I don't own Buffy and Co. They belong to Joss Whedon and whoever else whom I don't know about. Michael Ryder and Abbey are my creation but if anyone wants to borrow them for one reason or another, I guess it's okay but give the credit where it's due =)

Michael Ryder lit a cigarette in the haze of a diner in New York City. Settling down with his tea and english muffins, he took a cursory glance at the Times and noticed a news summary on the front page. “Mysterious container found from the depths of the Pacific,” he murmured. “Hm…” He started sipping his tea and nearly sprayed out the contents when he saw the picture of the trapezoidal box. The seal on it was unmistakable.

“Good God! That box! The seal!” A maniacal gleam lit in his ice blue eyes. Winston turned to where the article was and continued reading.

“Yesterday, divers and a submarine discovered a container bearing a curious seal while they were studying the mineral content in the ocean’s many vents. The party claims that the discovery was purely accidental.

“Archaeologists insist, by judging the appearance of the box, that even though it appears to be in good condition, whatever is inside is easily older than the Dead Sea Scrolls. Carbon dating will later clear up the speculation of how old this container is. In the meantime, attempts in opening the mysterious container failed…”

Michael knew that no one could open it. They needed an artifact; a very special artifact. If he only knew where it was hidden…

Abbey woke up to the sound of her cell phone going off. Groggily, she glanced at her watch. 3:00 AM it read. She pushed her long black hair out of the way and picked up her cell. “Hello?” There was a pause.
“Good evening.”

Abbey became alert. “Evening is good. But the dark is better,” she replied. “What’s the big idea of waking me up-” she glanced at her watch again “-at this hellish time? Why couldn’t you call in another five hours?””

“Abbey. Something urgent’s come up.”

“Urgent?” she snorted. “You always have ‘good news’ to bring to me, Cyrus. Dammit, what is it this time?”

“Some idiot science party has unearthed something extremely dangerous, Abbey. The discovery made headlines in every major newspaper. There are people out there that would read about this and would know exactly what that thing is. It’s a safe bet that there are people in the Watchers’ Council who-”

“Cyrus,” Abbey interrupted irritably, rubbing her temples. “Care to tell me what this thing is?” There was another pause.

“They unearthed the box containing the Gynedon Codex, Abbey. If we don’t get to it first, it’s entirely likely that others would unleash a horror worse than the said Apocalypse.” A chill ran up Abbey’s spine but she firmly pushed her interest away from this. She’d rather not repeat what happened to her in her last assignment.

“Good, Cyrus. You have fun. I’m not going to get involved in this. I’m tired and I want to go back to sleep. Find someone else to run all over the country for you. I’m retired.”

“Abbey, you’re the best we have and-”

“Good night, Cyrus.” And she promptly turned off her cell phone.

Buffy walked down the empty halls of Sunnydale High, her heels clicking loudly as she determinedly made her way to the library. She stopped when she saw a symbol she had never seen before blocking her entrance to the library. It was a huge disc of some sort with a square on its vertex with two crescent moons sweeping out from it and it glowed menacingly. Dimly, she saw Giles and the others desperately doing… something. Were they fighting? Or were they trying to get out?
Buffy rammed herself into the symbol. It refused to break or even make a crack. After several futile attempts, Buffy was beginning to feel desperate. She HAD to get into that library! She spun around as she felt a hand touch her shoulder.

“Relax,” the woman said, smiling. “You’ll need this.” She pushed her long black hair out of the way and handed her a disk- it was a smaller replica of the thing blocking her way to the library.

“How do I use it?” Buffy asked.

“It’s really simple. Go ahead,” she smiled again.

Buffy was in the library. She saw Giles and the others again. But before she could get to them, from the corner of her eye, she saw the Master and something else leap at her and she felt her throat being torn—

Buffy woke up with a start. she thought tiredly. < I need another line of work. >
