Intermission
Anya tossed the ace of spades into the toilet. At least, that was the goal. It fluttered to one side and landed flat on the Summers’ bathroom floor. Most of the deck now lay there, with only a few cards floating aimlessly in the bowl. Her aim was not so great, but then considering the amount of gin in her system, it wasn't too bad either.
Tara flipped her own card, striking the seat and tottering off to land on the floor.
“This sucks,” Anya stated. “Why did Xander leave?” She flicked her card from her and Tara’s vantage point at the bathroom door towards the toilet.
“Because he hates you!” Tara snapped. She had listened to Anya’s complaining and griping for the last three days. The former vengeance demon’s eyes grew wide.
“That’s not true,” Anya replied after a moment, returning to her normal sullen calm. “You’re just saying that to be hurtful. Why do you have to be so hurtful?”
“Because I hate you!” Tara snapped again. “In fact," her words were slightly slurred from the alcohol, "everybody hates you, that’s why they all left! They just forgot to take me with them!”
Anya eyed the blond girl suspiciously. “I don’t think that’s true.” She said at last. “I think you love me,” she absently threw another card at the toilet. “Not the way Xander loves me, or the way you love Willow, not the orgasm love.”
“No,” Tara agreed, “definitely not the orgasm love.”
“But there’s some kind of love,” Anya pondered. “Something like why they all went after Dawn that way...” she thought. “It must be love,” she concluded. “There’s no other reason to chase after her. She’s small, weak, completely harmless to evil and yet a destructive kleptomaniac in our presence.” She nodded to herself, satisfied. “Yes, love is the only answer.”
“Very deep,” Tara nodded.
She was about to toss another card when Anya stopped, suddenly, catching Tara’s attention. “Do you love me that way?” She asked, almost astonished. “If I became unreasonably annoying and then decided I wanted nothing further to do with you, would you chase after me?”
Tara frowned skeptically. “Is this a multiple choice question?”
Anya studied her expression for several moments, then her eyes cracked with joy. “Oh, you do! You do love me! I knew it! Not the orgasm love! The love for the annoying runaway!” She embraced Tara in a tight hug. “I love you too, annoying runaway,” she murmured. Then she abruptly ended the hug. “You’re not planning on running away are you?” She demanded. “Because I would hate you forever if you did.”
Tara sighed and tossed another card into the toilet.
