Like all slayers, Paige forged strength from the pain and she ripped her braces from the chain. The sudden force made both of them fall to the ground. Jason still continued to feed.

Suddenly he looked up in surprised.

“What did you do-” He said in horror before turning into dust. Her family stood around her, shooting nervous glances to each other. The all turned on their game faces and prepared for battle. Paige stood up slowly, she staggered a bit feeling weak.

Her Dad attacked first. He threw a punch at her head and made contact, Paige fell backwards. Her head began throbbing and she became dizzy. She grabbed her head trying to regain herself. Her Dad threw a punch for her head again, this time she blocked it and counterattacked with a roundhouse kick that sent him flying.

Seeing them in their vampire faces made fighting them easier.

While her Dad was still on the floor she staked him, she quickly turned away not looking at him as he turned to dust.

Lauren attacked next with a bat in her hand. “Softball was always your favorite sport.” She snarled as she swung the bat into Paige’s ribs. Paige fell to her knees in pain. Lauren swung again this time hitting her in the back. Paige fell face first onto the cold cement floor.

Lauren held the bat up above her head ready to swing again. Paige quickly grabbed her feet and pulled them out from underneath her. Paige jumped up and was ready to stake her when her Mom pulled her and threw her into the wall.

“You always have to do things that hard way.” Her Mother snarled as she launched a kick for her face. Paige ducked as her Mother foot crushed the cement wall.

Lauren made another attempt at a swing with her bat. Paige caught it and tore it from her hands. She swung and aimed for Lauren’s head. Lauren blocked it with her forearms. Lauren dove for Paige’s knees trying to knock her to the ground. Paige easily avoided Lauren’s attack by stepping to the side. Her Mother tried to punch Paige, she ducked down and hit her Mom in the ribs with the bat. Her Mom fell back and Paige hit her again in the face. Paige picked up the stake from the floor and held it right above her heart.

Suddenly the vampire face disappeared and she saw her Mother’s face again. She looked deep into her Mother’s eyes and dropped the stake. Lauren then tackled her knocking her to the ground.

Her Mom cackled as Paige struggle with Lauren on the floor, she managed to find a piece of broken wood a few feet from her. She reached to grab it, she couldn’t quite reach it. She reached as far as her arm could go. *Got it* She threw Lauren off as she turned to dust.

Her Mom stood in the middle of the room.

“Just me and you.” She said as Paige picked up the stake. As Paige rose back up she staggered a little and grabbed her head again.

“You don’t look too well, maybe you should rest.” She said again in her whisper calm tone.

“It’s not going to work anymore.” Paige said throwing the first punch that made contact with the vampire’s chin.

Her Mom fell back in surprise.

“You would punch your own Mother?”

“You are not my mom.” She yelled

Her Mom cackled again, “Worked long enough.” And she put her game face on throwing a punch.

Paige had the stake waiting and quickly staked her Mom. Her Mom’s dust fell to the floor.

She stared at the stake in her hands. She couldn’t believe what she did. She dropped to her knees still cradling the stake in her hands. Tears were swelling in her eyes. She used all the power in her body to prevent herself from crying.

A little boy walked slowly across the cement floor. Paige did not realize he was there until she felt his hand on her shoulder. She looked up and horror struck her face.

“Why are you sad again Paigey?” The little boy asked in a tired voice.

“It’s nothing important anymore.” She said wiping her eyes and forcing a smile then she rubbed his hair.

He shook his head and smiled. “I think I know why.” He reached into his pocket and took out an envelope and a small box wrapped in yellow paper. The envelope was yellow and water stained and ripped in several places and box looked in the same condition, it also looked like it had blood stains on it. The little boy continued, “You’re mad you didn’t get your birthday present yet.” He smiled and handed her the box and card.

Paige slowly opened the card. She couldn’t read the writing on the inside. She could make out the signatures, .Mom, Dad, Bobby, Lauren and Jason.

The little boy jumped in anticipation. “Come on open it!” He commanded.

Paige opened it and found a silver heart necklace. On the front she saw seven diamonds in the shape of a ‘P’and inscribed in the back she saw the words, ‘A diamond with a flaw is more precious than a pebble without imperfections.’

“Mom.” Paige said with watery eyes. Remembering the night two years ago when her Mom said that to her. She looked down fighting back her tears.

“We all bought it. Mom was the one who got the inscription done.” The little boy said smiling with pride.

“I love it, Bobby.” She said.

Bobby jumped into her arms hugging her tightly. She embraced him just as tightly burying her head in his shoulder.

Paige groaned in pain, a feeling way to familiar tonight. Bobby dug in his fangs and drank greedily. He continued to drink until her was turned to dust by Paige’s stake. Paige stared around her at the dust that used to be her family, her friends.
