"Have a good day honey! And look out for your sister Lindsey!" Delia Burkle-MacDonald called out to Lindsey and Fred as they headed into their new school.
Fred and Lindsey were both upper-school students, and had just moved to California from their home state of Oklahoma.
Neither really wanted to be here, but Lindseys' father had gotten a promotion, and since Fred was Delia's child and she was married to Lindsey's father, well, both had to move with their parents.
"Bye Mom! We'll see you when we get home!" Fred called as their mother moved out into the traffic.
"Come on Win, lets go see bout this 'ere new school, yer?" Lindsey said, not quite used to hiding his accent like his father.
Lindsey’s father was a lawyer. And a damn good one at that. He had met Delia Burkle in his office. Lindsey was 9 at the time. She was pressing charges against her husband for assault on her and their 9 year old daughter Winifred. It was career day at Lindsey’s school, and he had gone with his father to work on that day. He remembered it quite well.
“Mommy! I don’t wanna go in there. It smells funny.” Little Winifred Burkle cried.
“Oh honey. It’s ok. Really. Mr MacDonald is a very nice man. Not at all like Daddy is. He’s gonna help us leave daddy far behind. Ok?” Delia Burkle assured her frightened daughter.
Winifred’s lip trembled. “Ok mommy. I’ll be brave for you.” She whispered.
“That’s my brave girl.” Delia smiled.
They had walked into his father’s office hand-in-hand.
“Ah. Mrs Burkle! Nice to see you again. I hope everything’s well?” Lindsey’s father asked, always the gentleman.
“Not as well as I’d like it to be, but it’s going better.” Delia told him.
Then his father had spotted Fred. “And you must be a princess!” he said to Fred.
She shook her head. “I’m Winifred.” She said quietly, partially hiding behind her mother.
His father had smiled. “Well it’s very nice to meet you Princess Winifred.” He bowed, elicting a giggle from Fred.
Delia had then noticed Lindsey. “And who is this handsome man?” she asked.
Holland had smiled and indicated Lindsey to come over.
“Mrs Burkle. Princess Winifred. This is my son. Lindsey. Lindsey this is Mrs Burkle and her daughter Winifred. They’re clients of mine. Lindsey wants to become a lawyer like his father.” Holland said.
Lindsey looked at Fred and smiled shyly. “Hello.”
“Hi.”
The adults look at their kids and smiled.
”Lindsey, why don’t you take Princess Winifred for a walk? You can show her around the office and there are lollies and colouring in pictures in the staff room.” Holland said gently. “I need to speak to Mrs Burkle alone.”
“Ok dad.” Lindsey said, and held out his hand to Fred and smiled shyly.
Fred smiled back and placed her small hand in his and let him lead her out of the room.
It was at that moment that they had become the best of friends. And no more than 2 years later, were brother and sister.
Present Day.
“Lindsey? Lindsey! Hey, is anybody even in there?” Fred giggled at her brother’s dazed expression.
“Huh? Oh sorry Winny. Just thinking.” He told her as they walked up to the school.
“Well. Let the torment begin.” Lindsey said as they entered the school building.
