“Oh Come on!” Spike cried angrily. “What’s the hold-up Osiris? You out taking a wizz or somethin’?” Spike was sitting in the middle of a poorly drawn pentagram with candles burning at each point. Around the pentagram were various magical items, arranged in a specific way. In front of Spike was a piece of paper with the spell scrawled on it, along with instructions on how to set up the magic items, and beside it was a picture of Buffy. Spike picked up the piece of paper and read over the instructions again, checking everything was were it should be. Spike had been at it most of the day, trying to cast a particularly powerful spell he’d learned about from a resident shaman in Sunnydale. Fuming, Spike slammed down the piece of paper. “Alright, last time. You better be bloody listenin’ Osiris.” Spike called his threat to the roof of the crypt, convinced the deity was just ignoring him. Spike took a deep breath, and started over, reciting the words on the paper for the eighteenth time today. “Osiris, the soul has crossed over, far from this world. I beseech you Osiris, return the soul to the body, so it may again draw breath, and walk in this world. Return the soul, release her!” Spike looked down at the picture of Buffy, a determined expression on his face. “Return the soul, release her, and let her awaken!” Spike read the final line of the incantation, waiting patiently for a moment. “Return the soul, release her, and let her awaken!” Spike repeated, rage welling up inside him. He waited another few moments, awaiting any sign that the spell had worked, but none came. Spike started to his feet, balling his hands into fists. “Son of a bitch!” Spike screamed, kicking one of the candles clear across the room. “Bloody shaman! Guaranteed to work my arse!” Spike picked up the piece of paper and crunched it into a ball, hurling it to one side. “Alright Osiris, listen up!” Spike yelled at the top of his voice. “You soddin’ bring her back right now or I swear to…” The sound of his crypt door opening made him stop cold. His heart would’ve skipped a beat, if it was beating. He turned towards his crypt door, hoping against hope that the spell had worked, that it would be Buffy walking through his door. But sadly it wasn’t.
Standing in the doorway was Giles brandishing an axe, and behind him stood Willow and Tara, and an exhausted looking Xander. Spike let out a disappointed sigh. When Giles looked to the pentagram drawn on the ground Spike hurried to stand in his way. “Can I help you?” Spike asked, trying to keep his uninvited guests from intruding.
“What are you doing Spike?” Giles asked, locking the vampire with a hard gaze.
“Trying to get a little peace, so if you wouldn’t mind…” Spike tried to usher them out, but as Giles brought up his axe Spike thought better of it. The group moved inside, Xander dropping the colossal bag down at the door and taking a seat on the steps. Willow and Tara moved aside, eyeing the pentagram on the stone floor of the crypt.
“I think we’ve found the source of the magical disturbance.” Tara said pointedly.
“Magical what?” Spike frowned, he turned and glanced at the pentagram, acting calm. “Oh, that’s been there for a while, haven’t you noticed?”
“What were you doing Spike?” Giles asked, clearly not in the mood for his games.
“It’s none of your business Rupert, so why don’t you and yours kindly piss off.” Spike said defensively. Tara had picked up the crumpled piece of paper, and after reading it had handed it to Willow. She read the incantation and then examined the pentagram.
“Giles.” Willow sounded. “I think this was a resurrection spell. I mean, some of the vital items are missing, and this incantation’s all wrong, but it seems like a resurrection spell to me.”
“Resurrection spell?” Spike retorted. “No. I was just trying to conjure up a lock for my crypt door, so I don’t get uninvited guests.” Spike said pointedly, as though Giles would care about intruding. Giles glared coldly at the vampire, his grip tightening on the axe.
“And take a look at this.” Tara said, presenting the picture of Buffy to Giles.
“Ok.” Spike spoke quickly. “I can explain this.” But Giles brought the butt of the axe round, striking him hard in the temple. Spike stumbled back, holding his head, but before he could do anything Giles rushed him, forcing him back into the wall and placing the axe blade under his chin.
“You were trying to bring Buffy back?” Xander asked, glaring at him.
“Don’t you understand what you could’ve done?” Willow demanded, anger written on her face.
“What are you talkin’ about?” Spike frowned, feeling Giles press the cold blade against his throat.
“Trying to bring her back was incredibly stupid.” Giles said in a low menacing tone.
“Are you insane?” Spike shot back. “If that spell would’ve worked we’d have Buffy back, I’d have her back.” Giles pressed the blade against his throat harder. “I’d be doing us all a favour!”
“Resurrection spells are extremely dangerous.” Giles warned him. “And they are unpredictable. If it had worked you could’ve brought something back that isn’t her. You could’ve endangered her soul.” Giles removed the blade from his throat and stepped back.
“But there’s a chance it would’ve worked, that I’d bring Buffy back just the way she was.” Spike said in defence. “And if there’s a chance, I have to try.” Willow and Tara had taken the magical items, along with the picture of Buffy and placed them in Giles’ bag. “Hey, give them…” Spike started but thought better of it.
“If you ever try anything like this again Spike, I will kill you.” Giles threatened.
“Come on, let’s get outta here.” Xander said, realising they’d done what they had to. There was no magical disturbance to interfere with the locator spell now. The group turned and started for the door.
“You don’t know what it’s like!” Spike called after them, tears welling up in his eyes. “She was the only one who treated me like a man, which is more than any of you ever have, you treat me like something you stepped in on the bloody street.” The group stopped briefly to turn to him. A tear streaked down his cheek as he spoke. “If there’s some way to bring her back, some chance, no matter how small. I’ll do it, for her. No matter what.”
“We’ve wasted enough time here.” Xander said uncaringly, Spike realised it was pointless trying to explain to them. He slunk back towards the shadows of his crypt, reaching for a half empty bottle. “We have to find Dawn, before anything happens to her.” Spike turned to them, calling after them as they started into the twilight.
“Wait a minute!” He hurried to the door of his crypt, seeing the sun was down now and so followed them out. “Is something up with Dawn?”
“She ran away this morning and we’ve been trying to find…” Tara started, cutting herself short, realising the group didn’t want Spike involved.
“Dawn’s gone?” Spike asked.
“It’s not your concern Spike.” Giles said, moving on.
“Too bloody right it is!” Spike retorted. “What happened? Why’d she run off?”
“We’ll handle it.” Xander walked on, ignoring the vampire.
“Do you need some help?” Spike persisted.
“No!” The group replied in unison.
“Leave it to us.” Xander said, hurrying on, leaving Spike standing amongst the headstones. He watched them go, his anger building up inside.
“Fine then.” Spike called after them, turning and stomping back to his crypt. He slammed the door hard and resumed to pick up his bottle, downing a mouthful. He sat down against the wall, feeling his rage building.
‘They don’t want my help, then bugger ‘em.’ Spike told himself, downing another mouthful. ‘They can find Dawn without me. Sod ‘em all.” Then the thought hit him. ‘No, Buffy wouldn’t want that. And what if something happens to Dawn before those gits figure out were she’s hidin’? No, I’ll find her myself.’ Spike rose from the ground, tossing the bottle aside. ‘Buffy, I’m not going to let you down again…’ Spike grabbed his leather duster coat, flinging it on and stormed out into the night. ‘Never again.’
