
Adam took a quick, assessing look, just to satisfy his curiousity and to judge whether whatever was worth all the praise they were delightedly heaping on it. He looked away again and sighed, pissed off and long-suffering in equal measure, but still wearily patient, as ever. “Girls! It’s just a guy. The way Sophie’s carrying on I thought it was something important.”
Sophie gave him a look that clearly said ‘you know not what you say’ before she focused her attentions back on the mystery man. “Ok…he’s early twenties…nice suit. Designer, by all accounts. Oh wow, he must be really loaded! What do you think his name is? Go on, guess! Please!”
Tamzin rolled her eyes in her trademark annoyed way. “Obsessed already? That was fast, even for you.”
The guy was purposefully heading for the door. He walked out of the shop and straight over to them. He smiled at Tamzin before he continued on his determined way.
Tamzin tensed up instantly. Her face screwed up in pain and she clung to Sophie in an effort to stay standing. Even with support, it wasn’t enough. She collapsed to the pavement, sobbing in agony.
Adam knelt next to her automatically. “Tam! What’s wrong?” He gazed into her eyes, frantic with worry.
The man suddenly appeared the other side of her. “Hey, we need to take a walk. Now.” He dragged her to her feet and started marching off with her in tow, whimpering softly.
Adam hit the stranger in the head so hard he was knocked out cold and dropped straight away. Adam caught Tamzin to keep her from falling like he had.
Sophie was standing there staring in horror. “Ad…is he…ok?”
“I…I don’t know.” Adam shook his head slowly, as the seriousness of the situation suddenly struck him and his legs went weak as he passed out.
