Awakening
May 20th 2003
It suddenly hits her. Lying in the darkness, restless like she has been for the last few months. Dreams, or nightmares, she can’t tell the difference between them. But something is different now. The past few months she has dreamed of monsters, creatures too terrifying to describe. Some having claws, others fully grown with hair, but most of the time humans. Only, humans with bumpy foreheads and pointy teeth. Chasing her, even hunting. Though she is a different girl in every dream, the ending is still the same. She dies, every death more vicious than the other. But something is different tonight. Tonight she feels different, strengthened. Like something is awakened in her and she has finally reached her potential and this time it’s not she who is dying, nor is she a different girl. She is herself and she stands victorious over the heap of dust that was her attacker and she finally knows the name of it: vampire.

Sitting in her chair, she feels a slight tingle in her legs. A sensation she thought she would never be able to experience. Starting slow and soft, the feeling gets stronger. This is not the first time, she thinks to herself. Ever since that night in May, when her nightmares stopped, she had started to get the feeling back in her legs. Excited she calls out for her mom.

It’s the fifth visit to the hospital and the doctors still can’t find an explanation. She is walking again. Has been for the last two months. They said she would never walk again, not after that car accident had severed her spine. The chances of her walking again were almost non-existent, and still she walks.

The coach calls out her name. First place in the school’s athletic triathlon. Not only did she beat all the girls and boys in her class, she even beat the school’s record holder, who now is an Olympic athlete. Acting surprised she holds the cup above her head and smiles. Ever since May, she hasn’t been confined to her wheelchair anymore, but that was not the only improvement. She could feel a new strength and speed in her, using muscles she never thought she had. And that day a week ago when little Timmy across the street got under a car, she rushed over to help and to her amazement was able to lift the car up without breaking a sweat. This wasn’t ordinary she thought, this was something special, a gift she could use. Not only for herself but to help others too.

The doorbell rings, she rushes to open the door. Maybe it’s the new hair straithener from tv she ordered last week. To her disappointment she finds two girls at the door, both about her age. One is a redhead with short hair and very colourful clothes. The other looks more ethnic, dark skin and dreads. Then she sees a boy walking up behind them. No not a boy, a man. A hunky man, broad shoulders, brown hair and ……. An eyepatch? Must be at the wrong door she thinks, but they ask if Dinah is home. That’s me she says. Is your mother also at home, we’ve something to discuss about. the piece of man hunk asks. Yeah, she’s in the kitchen, I’ll call her. Rushing her mom to the living room, she finds the two girls and the hunk sitting on the sofa. The redhead looks like she is a bit nervous, while the one with the dreads is sitting laid back with her feet on the table. The piece of man hunk smiles at her and introduces himself to her mother. Xander is his name, could he be more perfect?
