Chapter Nine
Visitors

Paige starred at Anna for a minute trying to figure out if this was all some sort of a joke. “I’d say let’s go upstairs.” She finally answered. Getting up her and Anna slowly trudged up the wooden staircase, not bothering to see if anyone was fallowing them.

“And you call yourself a slayer?” A recently appeared Faith said as the girls entered the room.

“Okay, it’s not just me right. She really is standing in front of us.”

Paige squinted her eyes. “Innless I suddenly need glasses, I’m going to go with yeah on this one.”

“So you’re the watcher new little play things. Must be proud of you two. In just a couple of weeks, you’ve both managed to stay alive and tame the wild beast once again.” She gestured behind them where Angel was currently standing. “That in its own has got to get you two something. A gold star maybe?”

Anna walked forward, but still stayed a good five feet away from the ghost in front of her. “What do you want?”

“What do we all want? A nice house, family and friends, but I guess that’s out of the question for me seeing as I’m dead and all.” She smirked, slowly circling the room. “You never know what you’re missing out on until you’re dead, that’s for sure.”

Paige stepped up to Anna’s side. “Something’s not right here.”

“You getting that too?”

Paige eyed the girl in front of her warily. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s different from when Buffy came. It’s… I don’t know.” She shook her head, the answer feeling as if it was on the tip of here tongue, but she couldn’t quite pull it out.

“I’ll ask this question one more time and then I’m going to get cranky. What do you want?”

“To warn you. Much in the same way Buffy did I guess. Something’s coming. Something that the two of you aren’t ready for. It’s bigger and older then anything any of you have ever faced, and when it’s here, you’re going to wish you died right along with the rest of us.” Faith stepped forward, coming almost toe to toe with Anna. “You know that little nagging feelin’ that you keep getting? The one where you’re not exactly sure why you’re a slayer? Well, you better start looking for some answers real hard kid.”

“What…” Anna was about to move forward until she felt an arm on her shoulder.

“Get out.” Angel said from behind her.

Faith just continued to laugh. “I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure.” She looked him up and down. “You’re something I think I would remember.”

“I said, get. Out.”

She smiled then looked at the people all around her. “Remember what I said. Be seeing ya.” And with a blink of an eye, she was gone.

Anna shrugged Angel’s hand off her shoulder and wrapped her arms around her as if she was suddenly cold. “Don’t believe anything she says. She’s just trying to get under your skin.” Angel said, trying to comfort her.

“Look whose talking.” She shot back at him.

Paige bit her lip slowly. “Was that really Faith?”

The room went silent as the question was voiced. Anna and Paige really had no idea what so ever, and Angel? It wasn’t’ like he had hung around her all that often.

“That wasn’t Faith.” Willow’s voice sounded from the doorway. No one was really quite sure how long she had been standing there. “Faith wasn’t like that. Not all the time at least.”

