A/N: If anyone has any ideas for cases that Angel Investigations could take one, could you let me know, please? I already know exactly what the storyline for the next three seasons will be, but I desperately need episode adventures. So if you could help me out in that area, that would be great. ^_^
Now, on with the show...
Chapter Six: Belonging
"So we need Perspectives on Twentieth Century Literature...oh, that's right up there."
"Here, I'll get it."
"Thanks, Cee-Cee. ...You know, I don't get it."
"Don't get what?"
"How two people who look so much alike can be so different."
"What do you mean?"
"Take you and your sister, for example. You have friends. She doesn't."
"Yes, she does."
"Please. Venus Rosenberg is a delinquent who should've been thrown in juvie a long time ago, and if it wasn't for the fact that David Harris turned me down for a date, I'd be convinced that him and your sister were sleeping together. I mean, what does a hottie like him have in common with a loser like your sister?"
"Nothing. They're both total opposites."
"See what I mean?"
"Yeah..."
"So you agree with me?"
"Well..."
"Cee-Cee, I think it's sweet that you wanna be loyal to your sister, because as unfortunate as it is for you, the Brood Queen is still your twin. And really, you don't have to be intimidated by me at all. If you disagree with me, then you disagree with me. No big deal."
"That's really mature of you, Madison."
"Hey, that's me. But...I really would like to know where you stand with your sister. Because, really, if you're gonna chill with me and Beth and the rest of us, well...we have an image to maintain. We can't be associated with loners like Katherine. I mean, like I said, I get that she's your sister, and I'm totally not asking you to ditch her -if you wanna do that, it's your choice- but I just wanna make sure you're not gonna try and...integrate her into this group."
"No, no, no," Celia replied earnestly. "I completely agree with you. My sister's way too much of a loner. She's so weird."
"Okay, that's cool, then. Come on, let's finish this paper."
As Celia and Madison walked away, Katherine stood behind the bookshelf, shocked. That was when she first began to realize that she couldn't fully trust her twin.
"Ms. Summers. You know why you're here, I presume?"
"Actually, I don't," Katherine replied innocently. Maybe if she played dumb, Walman wouldn't punish her. Yeah, right. In Bizarro Land, maybe.
"Mr. Porter saw you attacking Macy Lowe with this." The principal held up a wooden stake. "Would you like to tell me why?"
Why, yes, sir, I would. See, vampires are real. Now, normally they don't come out in the day, on account of the sun. But with today being so cloudy, Macy -a vampire- could blend in with everyone else. But I recognized her for what she was, sir. And I had to stake her. Only Mr. Porter stopped me. So now she's out there, probably killing half the chess club as we speak.
"Well?"
"Um...she started it?" Katherine replied lamely. She knew she was in a lot of trouble this time.
"Ms. Summers, I don't give a damn how high your marks are. The fact still remains that you've been in detention more days than you've been in class and you've gotten into more fights than anyone on this campus. In fact, this year, you've even surpassed Ms. Rosenberg in the delinquent department." Principal Walman sighed. "I'm afraid I have no choice, Ms. Summers."
Katherine's eyes widened. "No, please, Principal Walman. You don't understand. You really don't."
"I'm sorry, but we can't condone your behaviour any longer. You're an extremely bright student. But I have no choice," he repeated.
"What are you saying?" Katherine asked, her voice trembling.
"I'm saying, Ms. Summers, that I would like you to please clean out your locker and leave the campus by the end of the day. You're expelled."
"What's wrong with her?" Celia asked, looking down at the shuddering form of her sister with interest.
"Like you care," Grey shot back.
"Actually, I do. Ms. Morgan made it clear to me that I was only supposed to stand guard, not kill her. If that...whatever-she's-under does her in, I'll get the blame."
"How selfless of you."
"Hey, it was her fault she didn't sign the papers. If she'd signed away her claim to the prophecy, she wouldn't be here."
"If she has a strong will, she won't die."
"Elaborate."
"She's under a Mental Manisfestation Spell."
"In English, padre."
"She relives her worst memories, which in turn cause her physical damage. The more painful the memories get, the more dangerous the injuries become. And the longer she's under the spell, the less chance she has of recovering from it."
"You sure know a lot about this spell," Celia commented slyly.
"I cast it," he replied shortly, not meeting her gaze.
"See, here's something I don't get. You're so smitten with my sister -like I don't see the way you look at her," Celia added off his shocked expression. "Yet...look at all you've done to her. Here's my question: Why?"
"He's under my authority, Ms. Summers. That's all you really need to know," Lilah spoke up, sauntering into the viewing room. Below them, in a room completely white, lay Katherine on a metal table, bound by her hands and feet.
"Whatever," Celia replied flippantly. "But...how d'you know you can trust him? How do you know he didn't cast a spell he couldn't just break after?"
"Because I was there when he cast it, and Mental Manifestation Spells can only be broken by the victim themselves. Besides, Mr. Eros really can't risk a double-cross like that."
"So...she's in that coma-like state until...she actually does go into a coma?"
"Either she'll rise above the dark memories, which, from all that you've told me, is highly unlikely, or she'll give into the dark memories."
"And...?"
"She'll have no memory at all. Think of it as magickally-induced amnesia."
"Wolfram and Hart really are specialists in torture, hmm?"
"Well, we try."
"I can't believe it. New York City's in ruins."
"How? How could she raise an army that big that fast?"
"Because she's determined," Katherine spoke up, coming up to the group of Slayers. "One thing you guys should know: When Celia wants something, she'll try her hardest to get it. My mom was your leader once upon a time. But now, she's gone. So you guys are gonna answer to me."
"I don't think so," one of the Slayers replied. "You may be Buffy's daughter, but you have no idea how to fight a war against the darkness."
"Why? 'Cause I'm not a Slayer? 'Cause I'm not as strong or as fast or as powerful as any of you?"
"Well," the girl replied, "yeah."
"Personally, I think that makes me more equipped to lead than any of you. You all were born with your abilities. I had to work for mine. So let's get this straight: you being a Slayer doesn't make you better than me."
"Kat, stop trying to bat for the big leagues," another Slayer interjected wearily. "We've all had enough of you trying to be one of us. Venus was the only one of us who tolerated you, but thanks to your sister, she's who knows where? You're not a Slayer, you're not Chosen. So leave the fighting to the big girls, okay?"
"Okay, this half, I want you out looking for Venus. If you have to, split into pairs. Don't go off by yourself under any circumstances. Any lead you get, follow up on it, no matter how slim. The rest of you, go after Celia Summers. Take her out."
Fine, I'll find them myself, Katherine thought miserably, hurt at being spurned by her last allies.
"Everyone is place? All right, good." Holding the book up, Wesley began to chant in an unknown language.
After Katherine had been deemed captured by Wolfram and Hart, Cordelia had had a vision, meaning that Angel had had to put off his plans to storm into Wolfram and Hart for now. Because one of the demons in Cordelia's vision had looked like The Host, Angel had gone to Caritas and brought the green-skinned demon with him. It turned out that the demon in Cordelia's vision was The Host's cousin, who had travelled into this dimension from Pylea, his home world. He had come after a Haklaar demon -the second demon in Cordelia's vision- which Angel promptly slew. Now Angel Investigation's last task was to get Lorne's cousin back to Pylea.
Bolts of white lightning erupted in the lobby of the Hyperion Hotel, and Angel was blinded by it. He felt violent winds whipping at his clothes as the portal opened and saw the gaping white hole in front of Wesley. Then, just as abruptly as it began, it stopped. Lorne's cousin had crossed through, but he wasn't the only one.
"Uh, guys? Where's Cordelia?"
