Chapter Ten: The Flight
"We really should be going. Where are the rest of the potentials?" Giles asked.
"Not sure. Do we all have to go to England with you?" Amanda asked.
"I think it's for the best, yes."
"Okay...I guess that's okay. It's just...what are we going to do in England?"
"Train and...I'm not sure exactly. I just know that staying here at the Hyperion isn't the best thing for us to do."
"Gotcha. Want me to go round up the rest of the girls?"
"Yes. Please."
"Okie dokie. I'll be back soon." Amanda left to go upstairs.
"You're leaving as soon as they come down?" Buffy asked.
"Yes. The flight is in about thirty minutes and we're already running just a little late."
"Oh."
"Please don't start this again, Buffy. We've had this converstaion before. I'm going."
"I know, but I wasn't..."
"It's doesn't matter. You know how I hate long goodbyes. I'd just rather..."
"Leave us some note and then dissapear?"
"This time is different."
"I'm sure it is."
"Give him a break, Buff. People make mistakes." Xander said.
"I know...it' s just...I'm going to miss you. I always think that if you do go back to England I'll be okay with it. Then every time you do acutally go I almost cry. Sometimes I even do cry."
"What time are you leaving?" Willow asked entering the lobby.
"As soon as the girls come down. I don't see what's taking them so long. It's not like they have a ton of stuff to pack." Giles sighed.
"I think Fred was going to let them pick out some clothes to take with them. That way they don't have to wear the same stuff every day. Kinda nasty if you know what I mean."
"Ah, yes. I just wish that they would hurry it up. We're already running late."
"You promise to call as soon as you get to England?" Buffy asked.
"Yes. The moment we get there I will find some telephone and call you. You'll still be at the Hyperion?" Giles questioned.
"Yeah."
"Good...that's...good."
"Well, here come the girls. I guess we should move this show on the road. Bye Giles." Xander walked over to Giles and gave him a quick hug.
"Bye Xander."
"Bye!" Willow gave Giles a really big hug.
"Willow. Bye...um....Buffy."
"Bye." Buffy also gave Giles a hug.
"You girls ready?" Giles asked.
"I think so."
"Wait. You think we'd miss the goodbye?" Fred walked in with Angel, Gunn, and Wesley.
"It was nice to um...have met you all. We really should be on our way." Giles replied.
"We understand. You have the number, right?" Angel asked.
"Yes um...Buffy gave it to me yesterday. Bye." Giles picked up his small bag took one last look at the group and then walked out the door. The potentials quickly followed behind.
"I thought it would be easier this time. It wasn't." Buffy sighed.
"Yeah, I know. Sorry to change to subject so fast, but I got on the internet today and looked at some flight hotel prices. You know, for your trip to Rome." Willow replied.
"Oh. Find anything?"
"There's a flight that leaves next week at 8:00 p.m."
"Oh. Um...what hotel are we staying at?"
"Not quite sure of that. We should probably get plane tickets first."
"I guess that's a good idea."
"Are you guys really serious about the whole Rome thing?" Dawn asked.
"I think so. It is time to move on." Buffy smiled and hugged Dawn. "Don't you agree?"
"Yeah. I've been wanting to take a nice long vacation for a while."
"I'll go get back on the Internet and see if I can learn just a little bit more about Rome." Willow responded leaving the room.
"So, you really are going to go next week?" Angel asked.
"That's the plan." Buffy replied.
"Guess the Scooby Gang really is breaking up after all." Xander said.
"Just because we're going to be far apart doesn't mean we won't still be friends."
"Oh, come on. You know those long distance relationships never work out."
"Xander..."
"I know, I know. I was just kidding. We'll make it work."
"I'll um...leave you guys alone." Fred said. "I just came to see um...Giles leave."
"Where Fred goes, I go." Gunn responded as he and Fred walked away.
"I suppose that I should go as well." Wesley added joining the others.
"Darn...did I really miss Giles leave?" Faith asked walking down the stairs. "I was really looking forward to giving the ol' man a hug."
"He left. About five minutes ago, to be exact." Buffy explained.
"Oh well. It's not like the end of the world is here or anything."
"I wouldn't say it in those exact words." Buffy's mother appeared. "Are you really going to Rome, Buffy?"
"Yes...I um...I am." Buffy replied. "What are you doing here any way?"
"This is the part that get on my nerves. The whoe 'what are you doing here?' thing. I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, didn't I teach you any manners?"
"Gosh, Joyce. You just love to ask those really tough questions. I don't know how B's holding up." Faith looked at Buffy.
"Shut up, F." Buffy replied, returning Faith's stare.
"Hey, I was just joking around. Didn't mean to make you all uspet or anything."
"Whatever...so um...mom...I mean, whoever you are, what do you want?"
"Nothing."