“So the question is, who was it?” Angel searched the room, looking for any sort of clues as to what was going on.

~~~
Paige sat on the sofa the next morning sipping a cup of coffee. She was in one of her little deep thought sessions. She didn’t like to think about things much. Doing that only led to complicated philosophical things about her being the Slayer that she really preferred to shy away from. But something Faith… or whatever she really was, said last night had gotten to her.
“You okay?” Angel walked into the room and looked at her curiously.
“Hmm?” Her head popped up at the sound of her voice. She had been so far gone that she hadn’t even sensed his presence.
“I asked if you were okay?”
“Oh. Umm… yeah, well no….”
“Which is it?”
“Both.”
“What?”
“Never mind.” Paige shook her head offering him a crooked smile in return. “It’s just… Anna. I’m starting to get worried about her. Even if that wasn’t Faith last night, I’m pretty sure she….” Paige trialed off not knowing what she really wanted to say. The feelings were there but the words just wouldn’t come out.
“She was pretty convincing from what I can tell. I think you’re just worried because she was acting so much like Faith.”
“But I’ve never even met Faith before, but somehow I get the feeling that… it’s almost as if that was her.”
“What are you trying to get at?”
Paige curled her legs up under her a little tighter. “She told Anna that she needs to start finding herself. To start looking for the reason on why she’s a slayer. Angel, I didn’t even know that she felt lost like that! I’m around her practically twenty four seven and I had no idea about what was going on.”
“Paige…”
“No, don’t Paige me! I should know these things. We’re supposed to be in this together. Both of us being a Slayer is a blessing. It’s something that is unheard of, and for another girl to be out there that understands exactly how I’m feeling… that’s not something you should take for granted.”
“You’re not.”
“Aren’t I? You would think that if Anna felt lost I would know all about it. But I don’t. Sure I’ve heard her kind of hint towards it but other then that, nothing.”
“What is all the racket down here? Can’t a girl get any sleep in this house?” Anna came trudging downstairs wiping the sleep out of her eyes.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.” Paige looked down in her lap, offering the only words she could think of at the moment.
“No biggie. I wasn’t sleeping all that great anyways.”
“Something on your mind?”
Anna averted her eyes to the kitchen. “No,” she tossed over her shoulder as she went to go get some breakfast.
“You see?” Paige hissed when Anna had disappeared.
Angel sighed. “It’s probably nothing. You’re reading too much into this.”
Paige was about to retaliate when she heard a crash sound from the kitchen. Within a minute she had shot up from the sofa and ran into the next room. Anna stood in a fighting position slowly looking around her, her eyes wide.
“What’s…?”
“Shh!” Anna hissed sharply, continuing to look around her while moving her hand over to grab the kitchen knife that lay discarded on the counter.
Paige was once again about to say something but the faint clicking noise stopped her. Her slayer senses were sending tingles all down her spine. Something was in the house. The walls seemed to be moving, as if they were trying to suck in air. Paige warily moved over to Anna and she too took up the closest weapon she could find, unfortunately, her’s was just a frying pan though. But it would do.
The once faint clicking sound was now getting louder and louder as the house began to moan.
“What the hell is going on here?” Paige gritted out through her teeth.
“Stay calm,” Angel ordered from the other side of the room. He was acting as if nothing was even happening. “They’re just trying to scare you.”
“Who?”
He shrugged his shoulders, not really having an answer for that. Or not wanting to answer it. Which one it was, the girls weren’t really sure.
The sound of bubbles popping started to fill the room, as distant creatures seemed to move around right under the surface of the wall. They were scurrying all around, making it seem as if the walls would pop at any moment.
“We need to do something!” Paige tried to shout over the noise. She didn’t think anyone could hear her though. That was until Anna let loose her knife, nailing one of the creatures under the walls thick paint. And just like that, everything stopped leaving only silence in its absence. The creatures that seemed to move all around under the thick and heavy paint disappeared. All but one that is.
The thing Anna had hit popped out of the wall falling down to the floor, the knife still deeply embedded in it. It was almost unrecognizable, it seemed to blend easily into its surroundings. If it wasn’t for its black beady little eyes, it would be practically impossible to even see.
“Well that’s new.” Anna said. She walked over and picked up the knife, the creature still completely attached to it. “We better take this to Giles.” And without further preamble she walked out of the house, still in her pajamas.
“We’ll be home later.” Paige said to Angel before running after Anna.
~~~

“So what is it?”

“I’m not really sure.” Giles said as he took off his glasses, cleaning the lenses thoroughly. “I’ve never quite seen something like this before. “I’ll have to do some research. It just randomly attacked you said?”

“Yeah, I was in the kitchen pouring myself a bowl of Coco Puffs and then it just jumped out of nowhere, disappearing into the wall after it gave me a heart attack.” Anna flopped down on a chair glaring at the already dead animal.

“Do you think this could have anything to do with the whole Faith incident last night?”

“It certainly seems probable.” Giles answered Paige, already pulling out volume after volume of books. “But nothing out right seems to connect the two. It could just be a big coincidence.”

“Well, I’d like to find out what it really is before we get attacked yet again. This is the second time in less then two hours Giles. I’d say that someone out there doesn’t want Paige and I around to much longer.”

Paige flopped down next to Anna. “Well that’s a comforting thought.”

“Girls, I have up most faith that the tow of you will be fine. Just try not to think about it too much.”

“Easier said then done Giles. You’re not the one being attacked at every corner.”

“She has a point.” Anna offered up, giving her sister slayer props for keeping her voice under control when she knew that she was just as freaked as she was at the moment.

“Why don’t you two go home and get some rest. I’ll call you if I find anything out.”

Anna yawned. “Fine with me.” The two of them got up and walked out into the daylight. There’s an old saying that tells you that everything is always better in the light of day. But right now, it didn’t apply. Both Slayers were uneasy at the moment. Every step of the way it felt like they were being watched. Even though they had had this feeling since day one of arriving into Sunnydale, it didn’t make things any better.

“If I ask you something, you promise not to freak?” Paige said after a few moments.

Anna gave her a strange look. “Sure.” She said slowly, not really knowing where this was going.

“It’s about last night. When Faith said….” A scream sounded in the distant. “God, can’t I ever finish my sentence?”

“Hold that thought.” Anna said as she ran down the street, trying to prepare herself for whatever it was that would be so stupid as to attack in the day.
