Buffy and Willow were studying in Miss Calendar's old room. The library was temporarily being used for exams, because one of the regular classrooms had a wasp nest in it. After school, they could go back to the regular Scooby central.
"Wah! This doesn't make any sense." Buffy put her pencil down in her chemistry book. Willow was startled, a little. She hadn't been paying much attention to Buffy.
"Sure it does. See..." Buffy picked up her pencil, expecting a long explanation. "Oh, no, this doesn't make any sense." Willow's tone was a little dismayed.
"See?" said Buffy triumphantly. "It's senseless."
"Yeah, but, you know that, so, you're learning something." That wasn't the point that Willow had been attempting to make, but whatever. Buffy put her pencil on one of the pages in the chemistry book as Willow started to point out a diagram. The pencil slid down the pages, landing in a crevice between two tables.
"Hold on," said Buffy, as she bent down to pick up the pencil. She barely registered the little green diskette also between the tables.
She put the pencil down, then frowned. "Wait a sec..." She bent back down, then slid up the diskette and handed it to Willow. "You dropped this."
"It isn't mine. It must be Ms. Calendar's. I've gone through a lot of stuff to plan her lessons, things like that, and it looks like one of hers." Willow slid the little diskette into the computer. A document popped up on the monitor, in some language that neither girl could understand. The computer started an automatic translation.
"Looks more like a spell than a lesson plan," said Buffy.
"Well, yeah. Miss Calendar wasn't a practicing witch, but she still did some spells. And--"
"Willow." Buffy cut her off.
"What?"
"Look. It's a restoration spell."
Willow turned back to the monitor. "Whoa." Scrolling down it, she softly repeated, "Whoa..."
The last bell of the day rang. Willow popped the disk from the computer. "We've got to show this to Giles," she said. Buffy just nodded. The two of them grabbed their other books.
When Buffy got to the library, she saw Cordy and Xander already sitting at the usual table. Giles was in his office. But seeing Xander just reminded her more that almost everyone had their own reasons for wanting Angel dead... She and Willow should really wait until he wasn't around to tell Giles.
"Giles!" Willow burst in behind her.
"Willow?"
"Look!" She handed them the diskette.
"This looks like..."
"It's Miss Calendar's! It's a spell!"
Buffy winced a little. It was too late now.
"A... Erm. What kind of a spell, Willow?"
"A restoration spell. It can restore souls."
Giles stared at the diskette in his hand. "Good lord."
Xander stood up. "So, that little thing is for restoring souls? Like, oh, say, Angel's? And Miss Calendar found it. Wow. What a guy, a gentleman and a scholar, killing her before she could spread the good news. Can I just say something? Who cares?" He walked over to Giles.
"Xander," the Watcher chided him. "Restoring Angel's soul seems to have been Jenny's last wish."
"Yeah? Well, we'll never know what her real last wish was, now, will we? 'Cause Jenny's dead. Angel's a killer, one that needs killing. And you know what? I don't know what your excuse is, but I think that you--" he pointed at Buffy-- "just want to forget all about Miss Calendar's murder so you can get your boyfriend back." Shaking his head in disgust, he stalked out of the library.
He knew why they wanted to do this--and yeah, maybe it could do some good. But he was in no mood to help the son of a bitch that had kidnapped him last night. And why Buffy and the others just couldn't see that...
"Erm, even if we could perform the spell, the ritual itself requires a great knowledge of the black arts--greater than I can claim."
"I could do it! I've been reading up on the witch stuff, in Miss Calendar's things, for fun. Educational fun," she corrected herself, catching a famliiar glint in Giles's eye. "And I think that I could do it. I just need an Orb of Thesulah, whatever that is."
"Willow, this could be very dangerous."
"Will, if there's danger, then I don't want you doing it."
"And, a big no to danger! I want no danger! But Buffy... Let me try this." Her gaze swept over to Cordelia, then back to Buffy and Giles.
"I want to help."
