Buffy looked up as her door swung open. Behind her, Dawn raised a crossbow. It was Angel and another, younger, guy. He looked about Dawn's age.
"Took you long enough." She stood up, pushing down Dawn's crossbow.
"Got a little sidetracked." He stepped in through the doorway, the boy lingering behind him.
"That's Connor?" She pointed.
"Yeah."
"Out of curiousity, Angel, why didn't you need an invite?" Angel winced. Spike had probably remembered that Buffy didn't know they'd been here, and faked it. But Andrew had invited them in, and obviously hadn't bothered revoking permission....
"Um."
"Can I come in?" Buffy shifted her attention to Connor.
"That depends. Are you a vampire?"
"Of course not." He looked disgusted by the idea.
"Then--" Buffy was interrupted by Dawn brushing past her. She held a cross up against Connor's face.
"Dawn!" She was shocked.
"If he's really not a vamp, it won't hurt him."
Connor stared at the cross, at the pretty girl in front of him, then at the cross again. Smiling a little, he grabbed the cross from her hand, holding it in his own.
"No sizzling," he told her. She nodded, still unconvinced.
"Prove it. Prove it some other way."
From behind them, she heard Buffy sigh exasperatedly. She was getting sick of Dawn's preoccupation with "vamprevention," making sure that no one was a vamp before they came into the house.
Connor stared at the girl for a moment. She was smart. He could still remember once, in some other reality, when Angel had been able to hold a cross, even though it burnt like hell... "Could you please move?" he asked her. She stepped aside.
"Here." He walked into the apartment.
"That doesn't prove anything. Angel just came in with no invitation."
"Actually, I've been here before. Andrew let me in." Dawn turned around to glare at him, before switching the glare to Connor.
"Fine. Obviously you aren't a vamp. What if you're a vengeance demon?"
Connor stared at her. "A what?"
"A vengeance demon."
"Oh, this is ridiculous. I wish Connor wasn't a vengeance demon," said Buffy.
He just stared at them blankly.
“See? Not a vengeance demon.”
He glanced at them warily once again, before stepping around them to Angel. “Are they always this weird?”
“No. Usually they’re worse.” He almost broke out of his brooding to smile a little, but choked it off before Buffy or Dawn could see.
Dawn shut the door and stalked off to her room in a huff. Spike heard the door slam and came out from—somewhere.
“Ah, the great pouf has returned! Along with the boy wonder. Well, can’t talk long, gentlefolk. I’m going to go and comfort the niblet. You’ve upset her, so now I’ve got to find her a stake. Just the right kind to shove through your heart when you go inevitably evil again.” With that, he left the room again.
“He’s in a good mood.”
“I’ve seen him in better ones. Spill it, mister. When were you and Andrew here?”
Angel winced. This wasn’t going to go well… “I was actually here with Spike.”
“Okay… Why were you and Spike here?”
“We heard about the Immortal, and thought that you could use some help.”
“What!?” Her voice started rising, along with her temper.
“Well, we’d tangled with him before, and thought that he might be hurting you.”
Her expression softened, just a bit—but he still noticed it. At that, he relaxed—just a bit.