"You have to want something." Xander responded. "I mean, come on, people just don't show up out of the blue without some kind of reason."
"Is this a bad time to be in here?" Angel asked turning away.
"No. Stay." Buffy instucted Angel. "Just leave." She told her mother.
"Not without a little something to remember me by." Buffy's mother walked up to Buffy and lifted her up by the throat. Buffy swung her legs and faught very hard to get out of her mother's grasp. It was too tight and she had no luck. He mother tightened her grasp and then threw Buffy across the room. Buffy hit the wall and landed on the ground. "That's more like it. See you next time, sweetie." And with that she vanished.
"B, you okay?" Faith asked walking over to Buffy. There was no answer.
"Oh God...Buffy." Xander joined Faith.
"How could she just let her do that? Do you know why she let her do that?" Angel asked.
"She looks pretty bad. Had a big hit." Faith replied turning Buffy over. He neck was bruised from where her mother's fingers had been and there was a large cut on her forehead.
"Ouch...reminds me of that time at the venyard. I mean...you know Caleb took her out so fast." Xander looked down at Buffy. "Hey, Buff, can you hear me?" There was still no response.
"Feel her pulse. You have to know...feel her pulse." Angel explained.
"We're not stupid you know." Faith rolled her eyes.
"Is she going to be okay?" Dawn asked. "I knew she hit the wall pretty hard...but look at her."
"She'll be fine...pulse is a little on the slow side, but I think she's just going to be out for a little bit. Help me liftt her onto the couch." Xander picked up her feet and Faith picked up her arms. They carried her over to a nearby couch and gently placed her down.
"Buffy?" Dawn touched the cut on he forehead. "It's pretty deep. Angel, do you have a first aid kit anywhere?"
"Yeah...um...in the office. I'll go get it." Angel left and soon returned with the first aid kit in his hands. Dawn took it from him and began to clean the wound.
"What was up with that whole thing?" Faith asked. "I mean her mom, or something pretending to be her mom just shows up out of no where, talks a little bit, and then throws Buffy across the room? It doesn't add up."
"I know. I think this whole thing with Buffy's mom is starting to get a little out of hand." Xander sighed.
"What are we supposed to do though? If we did research we wouldn't even have a place to start." Dawn replied looking up from her work. She then turned back to Buffy, places some guaze on her cut, and then put a bandage on it.
"Sorry I didn't get here sooner. I heard something...oh God. What happened?" Willow asked.
"Her mom showed up and just kinda threw her across the room." Angel explained.
"Oh...is she okay?"
"I think so. The wound stopped bleading and her pulse is slightly faster." Dawn replied.
"I'm with Dawn. I mean with what she said before Willow showed up. What are we going to do? We don't even have a place to start." Xander sighed.
"I know...B's out cold and we're just sitting around here. First is was Robin and then Kennedy. Is she just going to pick up off one by one?" Faith asked.
"We don't know...we don't know." Willow frowned.
As they talked and tried to figure out what was going on, Buffy was in the middle of a dream.
"I told you this was going to end badly." Buffy's mother put her arm around Buffy. "I tried to tell you."
"I don't know..." Buffy paused.
"You haven't proved to know much of anything lately."
"It's just things are so messed up. I don't even know what's going on."
"Yeah. I knocked you out pretty hard, uh?"
"I guess so. I needed the rest though. If you call this resting."
"Are you thanking me or something?"
"For throwing me across the room?"
"Yes."
"No. I was just..."
"You were just what? You're not really yourself any more. I'm worried."
"You're worried? I can't believe you're the one who's worried about me."
"Do you mean that you're worried about me?"
"No. Why are you twisting my words around anyway?"
"I'm just telling you the truth. Isn't that what I always do?"
"No. Everyone lies sometimes. Even though they know it's not right."
"I suppose that you're right on this one." Buffy's mother changed into Spike. "Save me, Buffy!"
"Spike?" Buffy raised her eyebrows in suspision and disbelief.
"Yeah. You forget about me that quickly?"
"No...why are you here?"
"In you're dream you mean?"
"Yes. Why are you here?"
"Because you want me to."
"No I don't."
"It's you're dream, Buffy. Not mine. At least I hope it isn't mine. Kinda boring if you ask me. Just sitting here talking."
"Do you want something?"
"Do you want me to want something?"
"Gosh...can't anyone just answer one question?"
"I guess not."
"Are you...in hell?"
"Oh. Great way to get this conversation going. 'Hey. Are you in hell?' I really give you props for that."
"I mean it. What happend when I left?"
"You'll find out one day. It's not time to know yet. Now, wake up and see your friends. They are quite worried about you."
"Yeah...I guess I should wake up. How long have I been out?"
"You're asking me?"
"Fine...fine. I'll go."
"Bye." Spike faded away and Buffy opened her eyes.
